The Walls We Build: A compelling WW2 historical mystery of misguided honour, love, and redemption Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 145 ratings

Disastrous choices, heartbreaking consequences, but a love that endures a lifetime.

During the 1920s Frank, Florence and Hilda are inseparable, but when Frank marries Hilda for duty rather than love the friendship between the three fragments. Then comes WW2 and Frank goes on to make other catastrophic choices - the repercussions of which will leave a lasting and tragic legacy.

For over fifty years Florence has been the keeper of Frank’s secrets. Soon after Frank’s death she writes to his grandson, Richard, hinting at his family’s troubled past. Richard gradually learns more about Florence, her generosity of spirit and love for his grandad, but as he digs deeper, he will unearth disturbing secrets, which not only haunted Frank, but will impact on him too.

When a pivotal encounter between Frank and Winston Churchill during WW2 is revealed and a mystery relative in a psychiatric hospital discovered, how much more does Florence dare disclose about her and Frank? And is Richard ready to hear?

Spanning three generations comes a multi-layered and sumptuously atmospheric story showing how - sometimes - the only way forward is through the past.

A story so well researched and authenticity woven into a memorable story. The characters are finely drawn and fleshed out. The transitions between the two different time frames is smooth and effortless. If you want to read a story where you become part of it, this is the on to read. I love recent history and tales of WWII especially. If you like shows such as Home Fires, or Foyle's War, you will love this book. Looking forward to her next book!

The setting is genuine if you have ever been to Chartwell. The history was authentic. I enjoyed the referrals to Churchill himself. The characters were lovable and the story was so gripping. Once I started this book I could not put it down. Thoroughly enjoyable! The book cover is stunning and once you know the story it is even more special.

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.” Family secrets, and the repercussions wrought by them, is the theme of this book.

I thought that this was a great story, it was well developed and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I thought that the book started off really well and I knew within a few chapters that it was a book for me and I knew it was one that I would want to stay up late to finish it off.  I really enjoyed how the story was told and the different times.  The plot I found to be well crafted and the author has done a brilliant job bringing the book to life and it is a really good debut!

I thought that the characters were well developed and worked really well to carry the story.  The pace was great for me, this was definitely an intriguing read and one that I could not put down!!

It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon!  I thought it was a well written and addictive read and loved the plot!!  Very highly recommended!!

I'm really enjoying The Walls We Build so far. Quick, punchy sentences, naturalistic dialogue, and solid pacing are what has drawn me in so far. I'm in Chapter 4 now, and it's interesting to see the internal dialogue and conflict with the character Florence -- I guess you never really know what someone is thinking, until you read it in a novel. As a male reader, I wasn't sure if I could get into it at first, but I quickly came to appreciate the quick, punchy pacing of the novel with relatively short chapters, so that has made it a quick read so far, and something I would recommend to others. So interesting to hear the internal narration underneath the dialogue!

The Walls We Build is a true page-turner. The main characters Frank, Florence and Hilda are so expertly crafted I felt part of their journey. I really enjoyed the historical setting of WW2 leading through to the present day with in-depth authenticity. The presence of Winston Churchill threading into the story adds to the placement of time and setting. The intrigue of secrets unravelling with disastrous consequences keep the pages turning. This epic story is beautifully written and I look forward to reading more from Jules Hayes.

Where to start? Only received this engrossing and often heartbreaking book just 5 days ago, but unable to leave it unattended! Every character is real and rounded by backstories and dreams unfulfilled. By tragedy, with some redemption at a time of peril for the whole country, and beyond to 2004 Jules Hayes has created memorable and believable human scenarios which everyone can relate to. A tour de force! Huge achievement.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have recommended it to friends. The book has already received some extremely positive, lengthy and very well deserved reviews. I particularly enjoyed the fact that Winston Churchill
featured as one of the characters in the book. It must have involved lots of research and I learned a lot from that.
I very much look forward to her next histotical novel
