The Road To Deliverance: An Evan Buckley Crime Thriller (Evan Buckley Thrillers Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 773 ratings

Two roads. One reckless decision. No turning back.
PI Evan Buckley’s wife Sarah went to work one day and didn’t come home. The Road To Deliverance is her story. A hard lesson in the deadly consequences of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, of how a reckless decision made in the space of one vengeful second can set you on a road from which there will be no return, your old life lost forever.

As Evan digs deeper into the unsolved murder of the last known person to see Sarah alive, his every move is dogged by grim-faced men from a clandestine government agency intent on keeping its secrets intact. Re-tracing the footsteps of Sarah’s last torturous journey, he unearths a cruel tragedy from her past that drove her desperate attempts to make amends for the guilt she can never leave behind.

As his six-year search draws to its chilling close, Evan, like Sarah before him, discovers a bitter truth – there are some roads you walk alone.

I absolutely loved this one. I laughed, cried and held my breath on more than one occasion. Lost sleep as I couldn't put it down, and you left me wanting more.

That's saying something, since I'm reading an average of three books every two days, sometimes more.

I won't say anything about the plot, even the slightest hint will probably spoil the read. This story stands out from the rest of the series not just in that it is the best of the bunch, but that the author has created a completely new voice for the primary character. It is difficult to create a unique voice for each character, very difficult to create one for a new narrator after the rest of the books have been narrated by someone else, and nearly impossible for a man to create a genuine-sounding and consistent voice for a woman. It is as though someone else wrote this particular chapter in the saga, but I believe it's the same author. He has created a masterpiece.

We've seen pieces of this story from the first book onward, but the central mystery remained: Why did she leave? We're left with some understanding of that by the end of Road to Deliverance, but I'm not convinced the entire answer has yet been provided. We're left with other mysteries at the end of this book. Is she still alive? I have a likely answer, but nothing concrete. Can Evan be satisfied with the answers he has? It appears not.

Rural central Texas is fairly accurately described, and the characters who live there are relatively credible. Far more credible than the "big bad government" characters who perform a Kaubki Theater presentation of vast conspiracies. The vast conspiracies simply don't exist. I spent decades in the upper reaches of government, and know that a vast conspiracy cannot be maintained. If three people know the secret, it's probably lost. If four people know it, it is definitely lost. The cover-up described needs dozens of people, many times the critical mass needed to ensure exposure.

That's all right. This is a work of fiction, and a very fine one. I recommend that anyone who enjoys good writing and complex plots, as well as fascinating characters, read this. It's a gem.

After experiencing some disappointment with the previous book in this series, reading this installment felt like redemption. The storyline managed to both provide the origin story of a major source of angst for the main character, Evan Buckley, while giving us a glimpse of what might lie ahead given his newfound knowledge. It was a wonderful read and I've already begun reading the next book in the series.

Real life interrupted my reading of this book a few times, but the strong pull was always there . . . to find out what happened to Evan, his wife Sarah and his new romantic interest Detective Guillory. The exploits and surprises are many on the road to Evan's revelations, if not deliverence. I'm absolutely looking forward to riding along on Evan's next adventure with the next book in the series.

I want to apologize for not reviewing all of James Harper's books I've read up to now...the Evan Buckley series. They are like popcorn, devouring one after another with no thought except "What's next?" Mr. Harper is my new favorite author! !! Page turning, heart pounding, tear jerking writing like no other. Can't wait for the next. Thank you, Mr. Harper! I plan to be here for the next!!

The book was interesting but really has moved into fantasy thriller mode. To tie all together I mean the military has terms and this has become a jolly good one and thrives totally on people making wrong decision and never following gut. People make the right decisions sometimes ...it is roll of dice. Is a good read.

A great read that somehow answers as many old questions as it generates as many new ones. I was a bit thrown off by the early circumstances of how what happened to Buckley's wife occurred but the end was wonderfully unpredictable. Reading the next book...NOW!

Well it appears that Evan has found out the awful truth. Sarah is gone, she’s buried on the land near the hospital. It’s time to move on.I can’t wait for the next Evan Buckley thrillers

After reading 5 or 6 books of the series, it's like watching a TV series. And is getting boring, I prefer different stories using the same characters but not the same villians.

Best read in the series, Really enjoyed this one , Not that the first six were not good (of which they were of course otherwise i wouldn’t have kept reading) i believe you could read any of the series as a stand alone as he does retract throughout the book but believe me read them all and start with bad to the bone.
    Throughly recommend

As usual from begining to end you are drawn into the story. The way James Harper weaves in the stories is amazing. He is funny and yet can make you cry. He has you on edthere is alwayge and you try to pre-empt him but you can't, there is always a twist to his stories. Can't wait to finish book 8. which is just as compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another gripping story with a superb lead character
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2019
The latest instalment in the Evan Buckley series maintains the excellent standard of the previous six books and brings the underlying story arc to a (sort of) close. Evan is a credible, flawed character with Harper adding further nuances each outing. This book, like all the others, is tightly plotted and gripping from the first page. If you haven’t yet discovered Harper and the Evan Buckley series I implore you to do so!
