Following retirement, after thirty-two years as a police officer, working mainly as a detective, Michael returned to the deadly business of murder, as a writer. His past work brought him very close to some nasty characters, including psychopaths, and gruesome cases and he draws on that experience to craft his novels: There is nothing gentle about Michael's stories.

His landmark novel 'Heart of the Demon', published in 2012, introduced Detective Sergeant Hunter Kerr. He has since written five novels and a novella featuring him. He also released the first of his DS Scarlett Macey books in 2016.

He is also the author of a stand alone crime novella 'Chasing Ghosts' and a true crime thriller 'Safecracker'.

The second book in a brand new and exciting UK police procedural series.

This time Dr Hamlett Mottrell has passed his detective exams and joined the police force and joining Alix Rainbow.

Someone is calling students with creepy messages and sending weird wedding invitations. The targeted victims then disappear and are presumed dead. Except one survives.

This book does revisit the Book 1 plot but rather than senseless padding practiced by other authors of the same genre, this intertwines seamlessly with Book 2.

Further character development takes place and it's mostly a fast paced read. The bond between Alix and Hamlet grows stronger but with the now familiar handbrake on intimacy.

I wasn't too sure if such a scheme exists where civilians can be fast tracked into detective-hood especially those that had been charged (and cleared) of multiple murder. That was the only thing that jarred. This happens at the beginning of the book so no spoilers.

Overall, an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next Dr Mottrell book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look behind you!!

Enjoyed this Michael Fowler thriller. Alix and Hamlet are now working as a team rather than detective and suspect. Read book 1 of this series 1st. They are investigating the disappearance of a local female student. What follows is a trail of missing women as far back as Alix's days at university. Hamlet's background as a psychologist helps them look at the characteristics of the crime and identify a possible suspect. Fortunately, someone discovers where the missing women have been held, and then the hunt really starts in earnest. The outcome is not one I imagined. Well written, good thriller and enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars I’m Not a Crime Writer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 2022
I’ve read all Michaels books but this one left me slightly disappointed. It had all the usual brilliant procedural stuff and it helps that it is all around where I live. The characters are still building but for the 2nd time in this series of 2, events transpired that it was a wrongful arrest by someone attempting to implicate someone else. Also involving a main character as a victim seemed a bit too similar to the first book.

Unfortunately it was no surprise who did it as the clues were released far too early. Then again I’m not a brilliant crime writer that I still think Mr Fowler is. I will still look for his next book.
