***

The Master of Darkness is rising his head before his time, throwing all of Sahara into chaos.

Right after his studies, young Light alchemist Yor Castel sets off on a journey around the world to seek his fortune. He encounters a runaway in danger, tied to the awakening of an ancient evil.

In just a day, Elmeida Yuri, heir to the Dark tribe of Sahara, loses her entire family to a gruesome death. Her only hope lies in a small island-country far away from home, where she meets a promising young wizard. But her refuge is short-lived, and, together with her new friend, flees once again, this time - on a quest to save the world.

The ones who first defeated the ancient evil are now too weak; it's up to the new mages to step up and fulfil the role set by the prophecy.

All of my favorite parts of a good story are found in this book: magic, travel, mystery, love. The Young Foreigner is the beginning of a journey I can't wait to continue taking. Looking forward to book 2.

Although raw, but nonetheless, very poetic storytelling. I enjoyed reading it, and look forward to what more this author writes and how she develops, in the future. Good read.

The Young Foreigner is the story of two people with opposite magic come together to destroy the rising chaos. The author has vividly described the world and the scenes. It was an amazing adventure, fantasy story to read and a great page turner. I got my hands on this book recently and I am glad I was able to do so. I will be equally excited to read the next book too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and magical fantasy.

This was an enjoyable fantasy adventure.

The concept was interesting, the author has created a whole new world with many magical creatures. It is about two youngsters with magical powers, set off on a dangerous journey to stop chaos from awakening. There is mystery, adventure and magic.

The best thing about this book, according to me, was it's characters. They had depth, they could touch your heart and even surprise you.

The pace was slow but the story was gripping enough to make you want to read more. There is a twist at the end that promises a sequel.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book. It would appeal to young readers and fantasy lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an intriguing novel The Young Foreigner is!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 4, 2021
This book is a delightful read.
The story follows Yor and Elmeida, two young protagonists, one with light magic and the other with dark magic, who set out on a journey to defeat Chaos.

What I enjoyed about this book was the blending of fantasy tropes, myth and fairytale. Yor is Merlin's apprentice and Elmeida is a descendant of Morgana. Along with nods to Arthurian legends, there are hints of the Wizard of Oz and other well-known works. However, this novel is in no way a retelling of what has been written before.
The prose was very well written. There are a few occasions where some phrases suggest English is not the Author's first language. However, this did not distract from the story. If anything it gave the novel a quirky edge.
I enjoyed Yor and Elmeida's journey, the building of their relationship and their interaction with other characters, especially Raven and Sheen. Loved the talking animal shifters.
Towards the end, I did feel that Lorinda's (Elmeida's sister) arc was a bit rushed. I would have liked to have known more, but this is a personal preference, and it didn't affect the overall story.
The world in which Avalon Green has created is vivid and well constructed. The pacing of the short chapters works really well.
If you like YA fantasy with clean romance, then I'm sure you'll love this book.
