The Stardust Thief: A SPELLBINDING DEBUT FROM FANTASY'S BRIGHTEST NEW STAR (The Sandsea Trilogy) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,916 ratings

'The Stardust Thief will transport you, enchant you, and revive your belief in the magic of storytelling' Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun

Inspired by stories from
One Thousand and One Nights, The Stardust Thief weaves the gripping tale of a legendary smuggler, a cowardly prince and a dangerous quest across the desert to find a magical lamp.

Neither here nor there, but long ago . . .

Loulie al-Nazari is the Midnight Merchant: a criminal who, with the help of her jinn bodyguard, hunts and sells illegal magic. When she saves the life of a cowardly prince, she draws the attention of his powerful father, the sultan, who blackmails her into finding an ancient lamp.

With no choice but to obey or be executed, Loulie journeys with the sultan's oldest son to find the artefact. Aided by her bodyguard, who has secrets of his own, they must survive ghoul attacks, outwit a vengeful jinn queen and confront a malicious killer from Loulie's past. And, in a world where story is reality and illusion is truth, Loulie will discover that everything - her enemy, her magic, even her own past - is not what it seems, and she must decide who she will become in this new reality.

City of Brass."―C. L. Clark, author of The Unbroken

"Reading
The Stardust Thief feels like being told a story on a long, moonlit night: intimate and wondrous. I was held under its powerful enchantment from the first page to the very last."―Allison Saft, author of Down Comes the Night

"Shimmering with magic,
The Stardust Thief is a gripping adventure set against an immersive world. Abdullah masterfully crafts a tale, with equally chaotic and lovable characters, that reads like it is meant to be told around the fire beneath a starlit sky."―Aamna Qureshi, author of The Lady or the Lion

"Abdullah has created a sumptuous feast of richly layered classic tales, and characters who will have you hungering to unravel their mysteries.
The Stardust Thief will transport you, enchant you, and revive your belief in the magic of storytelling.”―Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun

“Sizzling with action and secrets,
The Stardust Thief is a grand adventure with unforgettable characters, enchanting magic, and plenty of heart!”―Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage

"[
The Stardust Thief] nods to such classic tales from One Thousand and One Nights as “Aladdin,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” and the framing tale of Scheherazade, but then charts its own thrilling territory.... A marvelous plunge into a beautifully crafted adventure."
 ―
Kirkus

"Abdullah’s ambitious debut, the first in the Sandsea Trilogy, weaves an intricate tale that draws from the legends of
One Thousand and One Nights to create something entirely new.... Lush descriptions bring the setting to life, while the focus on myth and storytelling contrasted against the characters’ harsh reality adds to the sense of mystery and enchantment. This powerful, intriguing adventure will leave readers eager for more."―Publishers Weekly

"Abdullah’s Sandsea Trilogy kicks off with a beautifully crafted novel heavily influenced by the art of storytelling and personal narrative, especially that of the classic Arabian tale One Thousand and One Nights.... Abdullah is a gifted storyteller, weaving together three disparate points of view in order to bring to life a rich world, rife with magic, where anything that can be dreamed up can happen."―
Booklist

"Abdullah writes stories like a sparkling, burning thing painted against the pitch-black night, ever out of our reach. Gently touched with lyrical writing, Abdullah’s talent is making you feel like magic exists."―
Buzzfeed

"An impressive first in an expected trilogy, one that hits high notes of several popular themes and trends (found families, classics retold), but offers fresh perspectives as well. It will delight readers who appreciate highly atmospheric books. Share widely, not just with fantasy readers."―
Library Journal

"It’s hard to believe that Abdullah, an American-Kuwaiti writer who grew up on some of the traditional tales she embellishes, is a debut writer. The prose is polished, the world rich with depth, and the characterizations endearing."―
Paste Magazine

"Abdullah brilliantly unfolds a tale built from the threads of
One Thousand and One Nights...Abdullah splendidly transports readers into this world by layering details into the story so deftly that the veil between magic and reality slips and flows delightfully."―Library Journal, "Best SF/Fantasy of 2022"

