Three Times The Trouble (Corin Hayes Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

Even when Corin does something right, it all goes wrong. Now he is on the run from criminal gangs and the law. With danger coming from every direction, can he save the lives of two children as well as his own? It isn't going to be easy, but when has life in the corporation controlled cities ever been.

"(A) book that isn't short on action or imagination and the setting is an interesting change of pace, so check it out!" - Mark Lawrence (Author of Prince of Thorns, Prince of Fools)

"Truly stellar world-building, which combines all the griminess of cyberpunk with the majesty and terror of the sea." paperplanereviews.blogspot.com

"Entertaining and exciting: Silent City is the start of a series I'll certainly be following with interest." - Laura M Hughes (Author of Danse Macabre, Founder of Fantasy-Hive.co.uk)

"Damn good fun, intriguing as hell, different and exciting, I devoured this book." - Dyrk Ashton (Author of Paternus)

"It had plenty of twists and turns, and I was on the edge of my submarine pilot seat once or twice. The ending left lots of room for more adventure but wrapped up this particular part of the tale. It was very well done. I like Corin’s sense of humour too, so that was a plus." - SuperStarDrifter.com (Top Amazon Contributor)

“Corin, as a character, has been put through the wringer quite a bit and you feel for him or I certainly did. He’s awesome!” - raptureinbooks.com “Corin Hayes' adventure in Silent City is an altogether more visceral first-person adventure set in a far future where humanity has fled beneath the waves to live in undersea cities. The story is packed with action from the first page which has our hero preparing for a beating to the last where our hero is... (spoilers as Riversong would say).” - (T O Munro, Lady of The Helm, Contributor on Fantasy-Hive.co.uk)

Corin Hayes Series

When war broke out, it didn't last long. A few threats, a rattling of sabers, a promise of retaliation, and they unleashed their biological weapons on the world.

Populations crashed overnight. Cities emptied. Factories were abandoned. Roads stilled. Governments crumbled.

The corporations were ready, suspiciously so, some said. They had been exploiting the sea for years. Mines, factories, and outposts in the depths. Here was sanctuary they said. Here you could be safe. Here you can live and thrive.

And, by the way, you work for us, you fight for us, and we might give you just enough to live, but we'll claw it all back in rent, water rates, air rates and a thousand other ways.

Welcome to the brand-new world.

What a mess.

- Corin Hayes

About the Author

Geoff Matthews began reading in the cot. His mother, at her wits end with the constant noise and unceasing activity, would plop him down on the soft mattress with an encyclopaedia full of pictures then quietly slip from the room. His father, ever the pragmatist, declared, that they should, "throw the noisy bugger out of the window." Happily this event never came to pass (or if it did Geoff bounced well). Growing up, he spent Sunday afternoons on the sofa watching westerns and Bond movies with the self-same parent who had once wished to defenestrate him. When not watching the six-gun heroes or spies being out-acted by their own eyebrows he devoured books like a hungry wolf in the dead of winter. Beginning with Patrick Moore and Arthur C Clarke he soon moved on to Isaac Asimov. However, one wet afternoon in a book shop in his home town, not far from the standing stones of Avebury, he came across a book by David Eddings - and soon Sci-Fi gave way to Fantasy. Many years later, Geoff finally realised a dream and published his own fantasy novel, The Stone Road, in the hopes that other hungry wolves out there would find a hearty meal. Seven Deaths of an Empire from Solaris Books due out June 2021.

Rep'd by Jamie Cowen.

After studying for a Diploma in Creative Writing, G R Matthews taught the subject at A Level and holds a BSc (Hons) in Geography. Currently working in education with a focus on Child Protection and Safeguarding, he finds time to write in the evenings between battles to get his children to go to bed and the desire to binge watch Eureka on Netflix. He has also studied (been hit a lot) Judo, Kung fu, Wing Chun and Kickboxing - and is not particularly skilled in any of them (hence the being hit a lot).

A D&D enthusiast, G R Matthews prefers the rogue (stabby stabby… who me?) as it suits his imagination and allows him to hide from all the things that go (accidentally) wrong during a dungeon crawl… (and no one can prove I set fire to that town… it was only a little fire, honest!). As a self-taught guitarist the best that can be said is that at least he doesn’t sing along to the songs (all the time) and the few thousand, over the years, who’ve heard him play (and sing) are mostly fine (some, to be fair, are still in recovery, but we wish them well).

