Can a spirited governess find happiness with an enigmatic viscount?

Regency London

Having spent a childhood summer with Viscount Giles Weston, Angelica Wayne has never forgotten his kindness.

But when he employs her as his daughter’s governess, she finds him cold and formidable.

A widower, Giles is engaged to the beautiful but indifferent
Lady Barbara Darlington. Darkly cynical, he avoids emotional commitment and wishes to be married in name only.

Despite Giles’ attitude, Angelica comes to enjoy his company, and her feelings for him start to rekindle.

When Barbara calls off the engagement, Giles asks Angelica to take her place as his bride.

And Angelica must decide whether she can marry a man seemingly incapable of returning her affection…

What is the reason for Giles’ haughtiness? Can Angelica thaw his frosty exterior?

Or are both condemned to a life without love?

THE SUBSTITUTE BRIDE is classic Regency romance full of suspense and intrigue.

4 1/2 stars. This was an lovely romance! Angelica was a fine young lady and it was rewarding to see her find a chance at happiness. Giles was very cold but he had been hurt and betrayed. It was so nice to see him find love. The side characters were also interesting, including the servants. The story had love and passion but the details were subtle and not too embarrassing. The conversation at the end was great, and the last sentence was perfect!

For the first 80% of this book, I was going for a rare (for me) 5 Star rating. I loved the characters in this book. Angelina becomes governess to Viscount Giles young daughter. It is her first time working and her rather spirited ways seem to bemuse the Viscount. She quickly wins the devotion of his equally spirited daughter and also, his younger sister who is about to make enter her first season. Soon she is spending her mornings teaching his daughter and her afternoons chaperoning his sister (unlikely, but what the heck?) around town. Everyone who meets Angelina is charmed by her except the coldly beautiful fiance who he is marrying in a matter of weeks. As I said before, I found the first 80% of the book charming and eagerly awaited the HEA. Then....????? After the wedding, the tone of the book changes. Especially when the viscount enters her bedroom for the first time days after the wedding. I struggled with the rating and couldn't give it a 3 because I really enjoyed everything until after the wedding. (Everything after that needs to be rewritten IMO.) But, I certainly couldn't give it a 5. So, it's a 4 with reservations.

For those interested: There is what appears to be a near rape that turns into a PG-13 sex scene. Odd, I know, but it's the only way that I can describe it.

A lot of missed cues between the couple. She was full of pride and quick to anger. Although somewhat understandable with her upbringing, it became tiresome. I have to comment on the words and descriptions used that seemed oddly placed. Had to lookup some....And they still didn't fit. At least this is not how modern English is spoken.

Not sure what book the negative reviews read but this was a great love story. The H loved the h but couldn’t tell her because he was already betrothed. Because of the fiancé changed her mind, the h became the substitute bride. There was no rape as noted in some reviews. Because the H was so drunk he thought there was. Loved the ending and the HEA.

Very appealing heroine with good supporting characters and a nice view of family life. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and plot, the heroine is polished, nurturing, dignified with a good sense of humor that you can't help cheering for. Enjoyable for 97% of the book, until the wedding at almost the end.

The book's last 30 pages or so describe one intensely, deeply hurtful disagreement/mistaken assumption after another between the hero and heroine including 2 scenes somewhat like marital rape, although not quite, but more uncomfortable than expected in this type of Regency. The last section of the book nearly ruined it. If you want a happy story, stop reading on the day of the wedding, close the book, don't read the last pages unless you don't mind some cringe-worthy scenes. Does it seem to work out in the end....that's what we are to believe but for me, the ending tainted what was otherwise a terrific story.

I am definitely going to check out more from this author. I really liked the character of Angelica. And I loved the set up of the plot. But after the marriage was unnecessarily drawn out. And I wouldn’t fully classify her as closed door and that is a pet peeve. Otherwise, the writing was surprisingly good.

I think I read this book many many years ago. I fell in love with books set in the Regency period. This was so refreshing to read. So many books today are so laden with sex there is barely any story. It was wonderful to read a story about two people finding their way together. If you like Georgette Heyer, I think you’ll enjoy this author. I am so glad this author is on Kindle, I foresee many happy hours of reading ahead.

A clash of prides derails the meeting of hearts when Viscount Giles, a wary widower, hires Angel, close friend Billy's green-eyed, undowered orphan cousin, as companion/governess for his pert 17-year-old sister and unruly 9-year old daughter. The lively cast and author's cunning insight into characters and relationships gives classic situations an entertaining twist.

This is my first book by this author, and I must say I wasn't disappointed. The book was written in true Regency style, and a very pleasant read. It was very sad the the heroine Angelica had to move out of the only home she had known because her cousins younger wife was jealous of her, but she was determined to make a success of her life as a Governess, and she did despite being thrown in at the deep end. 'Angels' and Gile's story was an uphill struggle for Angel, and if not for misunderstandings would have been quite straightforward, Gile's unfortunately had a lot of emotional issues and once he got over those the couple were able to gain their y'all ever after'
I would thoroughly recommend this book, I read it with Kindle Unlimited but I must say I will be purchasing my own copy as I feel it is worth keeping

4.0 out of 5 stars Governess Story
Reviewed in India on December 10, 2020
This is not vintage Dorothy Mack, as quite a few other books are. She has a sparkling style and gift of the narrative which has salvaged the book from being a pedestrian Governess Widower love story, yet more could have been expected.
