WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS

Fiction has the power to change lives.

Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.

But there are messages within the messages.

There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.

Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.

This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.

THE LOWDOWN

Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.

In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.

In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

Another great read by Cooper. Spoiler alert.

This one starts ten years after the collapse. Ryker has just killed two men who invaded his home that a cabin in the middle of nowhere. His wife Jane and his three kids, all delivered by him, survive. Ryker now knows he's going to have to abandon the cabin that has been home since the collapse.

Wife Jane was a flight nurse before the collapse and Ryker was a soldier who spent years in the sandbox fighting wars. He's one very capable killer when the need arises and Jane is and always has been his rock. His kids are loved and cared for. But now Jane decides they need to go to Franklin. Its a town survivors live in. Ryker isn't keen but he knows the cabin isn't safe anymore. If those two morons could find them, then anyone could. The next visitors might be more capable then the two men he killed.

Once in Town he heads for Pete's. Its the closest thing to a store where items can be traded or bartered for. Money isn't worth anything anymore unless you want to use it to wipe your ass with. Ammunition, guns, cats, dogs and anything else you can eat is the real earner now.

Ryker makes a bargain with Pete. Ryker will make ammunition, something he's very good at, in return for a room for he and his family. Pete is more than happy. Ammunition is always needed and the fact that Ryker is a whiz at making it is a talent worth its weight in gold.

Pete tells him that the Tennessee Zone is looking for recruits and many are signing up for food, safety and protection. Ryker isn't ready to rejoin any Army. He had enough of that when he was a soldier. A soldier with a glorious past that no one knows about.

All that changes when Jane is attacked as she's gathering herbs and other medical plants. Ryker gets the location where she was taken and heads out seeking revenge. While in the treeline and getting ready to kill these men, three of them, he's stopped by a tall man with an Ipad. A pad that identified him as a member of the Tennessee Zone army. He's a general and his man capture the three men and pull the women and kids who were obviously prisoners out of that cabin they were in. The man, who identifies himself as The General tells him to come to HQ and meet him. The General could always use a real soldier and he recognizes Ryker as just that. Ryker as of now isn't interested.

That all changes when two of he and Jane's kids come down with some illness. They need a doctor and medicine which is something he can get at the Tennessee Zone HQ. He will have to sign up to get it but its worth it to Ryker. Pete has an old truck and takes the family to where the Zone trucks will be to pick up those wanting to join and Ryker, Jane and the kids are headed for that HQ.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has Ryker with a past only his wife Jane is aware of, his three kids, the General, Gregor, boot camp, a Ryker who's already been through boot camp, a Gregor who recognizes Ryker, a Ryker who asks him to keep things on the down low, an attack at Cumberland where boot camp is held, a Ryker who saves the day, a Ryker who they call a hero, a Ryker who joins the Squads, the General with a mission for Ryker, a mission involving the disappearance of a squad in Boulder, a Ryker and his team that find the bodies, a Ryker and team who get a note telling them where to go to see the killers of the squad, a Ryker who kills a crazy man and knows where to shoot to disable the bomb he has wired with a hundred victims set to die, a Ryker who is wanted by the Fed, the Fed that Ryker thinks isn't around anymore, a meeting in a bunker that full of growing crops, cattle, chickens, horses and his Father, a Father he thought was dead, the VP who he also thought was dead, Cybots that caused the collapse in the first place, a Father with a plan he calls the Patriot Protocol that includes Ryker, a Ryker who doesn't trust his Father at all, a Ryker who needs to speak with Jane, friends, enemies and Ryker doing his best to figure it al out, save his family and stay alive.

    Five Stars. Damned good read.

The ending was unsatisfying. The premise was great, especially with the focus on A. I. lately. Just felt rushed at the end.

I have enjoyed the storytelling of C.G. Cooper since the beginning of his writing. He is adept at characterization, his plot lines are tight and well-scripted, and he will never bore you, no matter what the genre. His Corps Justice series is a fine example of military/political fiction. His Benjamin Dragon series is supposed to be aimed at the YA audience, but I find it outstanding fiction for any age reader. His newest series, The Patriot Protocol is supposed to be post-apocalyptic science fiction, but it is really much more than that. It is a close look at the resilience of man and his ability to make the best out of almost any circumstance.

I never want to spoil the surprises in any book, especially with Cooper, as he will lead you down one path after the other, always wondering what might be waiting to "ambush" you in this great story. Throughout this book, as well as all the others, you see Cooper's fine love of family and the underlying moral code of all true warriors. His Marine Corps heritage adds to his writing, I can only surmise that he must have been as gifted a leader as he is a storyteller.

My advice to you is to buy this book right away, at the intro price of $0.99, even if you leave it on your "to read" list for a day or so. I purchased this book as a show of support for a great author. I also encourage you to leave a review, so other folks can see your thoughts on the story and benefit from your insight. You can find out the plot from the synopsis, you can find out about the author from the author page, but the only way you can see how folks are affected by the book is to read their reviews. C. G. Cooper has brought tears to my eyes a number of times, with the intensity of his writing. He has also caused me to laugh out loud during a story. This is the mark of a great author, he makes you a part of the story, so you care about the characters and the events that shape their lives.

In my opinion not one of the writers best offerings. It seems to plod along not really grabbing me into the story. Don't get me wrong this is a good story and I'm sure many will enjoy it.

I have long enjoyed the "near-term, scifi, Dystopian future" genre ... and have personally read most of the well-known titles & trilogies in this category released over the last twenty years. I don't believe this particular book is going to earn 'literary awards' any time soon ... but it is a worthwhile read and very entertaining. The 'hero-protagonist' is an interesting character (personality) ... although some of his 'morality traits' may seem a bit "over-the-top" for some readers. The other main supporting characters are equally interesting, if not occasionally overly "caricaturistic" at times. I wish the author had included more background detail on what the main factors were which actually drove global societies to the sad state of affairs that brought on the conditions described in the book. Perhaps that will become more prominent in its sequel(s).

5.0 out of 5 stars Dystopian novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 30, 2017
This novel is different from the others written by the author but still has the same strong, macho character as the central figure. It tells of a future world destroyed by technology and imagines the state of the human race focused in America. The reluctant hero is the key to survival. The future technological ideas are believable and human interaction is not forgotten. The end leaves us all hanging but I am sure the fight for survival will continue in a second novel in the series.

I thought the story was well written with the hero a strong, honorable yet loving character. It took a while to find out what had happened to set the scene but it is not far fetched at all !! I was wondering if there was was going to be another follow-up to this story-I felt that it had been left with the option of another story.I hope so!!

The characters are believable. The storyline has a unique spin to it. The links between the various parts are strong and provide you with so much to consider. I don't usually read post-apocolyptic fiction, but this author is one of my favourites and I'm glad I trusted him and read this book.
