- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2016A very good start to the series and for an author's first book! I found the writing to be very crisp and without any obvious errors - there were a few situations where the Author repeated himself across a few paragraphs, however with experience and editing I'm sure that will go away - that being said, it didn't detract from the story at all.
The only complaint I have with the book is that it feels Novella length, and isn't particularly deep. This first book felt like an all out sprint as events unfolded one after another, and I would encourage the author to take his time with the follow up books to explain more of the setting that he's developed and to go into more depth in his writing (and perhaps explain why Seb can do what he does, or why everyone in the universe seems to have a glass jaw).
All in all, you'll enjoy this book and be interested for the next installment!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2017I can tell you this honestly, I didn't expect the ending that this book had. It's not that I didn't see it coming, I should have the entire time -- but I really didn't. I didn't read much of the synopsis before buying this. I knew of Michael Robertson from other series and other books in my TBR pile. I saw the price (free for kindle) and the price for the audiobook (I believe it was $1.99) can't be beat. I picked it up quickly and dove into it just as fast.
The Shadow Order is about second chances. Sometimes we don't get the ones we think we deserve and other times we feel like we're given a second chance with almost no reason. Seb is a very likable character in a very unlikeable way. He's hated by almost everyone he comes across, even his own father is starting to dislike him a little bit, or at least disliking who he's becoming.
The story itself was short and concise. Really to the point (and the point was to get to the next story I believe). A lot of times when an author does that -- it makes the "prequel" or the intro book boring and unreadable. Robertson definitely writes an interesting and fun tale.
If you're a science fiction fan, there are tons of races, back story, and overall planet jumping here for you. If you like old school mysteries, Seb tries to solve a mystery himself. And if you're a thriller fan -- this book has a lot of elements reminiscent of a lot of the good thrillers I've read. So, there's something for a lot of readers here. There are even a few heartwarming moments that will lift your heart if you're feeling down.
Overall, The Shadow Order was an unexpectedly good book. I say that with the most honest intentions. I really didn't know what to expect, and I ended up enjoying it. I will definitely be checking out the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2018The Good
- Great action scenes. Well-detailed, fast paced, very cinematic.
- Had a very visual Star Wars inspired feel, especially with aliens.
- Interesting environments. Loved the use of odd weather.
- I liked the backstory involving humanity and what it meant for the protagonist.
- Couldn't put the book down once it got going (about 1/3 in)
- The main character is flawed enough to be interesting. You know he's usually going to the right thing, but he messes up a lot too and is tempted by selfishness.
The Bad
- Had a very boring and non space-opera feel for first 30% of book.
- I had trouble accepting a basic premise of the story: that the main character could confidently resolve ALL fights, regardless of circumstance, with one punch.
- No major plot arc. Reads like a fantasy travel-adventure but without a quest of any kind. The main characters are young, have no goal, and are completely reactionary. There's no moment where they make a choice and set out to accomplish something beyond moment-to-moment survival.
- The most significant character change and proactive choice of the protagonist happens "off-camera" during a time jump between two chapters.
The Ugly
- A few minor spelling and formatting issues, but not too many.
- The protagonist's behavior, overall theme, and narrator's use of modern slang seemed juvenile and may "draw aggro".
- The repetitious use of mixed metaphors were sharp enough to slice bread. If only the book's editor could cut so well.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2022I have read "The Alpha Plague" Series by Michael Robertson and that was great, so I decided to see what else he had. I am a big fan of the Expanse, so I decided to give this a try and it was a great book. If I wasn't already started on another series I would definitely by the next book, and probably all the rest as well. I read the entire book in about 4 days because I just couldn't stop reading it. Great read for anyone who likes futuristic space travel books.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2017Okay, this is the first of a series but can stand alone, but you won't want it to. Yes, maybe some details on how the characters can do what they needs some elaboration but only a purist will complain. I found this to be lively and entertaining. The ending actually surprised me (that doesn't happen often) that I did NOT see coming. I will definitely keep reading this series and this is worth your time. I feel like I just found my way out of a dark, unlit locked house and got the door open. So now, there is a world of opportunities and I am eager to read the next in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2017I came to this book and didn't expect much, but I'm pleased to say that I was absolutely sucked in by this novel. Crafting a rich and expansive story with environments so rich you can immerse yourself in a space opera like no other. Interesting characters you can actually care about and twist at the end that just hits all the right notes. I'm extremely excited to continue on with this series and will be recommending it to all my friends. Well worth the read.
