To Break the Rules
An irresistible enigma …
Senorita Lucia de Feria is possibly the most beautiful woman in the world and beyond a doubt the most beautiful that Viscount Cavendish has ever seen. A daring circle of friends …
When an unusual book club brings The Peculiar Ladies into her life, Lucia is charmed and lured into feeling she belongs for the first time. Between her new friends and a man she is in danger of falling for, her plans are all going awry. This beautiful Senorita has spent her entire life longing for vengeance, but she never expected to find something she cared for more along the way.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019I loved reading this story, it’s a truly lovely continuation of the stories of the Peculiar Ladies.
*warning, spoilers*
I’m always down for a feminist twist on history, and Lucia de Féria delivers that in spades. Emma really branched out in this book by exploring the ways that the English colonization of India impacted families of that time. She managed to weave it into a riveting mystery as we discovered the truth about our heroine whilst she found herself caught up in a romance she didn’t see coming. My only complaint is that the hero seemed to fall so quickly for her, but that’s only to be expected of a time period where life was short and love in a marriage was rare.
I also have to say that I enjoyed reading from the perspective of other characters in this story, getting a satisfying continuation of Matilda’s storyline. I highly recommend that any of you reading this review read this book. I couldn’t put it down for days.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019The more I read this series, the more I enjoy it.
I was a bit afraid about this one book as revenge plots are far from my favorite trope.
It usually only brings hurt and pain in its wake.
But Mrs Leech was able to mix each ingredient at the right dose from anger, fear and pain.
Lucia is there to retrieve what was stolen from her and for this, she sets a payback campaign on the man responsible for her loss. Because of her past encounters with men, she is weary of them. She knows she can’t trust nor love them.
Until a very unpolished lord shows her, some men are more than their rough facade.
Silas Anson has left behind his supposed life of privileged to rise himself from the gutter. A scandal for the ton but his path to freedom. Then he meets Lucia, a woman who seems to meddle perfectly with the London society before he had a glimpse of the real Lucia and understood she has bigger secret than him and her journey might as well drive her to hell gates.
Even if their relationship began on the wrong foot, each making assumptions about the other.
Slowly Silas will prove her he is not the usual peer, he does not want to win a contest of wealth to get his entrance to her bed, his set goal is to learn who she is and offer what she has once dreamed as a little girl.
It was a smoothly told story, a tale without fairies but some nice grandmother and friends to do the job, add magic and wits to their romance.
One more hit with this lovely new installment.
And I can’t wait for the other young women stories, each has its own personality firmly settle.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2022Lucia & Silas's story & characters were Absolutely Wonderful & Delightful.
This Story has a few twists you don't expect which makes the story so Dang good.
Page after page you will Be sitting at the edge of your seat reading what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021Another in the Girls Who Dare series, I was excited for this installment because I was anxious to learn all the details about the mysterious Lucia. Maybe it’s because I was so anxious to read her particular story that I found this book disappointing. I know part of the problem could be because I am intentionally reading the series out of order (I started with Helena’s story, then read Matilda and Phoebe’s books) but I felt like this book started in the middle. I didn’t feel like there was a very good introduction to either of the characters, particularly our Hero.
That said I did enjoy this book, both Hero & Heroine were interesting and their love story was sweet. It’s a nice addition to the series, I just couldn’t give it all 5 stars because I couldn’t lose the feeling that I missed out on some of the background on some really interesting characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2020As usual Emma has told another girls story and pulled you in to another girls at the same time. I can’t wait for the next book to pick up where the last one ended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2020Another great book to the series! Ms. Lucia has secrets, deep secrets that can get her killed. She is part of the peculiar ladies v
Club. Everyone believes she is the daughter of a famous courtesan and has offered her exorbitant amount of money that she has turned everyone down. Silas, Lord Cavendish is new to his title after his estranged father dies. He is sloppy, messy and not your normal peer. When he spots Lucia at a ball he is captivated by her beauty. When he puts his foot in his mouth he realizes she has secrets.
Lucia has stayed has only revealed her secret once to a man she thought loved her but she promised herself she can not trust anyone not even her friends.
A beautiful story with her secrets finally told and realized she not only can trust her friends but the man she loves!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Lucia is by far the brightest diamond of the season, but isn't being treated that way. Of Portuguese descent, she is rumored to be the daughter of a famous courtesan, when her mother died when she was a child, and her only connection to the courtesan is that she was Lucia's father's mistress when he died.
Silas rarely attends balls, but when his eyes roam the crowd looking to see old friends, his eyes land on the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Having little care for the opinions of the ton, he will not let anything stand in his way of getting to know this young woman.
Lucia is only attending the season to seek revenge. She never plans to marry and trusts no man, not a surprise since she's been offered many less than desirable propositions since the season began, few involving marriage.
Lucia's story will break your heart, as you learn what life has thrown at her, but you will celebrate with her as she finds her first true friends and starts to open her heart. So much in this story to applaud!

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable love scenes and a hero who falls far too quickly and openly.
To be honest, I did not initially plan to read this story because I was not really attracted to the character of “Lucia.” The only reason I ended up reading it anyway is because I am very intrigued by the relationship between Mathilda and the Marquis de Montagu, especially also because the Marquis is my favorite kind of hero, at first glance icy and calculated, but there is undoubtedly so much more to it. Silas (and Nate as well) immediately fell for Lucia and Alice and behaved from the start openly as if they were madly in love and that fascinates me much less than a man who may be equally madly in love, but is not so quick to show his cards, or rather his heart. I am also fascinated by the story behind the resentment Harriet clearly feels for the Earl of St Clair.
Well played by the author to also give us snippets from the other couples throughout all the stories, but on the other hand, it is also a shame that those who would only read the story of Mathilda and the Marquis would have to miss out on a lot of important moments and the actual build-up of their romance this way.
Furthermore, I noticed, when you read several stories in succession, that all the love scenes follow almost identically the same pattern, which does become VERY predictable and unoriginal after the third story.
Finally, it is also totally unnecessary at the end of the story to already publish so much of the next story. An epilogue would be so much better, and if necessary, a short teaser for the next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely as expected
Seeing another peculiar lady get settled was just amazingly beautiful with the secret, and the drama it had all carried with the epilogue to end the story and give a glimpse of the next was just beautifully written. Waiting to read on the the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars This series just keeps getting better
This book is the third in a series that just keeps getting better. The plot is full of emotional passages, plenty of twists and , and some brilliantly crafted surprises. The characters are portrayed beautifully. This is a book that would suit all those who love steamy historical romances with plenty of intrigue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
Book three of the series and still going strong, a likeable couple and an interesting storyline.
A well written novel well worth the read IMHO.
Though I’m so intrigued by Matilda’s story that I’m highly tempted to jump over the next few novels in the series order and read her story next.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
An interesting read, the third in this series sees Lucia looking for vengeance, not love. Sometimes there are other plans afoot. I found it harder to relate to Lucia than to some of the other Peculiar Ladies but the story was well written, with a good plot.
