The Storm (Small Town Romantic Suspense): A Berry Springs Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,705 ratings

The snow is dropping in Berry Springs... and so are the bodies.

On a pitch-black wintry night, Detective Dean Walker finds a man in the middle of an icy road, with a bullet between his eyes—a murder that is eerily similar to his father’s, which was never solved. Coincidence? No, Dean doesn’t believe in coincidences. He also doesn’t believe in love at first sight, until he meets the victim’s wife.

Psychologist Heidi Novak is hardly settling into her new mansion in the small, country town of Berry Springs when she receives a late-night visit by the handsome Dean Walker. Seconds after learning that her husband has been murdered, gunshots explode around her and it becomes apparent that she is the next target.

With a massive winter storm looming, Dean races to find the killer and keep Heidi safe, while facing a long a list of suspects, including Heidi’s arrogant sister-in-law and a local, crusty cowboy. As the evidence mounts, Dean becomes more convinced than ever that his father’s murder is connected to the death of Heidi’s husband.

And he can’t help but think . . . will Heidi be the second love he loses to the ice-cold killer?

The Storm is a standalone romantic suspense novel.

I love her style of writing. Descriptive but not too descriptive. Love that when you finish a book in a series, you know all you need to know about everyone, no cliff hangers. You go to the next book in the series, some of the characters flow over into the story, but a new story line begins. You recognize certain characters from another series (for instance the sheriff, personnel from the autopsy field); maybe someone that had a lesser part in another series. Love, hate, friendships, death, sex; she has it all written in a way that you just can't put the book down.

Amanda McKinney is getting better and better. This is my favorite in the Triology do far. Dean is traveling down the road to Berry Springs when he runs inton a man with a bullet in his head. When he goes to inform the widow, she is shovered with bullets. He falls for her while trying to keep her safe and trying to figure out who especially trying to kill her and who killed her husband. Th u still one will keep you guessing. I was given this book by Hidden Gems for an honest and freely given review.

Ms McKinney weaves a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. For a very small town, Berry Springs has a lot of serious crime. The BSPD has its hands full when a native son of a wealthy family is found murdered close to his estate. Detective Dean is investigating his first case. He has a huge surprise waiting that will change his life. There are several romantic relationships that are part of this story. Fast paced and exciting.

I read a lot and quite often find myself starting one - trying it out - and giving up very shortly. In this novel I looked to the percent read and was shocked when it said 62%. It was so good! The flow of the story was so well done. Characters and setting were easy to picture. I’m proud of Ms. McKinney to whom I’m a fellow Arkansan. Great job Ma’am!

This is a pretty good book, she needs a better proof reader though. A cop can't have a first time interview twice and there can't be a fire in a real fireplace without logs.

A simple who-done-it, but with no clues, so if you guess correctly consider yourself brilliant. A small mountain town in the dead of winter with the description of the snow and ice and cold very well done! Heidi is a psychologist who marries Clint because she thinks it’s time. That is strange. Then Clint is murdered in unusual circumstances, and the almost-Detective who is investigating the murder, Dean, is instantly attracted to Heidi. She feels the same towards him. I’m not sure why Dean became a cop after his father was murdered 7 years prior. Their ranch meant everything to Dean, but when he joined the police force his mother had to hire help to keep the ranch going.

The murderer’s personality was never fully developed in the storyline, so it was a bit anticlimactic. The book just feels a little rushed.

Loved this book! I enjoyed how the author painted the pictures of each character so well. It’s as if they came alive right before my eyes & before I realized it was happening, I felt like I knew them. This book was the perfect balance of wanting to read faster to find out what happens & wanting to slow down because I didn’t want it to be over. I story line kept me guessing. I’m pretty sure I mentally accused each character of being the killer at one point or another. I am a huge fan of this author’s style!
