The Rising: Badlands Book 3–A MM Psychic Detective Romance Adventure Kindle Edition
Vic and Simon have their hands full helping the Grand Strand brace for rough surf, driving rain, and high winds as a winter storm roars toward shore. Everyone’s on edge, and rumors are rampant about sightings of Blackcoat Benny, a ghostly omen of danger, and worse, the Gallows Nine, the spirits of nine infamous criminals hanged back in the 1700s, a harbinger of disaster.
Rough tides wash the wreck of an old pirate ship into shallow waters, high winds threaten to damage an old mansion with a dark past, and the citizens of the beach town hunker down to ride out the storm.
As the skies grow dark and the sea turns wild, several men from prominent local families end up dead under suspicious circumstances. Simon’s premonition confirms Vic’s gut feeling—the killing is just getting started. As Simon tries to reach out to the spirits of the murdered men to help the investigation, he’s attacked by malicious ghosts that don’t want anyone getting in the way of their long-overdue vengeance.
With the storm hammering the coast, and new victims piling up, Simon is certain that the sins and secrets of the past are coming due. Can he and Vic find the killer without becoming ghosts themselves?
The Rising is a fast-paced thrill ride MM paranormal romance packed with supernatural suspense, hurt/comfort, found family, pirate ghosts, haunted mansions, a developing established relationship, magic, spooky chills and sexy thrills!
Book Three in the Badlands series. The Rising is intended for readers 18 years of age and older.

About the author

Morgan Brice is the romance pen name of bestselling author Gail Z. Martin. Morgan writes urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, with plenty of action, adventure and supernatural thrills to go with the happily ever after. Gail writes epic and urban fantasy, with less romance, more explosions.
All of the modern-day Morgan Brice and Gail Z. Martin series crossover, so characters from one series appear in cameos and on page in important secondary roles in books from other series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but the more you read the more the expanded universe of friendships and connections becomes clear.
Morgan and Gail believe that paranormal elements make any story even better, and her worlds are full of ghosts, psychics, shifters, creatures, vampires, monster hunters, and magic.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2019I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
Between a winter storm bearing down on Myrtle Beach, a string of suicides that might be murders, visions of pirates and privateers, and a poltergeist troubling the construction crew at a local historical manor, psychic medium Simon and his homicide detective boyfriend Vic have a lot on their plates this time around. The action was well paced and as always I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with Simon, Vic, and friends.
With The Rising, Morgan Brice delivered another page turner that kept me engaged and reading until the wee hours of the morning. I enjoyed this story just as much as the previous Badlands installations. The plot had many facets that Brice tied together in an entertaining and interesting way, and the relationship between Simon and Vic continues to be believable and compelling (not to mention steamy).
Keep up the great work, Morgan Brice! Can't wait for the next one!

Badlands series #2. Paranormal M-M romantic mystery. Can be read as a stand-alone.
There have been a number of suicides in the beach community off Myrtle Beach. Investigating because the latest family insists the victim would not have killed himself, Homicide detective Vic D’Amato feels uneasy at the crime scene. Having been told to pay attention to those instincts, he asks boyfriend and psychic Simon Kincaide for help. At the crime scene, Simon is attacked by a vicious ghost which sends the investigation down a historical path of vengeance.
Creepy and violent ghosts have Simon and Vic rushing to prevent the next victim while they also cement their newish relationship. Salt plays an important protective break of the paranormal. Multiple steamy scenes help temper the scary ghosts.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019There are men killing themselves but are they? Vic has been assigned a case in which the family believe the victim was murdered instead of being a suicide victim. Simon is working on a haunted mansion which is being renovated endangering the lives of the workers. As these cases collide, Vic and Simon are trying to adjust to living together and the fears they have for each other’s dangers in their profession.
Fantastic mystery and the characters are very real in their emotions and fear! Morgan Brice has hit another one out of the ball park, building on the first book, Badlands! You’ll love Vic and Simon and the colorful characters which support them!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019Simon is a real life ghost hunter. He has a lot going on. An old shipwreck that possibly was a pirate ship and an old mansion with lots of ghosts. Some of the ghosts are malevolent. Vic is dealing with several suicides that really aren’t. As the bodies start to pile up, both men are drawn into the mysteries, deeper than they want to be. Each worried about the other.
While I thought this was a good book, I didn’t really connect to the main characters this time. Their sleuthing was interesting and the baddies were good ones. The supporting cast was as always excellent. The setting of the book really makes me want to visit Myrtle Beach.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019Ghost pirates! Boo hags! Unexplainable suicides that might actually be murders! The Badlands series continues to captivate, with well-written plots and engaging characters. Morgan Brice has a gift for getting it right where gay relationships are concerned. Not just the sex scenes, which continue to be hot as hell, but also the love between the two main characters, which especially shines through when one of them is in the hospital after a serious injury. The cameo appearances from characters in other series by Morgan Brice (aka Gail Z. Martin) add to the sense of community and belongingness that underlies all of her urban fantasy novels. Recommended for all who love ghostly mystery, action, and romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2019Received ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review
Decent read. I enjoy the world this is set in, I love the ghosts and how present that aspect always is. The characters are still likable. They're a solid couple finding their way after moving in together and working together. The mystery is okay, however I couldn't understand why they couldn't connect the cases sooner when they had the key information since literally the first chapter (IIRC). It was sooo frustrating. It really put a damper on my enjoyment, hence the rating. Yes, it was that irksome. But other than that I have no complaints about the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022These books are amazing they just keep you on the edge the entire ride! Cannot wait to see what Simon, Vic and rest of the Myrtle Beach crew are up to in the next book

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read
I enjoy all of Morgan Brice's books. I started with Badlands and that lead me to the equally good Witchbane series. Read the books in order and you will find out what happens on Valentine's day after this book ends.
