- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2014My husband says I lack a sense of humor (and he's probably right), but I got one fast as I read this outrageously funny mystery. I wasn't hooked at the beginning, but at 12%, when the protagonist (an ex-cop turned cab-driver) meets a bizarre short man with a lisp, I laughed so hard that I almost fell out of my chair. From then on my enjoyment never stopped. This is a must-read if you like a good time. Nuff said.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2015Just what I like - lots of suspense and action, very likable "hero" (single father, former policeman, raising a toddler outside of London) and good, clever writing. Will definitely read the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2014Really brilliant, just finished The Queen of Hearts, and again found it hard to put down as I have with all PJ Shann's books. Would of read it in one sitting if it would of been possible. Really looking forward to the next book in this series. Brilliant.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014Joel September is a single parent. He's also an ex-cop who now drives a taxi to make ends meet and life's not all that complicated...until his ex, Lisa, disappears and a squat little toad with a lisp threatens his lovely young daughter, 'Vic'.
September is an honest kinda' guy without an attitude, that readers will find likeable and eventually loveable.
Bad things happen to likeable/loveable ex-cops.
The deeper this investigation drives him, the more dark bitter winds from the past reveal themselves; swirling and burning like a Socorro sometimes.
Shann delivers all this on a paper plate full of joy at a Sunday picnic... it's a funny book, I recommend it. 'The Queen of Hearts' is well written and hard to put down. Rev. Basil Kronenberger
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2015I don't usually read crime novels, but the description said "throughly laced with humor," and that did sound like me. Wrong. I know british humor is donetimes dry or hard to understand, but tgat really wasn't the case here. There was very little hunor, except in a coupke of places where it was more Sick than Funny--kinda like a car crash you can turn away from.
Having said that, the story was good and Crime Story lovers will probably like it

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellously entertaining!
I'm usually more of a romantic comedy girl but I was looking for my next read and this was recommended. I have to say, I was not disappointed! The lead character, an ex-policeman-turned-taxi-driver, ends up in trouble when his ex-wife gets involved with the wrong crowd and they come after him in an effort to get to her. Mayhem and madness ensues!
The characters are absolutely brilliant. Joel, the hero is so lovably real and there are some brilliantly touching scenes with his young daughter. There's an interfering mother-in-law, a handful of villains who you will love to hate (wait for the hate to love bit at the end!) but my favourite character of all was the nosy neighbour who goes ninja on some strange characters who are watching Joel's house. I want a nosy neighbour like that!
The story was well-paced with a nice little twist at the end that I didn't see coming. The style of writing is witty and entertaining and I can't recommend this highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect idea for a tv series
This is a wonderful book. I shall start with that. Having read two of the author's more darker thrillers, this lighter approach is very effective. The writing is as good as ever and the formula of a single father 'detective' (I cant say more than this) and his two year old daughter is, I think, a winning one. I kept imagining the story as I read it being serialised on television. I would have liked to have seen more hilarious father/daughter dialogue given that in my experience two year old girls are a force to be reckoned with in the conversation stakes, but this is a small criticism. The humour is gentle for the most part and not intrusive to the story and some of the secondary characters are fascinating and I do hope a rich source of storyline for the future. This is a lovely page turner of a novel and I would love to see more.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed this book. My first downloaded title. The characters are sharp all the way through from the 'hero' down to the 'popping in then out'. The story whipped along and was engaging. Afew good twists and turns and some great use of imagery (I may well have driven up the kerb:-)). Great to see more are planned. I look forward to them.

I couldn't put this book down as the plot was fast paced and I was thoroughly engaged with each of the characters. It kept me guessing until the end. I
This is a must read can't wait to read other works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing
Another gripping read from Mr Shann with the most charming characters in Joel September and His daughter. The plot had a good few twists in it that made putting it down difficult. I'm looking forward to reading more of the exploits so hope there are plenty to come.