I absolutely LOVED this book!!!
5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely LOVED this book!!!
It feels like, all of the books I have been reading lately, are filled with much sadness, loss, extreme violence and excessive amounts of detailed sex (The Witcher series to name one, which I loved) but I wanted a change and this was exactly what I was looking for. It ticked all the boxes for me personally. No, it is not full of spicy sex scenes but if you are looking for a good read, that has a little bit of everything, from action, adventure, magic, humor, unlikely friendships, a quest, just a great unique story, that will take you away to another place, neither here nor there, then this is the book for you! Yes, it has a bit of murder, death, torture and possession but it was not to the point of gruesome or gory. (it is classed as adult fantasy but I personally, thought it could be in the category of young adult) As with any first book in a series, there is a lot of world-building and getting to know the characters, the Jinn being my favorite. It is so well written, I can not wait for the next book in this series. And just look at that cover, I mean, come on, I'd buy it just for it's beauty alone but the pages within, are truly just as beautiful. 5 Stars *****

GoodReads needs to address their policy regarding a one time review on a novel, irregardless of the number of times you’ve read the book.

Because, in all fairness, people mature, pick up on different aspects of a novel, and short of editing the original review, it’s not fair, or no longer even an accurate representation of what the reader took away from the novel.

If you can add multiple times, you’ve read a particular book, then you should have the ability to list your viewpoints, observations, and sentiments. The next time around, so much more can stand out you may have missed the first time around.

After all, most of us hope for the best, and strive for evolvement and developmental advancement with maturity as we age, with us aspiring to transpire and cultivate our former soul to a higher level of growth, consciousness, and wisdom, regardless of where we gain this insight from, whether it be through reading, studying, or personal experiences.

It also didn’t help that the second installment date was postponed numerous times, and as much as some of us read, it may appear as a blur or a blip the next installment we pick up, adding to the confusion almost 3 years later.

I appreciate or NetGalley and publishers, for giving me the opportunity to review the ARC of book 2 in the series.
I had to anxiously wait for the call from my local library again, in order to bring myself up to speed as to what took place before, by reasborbing book 1.

It didn’t take long before major events cropped up, and brought forth the memories, of what happens later in the novel. Though out of fear
I might miss something, I wanted to continue reading through to the end.

I’m so glad I did read it through to the end again. I picked up on a lot more the second time around. Especially at the end. The challenges , struggles, conflicts, all take place at a fast paced speed, and rapidly emerge, and I found it was easy to forget some of what had transpired.

The worlds in which all this takes place in are simply amazing, coming alive in Abdullah’s descriptions, whether it’s at the souk, the underground markets, the palace, or under the sand seas for the Jinn’s worlds.

The character developments are comprehensive, insightful, and balanced and fleshed out-whether it’s friend or foe. You can’t help but root for Loulie, as well as Mazen, and even Alsha, hoping she makes the right decision and comes over to the good side of the dispute.

    Absolutely 5 stars of entertainment!

Original Review From August 25TH, 2022
I was thoroughly captivated from the beginning of this book, only to be very disappointed with myself when I realized I had messed up.
This was an interlibrary e-book loan, and I had totally forgetten until it was too late and automatically removed and returned from my books. Turns out the wait time was over 3 weeks so it was easier just to start over when it finally arrived-again.

I absolutely loved the majority of this book. As usual though, with any read, there were a couple of things I found great delight in, as well as a couple of things that I didn't care for or that flat out annoyed me.

So well written, it draws you in with the flow of the writing. Loved the main character and her back story. It reels you in moving forward, causing you to want more, and being disappointed when you really must put the book down for a bit. (This is the part where you have to be the sensible adult and own up to responsibilities and the daily drudgery of chores. Yuck!!)

The world building is so vivid in its characterizations and depictions, you feel as if you're experiencing it first-hand, in person.

I generally wait until all books of a series have been released before starting, but I couldn't help starting this one, even knowing the second isn't due to be released until the fall of 2023. Now, I'm anxiously awaiting the release. Argh!

One part where I got annoyed was during a majorly intense battle where things were presented almost too fast and hard. It caused me to feel overwhelmed, and I was having trouble following along and keeping up, let alone to separate out and understand what everyone was saying. All at once, "truths" started coming out from all the major players in the book and I actually had to re-read them a couple of times, in order to understand what exactly was the importance and weight of all the information that had previously been withheld. It became a huge overload of information. I felt like I was going to short circuit at one point from the massive dumping of data.

It wasn't enough for me not to continue reading, and the ending itself, all made it worthwhile. I am SO GLAD I didn't. Now I'm just stuck in limbo, impatiently awaiting the 2nd and 3rd to be released.

