- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMore of a political morality tale set in the future than science fiction, it continues the saga of the Phlegars and humans in fine fashion. It was a fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA tenuous peace exists in the galaxy as The Sensitist opens. The war between the Phelgar race and the Renaissance coalition that began in the previous book, The Shadow Ship, sputtered into stalemate after Tihn Forlihn, the Phelgar leader, employed a devastating, planet-destroying weapon. But Tihn then went missing and now both sides are desperately looking for him as only he knows how to use the weapon.
Although this is the main storyline, the author approaches it indirectly, beginning instead on a planet riven by a most unique civil war. On Estia the battle is between the old and the young, with those who survive to their 70th birthday forced to change sides. Captain Bretch spent five decades fighting for the Progressives (the young), undergoing weekly longevity treatments, but to no avail as he finds himself pushed to the Reformist (the old) side.
Alternating with Bretch’s story for much of the book is that of Amilla Haretra, a human writer of sensory books, the titular Sensitist, and Uncertainty, her mechanical companion. Amilla has been asked to write the biography of Prime Validor Kodava of the Renaissance Supreme Council. Here she explains her occupation to him:
‘I’ve never read a sensory book,’ said Kodava. ‘How does it work? I’ve heard rumours it involves telepathy.’ ...
… ‘There’s no black magic,’ she assured him. ‘We just exploit the relationships between what people say, what they mean, what they feel and how they act. Then we capture the associated emotions and recreate them in our books in a form people can experience. Stories are so much more dramatic when the reader can feel the same emotions as the characters. It gives the stories an added dimension.’
— Cleary, John-Paul. The Sensitist (Convergent Space Book 3) (Kindle Locations 607-615). Sutherland. Kindle Edition.
Kodava is of the violence-prone and emotionally unstable Gishka race, and he memorably presents himself to Amilla wearing a muzzle and body-cage designed to restrict his arm movement; precautions to keep him from tearing apart anyone nearby when (not if) he flies into a rage. His prominence in the Renaissance is indicative of how the coalition has grown more authoritarian — a trend he unsurprisingly wants to continue.
The political intrigue is balanced nicely by the adventures of Bretch and Amilla, who each make some important discoveries along the way. I can’t say much more without spoiler warnings, but the ending provides both a resolution to the saga begun with Convergent Space and an opening for additional books.
Whether the author continues with this series or explores something new, I’ll want to read it. Each book in this series, as well as his excellent novella Eleven Town, includes some truly imaginative ideas vividly described with fluid prose. The generational civil war on Estia, for example, or a high government official who must be bound up like Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs” movie. I look forward to whatever he writes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition to the Series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Sensitist is the third novel in the Convergent Space series written by John-Paul Cleary and continues the story of Earth, the Renaissance, the Phelgars, Nimits and various other vested interests in the galaxy as it is after the "first wave" which changed so much many years earlier. The Shadow Ship and the revelations of its origins and capabilities continue to echo within this novel but itself takes a step into the background as the Renaissance leader Prime Validor Kodova seeks out the man who controls the weapon that destroys worlds. If he is alive then the weapon can be taken and war can begin, if he is dead then the weapon is lost and war can begin and if there is no weapon to use then yep war can begin. In this volatile mix the human Sensitist Amilla Haretra and her companion "Uncertainty" are drawn into the cold war but find their abilities and opportunities expand to meet the numerous challenges as they cross the stars and learn some of the dark secrets of the galaxy and beyond.
The Sensitist is very entertaining installment in this series, the inclusion of the world of Estia and the intriguing character of Bretch added much to the narrative and there were certainly amusing concepts with a world and its civil war between the young and the old and the Deathist culture where advanced social media helps create a persona that lives on after a being dies.
A worthy addition to the series and highly recommend and still holds up fairly well as a standalone novel although why would you begin with the third book in the series:)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to see this series continue - as I enjoyed ...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat to see this series continue - as I enjoyed parts 1 and 2 very much. There are some very interesting parallels with contemporary society. Did I detect a hint of a reference to brexit with a world where young and old are in a perpetual war with one another? And the deathists where a person's social media interaction not only remains as a footprint beyond their lifespan, but takes on a life of its own.
Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book series!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseUtterly absorbing, the plot takes us further into space, where the characters are hoping for answers! Getting them proves to be hugely costly. But I love the drama. The is space opera at its best!!! The characters are superb , you really feel for them, good or evil!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good followup to the series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGood followup to the series though it could also work as a decent stand book alone for anyone who has not read the series. Look forward to see what comes next.