At night, he sits and dreams that Spielberg, Lucas, Keanu Reeves, someone, anyone, reads his books thinks they’d make a great movie series (they would, that much is definitely true). With two children (where did they come from?), a wife (long suffering, caring, strong) and two hamsters (who actually show him the respect he deserves), G R Matthews is known for his self-deprecating sense of humour (true), his chiselled jawline (false), and his long career as a heart-throb film star (utterly false).

Corin is at it again. He gets himself into some serious trouble at home, so his guardian angel Derva finds him a job for him and his trusty Fish-Suit to get him out of the way for a while.

So, as only Corin can, he gets into even bigger trouble while on that job. He’s tasked with finding a precious artifact from a sunken container ship. Sounds normal, but when the box he finds is empty they accuse him of stealing the goods. And by ‘they’ I of course mean the Chinese mafia of this particular section of underwater dystopian Earth. Whoops!

So, while he’s locked up in their prison he meets two other prisoners, a 5 year old girl and her teenage nanny. Being Corin, he plans a daring escape, and of course, breaks the kids out too. And thus, a grand adventure full of submarine chases and Fish-Suit antics is had! He miiiiiiight have ended up in the middle of an underwater, heavily traditional, limited to use of ancient weapons……. gang war. Because of course he did. This is Corin Hayes we’re talking about.

I liked this one even more than the first two, which I liked quite a lot. This one explores an entirely different part of the world than either of the first two, which was cool. I like how Corin goes to a different place each time, but always ends up right where he started nonetheless. His own table, where nobody cares about his story.

This particular one felt like a stronger story than the one before it. I’m not sure I can explain this well, but it just felt better written to me. The plot was more engaging, and while I have always liked Corin himself quite a lot, this one had other characters that I quite enjoyed too. It was harder to put this one down, and I was finding myself making excuses to sit down and read far more often with it. Not that I didn’t with the first two, but in this case I had a lot to do besides reading, and found myself reading nonetheless. That’s a formula for a pretty great book for me!~

I got a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review of it.

Disclaimer: I was given an ARC in exchange for a review. The number of stars or content of the review was *not* discussed with Mr. Matthews.

If I didn't know better, I'd think that Corin Hayes wants people to like him. The only other explanation is that he's a good person, and we ALL know that's not the case, right?

I think this is the best Corin Hayes book of all. G. R. Matthews has really hit his stride in this third installment in Hayes's story. The writing was tight, the editing was very good, not for a self-published book, but for any book. The story moved quickly from point to point with very little if any downtime in between. I have a hard time these days keeping my attention on books, but not this one; this one I couldn't put down.

Basically, the story starts out because Hayes has made a really bad decision. Surprise, surprise. His employer decides to farm him out to another city to get him away while they work things out.

Of course, he finds trouble. he always does.

This time, though, he also finds a little girl that reminds him of his own lost child, and we see his heart-of-stone start to crack and Corin take on responsibility for someone else. He doesn't even think about it, which is shocking, but immediately jumps to do the "right thing."

Which, of course, turns out to be the wrong thing. As usual.

If you want to find out the details and how things turn out, you're going to have to buy or borrow this book.

    It's worth it!

Well, I'm back for the third book in the series. In this one, now that you've gotten to know the Corin Hayes character -- you have a pretty good idea of what he's thinking, and what he's going to do next. Although you also know things are never going to be as simple as they seem, you can never be quite sure where things are going to get messed up, but Corin is either going to be the cause of it, or unexpectedly in the middle of it. This is my favorite book of the series so far because you get to see him try - miserably - to help two girls in what seems to be a very bad situation. It's that he tries what is important. I'm sure the rest is just all prelude to what comes in the next book.

I was so excited to crack open this third instalment in the Corin Hayes series, set in a post-apocalyptic near-future where humanity has been forced beneath the waves, and it didn't disappoint. The first two are excellent action-adventure, a mix of Die Hard, Dashiel Hammett, and Darry Harrison (ok, I mean Harry, but I had a DH thing going). Anyway, go read them - not that it would be strictly necessary as each stands alone and it's fairly easy to get to grips with the character and situation.

This book kicks it up a notch in terms of worldbuilding and character, with Corin falling foul of undersea Triads, and also getting a few cute sidekicks. With more than just his own butt to save, the stakes are suitably raised, and it's a clear sign of a series going from strength to strength. Get aboard while you can!

Book 3 was as great as the first 2. Thanks again for the new and interesting stories. Corin Hayes self deprecating personality resonates

Takes a well used crime families at war theme, and drops it into a fresh setting.
Very well written, it really leaves you wanting more adventures with this anti hero.

Another fast paced, brilliant outing of Corin Hayes. Just when you think he's got the job done, something inevitably has and does go wrong.
Though you won't go wrong reading this.