I'll admit, I was first drawn to this book by both the connection to my first name and Scherazade's 1001 Nights stories. But Chelsea Abdullah has done so much more with that continuing world.

I really like to how the jinn were described in their impact on the desert, magical rejects, and the Middle Eastern philosophy divorced from religion was really interesting. A lot of the attire and customs DO have to do with the environment and are not just from interpretations of Islam. Abdullah is from Kuwait and definitely knows the region and storytelling style really well and it shows.

This reads very much like YA in how it focuses on young adults, morality of action, little cursing and no sexual actions at all. Could also be the setting, but I still get a YA vibe. Not bad, just noting.

The lead jinn, Qadir, is a very compelling character. I really enjoyed the equal closeness and ambiquity of his relationship with Loulie. She's a strong heroine and I identified with her desire to be free and strong.

The male foil, Mazen, is a bit more lackluster (1/2 a star off) in his whiny prince way, but he helps the reader learn about the world. But another 1/2 star off for not well defining the world. Is it JUST the desert? Is there an ocean? Who do they trade with besides small towns and Bedouins?

Lastly, the prickly thief Aisha is a darker mystery with her own goals. I liked watching her grow along the journey, especially as she had to support Mazen and learn more about jinn.

I'm definitely excited for the sequel--the story practically ends on a cliffhanger! I hope we get Qadir's POV and continue to expand the universe.

Book was listed on Harvard list of books for 6th graders. My kid needed to choose a book for a book report. The book was so exciting he got through all the pages in time. I enjoyed the historical accuracy of the (now) ruins weaved into the story.

Ok I liked this book, but I didn't love it.
Cons: characters, neither Loulie or Mazen were particularly like able. Mazen barely gets any character development in 500 or so pages. Loulie was still the same person through out the book. Barely any development. We rarely hear about her trust issues. Her attraction to Ahmed didn't even make sense. Like bro, he kills people that you love. How can you be in love with a murderer? She struggles with it for about 3 sentences. A'isha had so much potential and felt wasted. What made A'isha accept that deal. There was mountainous hatred and the next moment deal o.O

The pace of the plot: it took me three weeks to get to the 50% mark. It was just so slow and did not capture my imagination.

Pros: Qadir, Resurrectionist, the setting. The premise and setting was something out of the childhood stories my grandma used to tell me. The wonder and awe that the stunning setting inspired was amazing! I could have read pages and pages of descriptions of all the magical places the quest went on.

Qadir was mysterious and endearing at the same time. I wanna know more and more about him.

It was a good effort. I will definitely read the next one, since I want more Qadir, Ressurectionist and Rijah.

Taking on a journey forced on to them, the characters, enemy to one another in this story, form an alliance.

Soon after Loulie's entire tribe was exterminated by a band of thieve, she meets a wandering man (who is much more than simply a man). She vows to avenge her tribe, and Quadir promises to help her in her quest.

Years pass, and Loulie become the infamous Midnight merchant, seeker and seller of priceless Jinn artefacts.
A reputation that has attracted all kinds of attention, fortunate as well as dangerous.

This very much not so legal practice places her on the Sultan's radar whi ends up capturing her and giving her one of two choices:
Die or set out on a journey to find a relic tied to the royal family.

    And so, the journey begins.

The story hooks you immediately and it gets very captivating from page one. The author writes as if ypu were experiencing the story in real time, tying the emotional flow into action and thoughts.

The character's personalities remain consistent, even throughout the changes that happen to them, and makes them questions who they are tho themselves and what they live for.
While some development seemed long and irrelevant to the goal of the story, I realized the series of events that every single chapter is written with purpose.
The story's structure is seemless and perfect for those who are looking for a story that's makes you gighle and kick and gasp.

I desperately wanted to read this book from its description and how it was inspired by One Thousand and One Nights. It didn’t disappoint.

The characters were either loveable or got good character development that you grew to love them, which I like to see rather than someone being perfect from the beginning. I also enjoyed seeing the characters’ relationships grow. I got a very found family feel from them.

I’m normally good at guessing plots but lots of things took me by surprise which was refreshing. Only downside to the story is it felt slow in the middle. The end more than made up for it though. I’m super excited about the next book to see where the story goes.

It’s not quite a 5 star but 4 feels quite low for it. It’s like 4 stars most of the book with a 4.5 star ending. Technically it‘s 4.25 stars I guess but then I’d have to rate it 4 stars here and that doesn’t feel right.
