'I loved The Promise' - Libby Page, author of The 24-Hour Café
When faced with the sudden death of his brother, Dan’s mission is clear. He puts together a project to help pick up the pieces and support his grieving sister-in-law Zoe, plus her young children. This is Dan’s promise - to ensure his family’s happiness, and to try and live up to the man his brother was.
But tying up loose ends brings a shocking secret to light, and calls into question everything Dan knew about his older brother. With more than just his promise on the line, Dan is faced with an ultimatum: Should he tell the truth and risk his family’s fragile happiness, or will his brother’s secrets end up becoming his own?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2021I loved this book. I was hooked from the first moment and stayed up late in the night to see what is going to happen next.
Dan had lived in the shadows of his brother Patrick all his life until Patrick's death. Afterwards, full of guilt about the last night he had spent with his brother, he tried to make amends and fill in the Patrick-shaped hole in the family.
As is often the case it turnes out that Patrick's halo was somewhat tarnished. How can the family accept it and live with it?
I loved to see how Dan changed during this time and how he learnt to revaluate lots of things in his past, present and future.
A real feel-good story with characters you can love. I recommend it to everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2021The Promise is a tender, moving tale that immerses you into the lives of the Sheppard family as they navigate the shock, heartache, sorrow, tears, guilt, regret, and shattering secrets that come to life after the sudden death of Patrick, their perfect husband, father, brother and son.
The prose is heartfelt and immersive. The characters are flawed, devastated, and torn. And the plot is an absorbing tale about life, loss, family, secrets, relationship dynamics, introspection, redemption, moving on, taking chances, and finding happiness.
Overall, The Promise is a captivating, hopeful, slightly mysterious tale by Diamond that could have been slighter shorter but was nevertheless a lovely, somewhat solemn reminder of all the messy, emotional, complicated ups and downs associated with unimaginable loss and grief uniquely told predominately from a male perspective.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but she has written better ones!
I usually love Lucy Diamond books and have read all of them, but this one took a while to get into properly. I found a lot of the chapters repetitive and didn’t really empathise with the main characters as much as usual. It’s an ok read, but if it’s your first time trying this author- I’d start with a different book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about love and loss.
I love Lucy Diamond’s writing and think this is her best book for a while.
When Patrick Sheppard dies suddenly, his brother Dan tries to help out by creating a spreadsheet and awarding himself points for spending time with his nieces and nephews, helping out with his brother’s property developing business and spending time with his parents. When sorting out the business accounts Dan finds out a secret which will change everything.
This is a tale of grief and making amends which I have really enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this book
From the moment I started reading until the very last page I was hooked. It was such a brilliant story and made a change that the main character was a man. I love Lucy Diamond's books, but this has to be one of my favourites - a great read.
