- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2019Will threatening vilains endanger a long lasting love?
I’m reading this series since its beginning and I might say it is getting better and better.
Mrs Emma V Leech crafts lively, full of humor and fleshy characters tales, once you’re in, you can do nothing than turn page after page.
« She had no intention of catching herself an English husband. She already had one. She’d just… temporarily misplaced him. »
Kitty is such a delight to see evolve, sure she is impulsive and reckless but she stands for those she cares for.
For years, she has waited to see again her childhood sweetheart and now she has found him again, she won’t let blackmailers have their way.
Luke is a kind and caring man on the quiet side, he is not dauntless like Kitty, as she has boldness for two. And he would do anything for her even sacrifice his happiness to ensure she is left safe.
What I love about this series, it is a love story but also a tribute to friendship, how persons come to care for others and make their mission to ensure they are well and protected.
Sure, the romance is the main plot but in mingles the other girls stories, with insight from some of them or the other party.
Maybe I will be wrong, but I do think Mathilda’s tale will be the last in this series, as she is the one to mother this bunch of unruly women. And despite all her struggles, the shadowy presence of the Marquess of Montagu is still looming over her in spite of his absence from this book.
« Dear Lucia, How I miss you, my dear friend. I feel like the mother hen you once compared me to… and all my chicks are determined to get eaten by foxes! ―Excerpt of a letter from Miss Matilda Hunt to Lady Aashini Cavendish. »
I do loved too Jasper, out of Luke, he was the hero of the day, my heart arched for him. He made a mistake he is unaware about, it destroyed his building romance with Harriet and since he is paying a high prize. Why I am not sure about Harriet, as for the moment she is very much a grudge-holder, as Mrs Leech didn’t let her be voiced, I do wonder about what.
But if she handles the matter as much as the revenge plot of Lucia in book 3, I am game.
And I only have a few more weeks before having my answers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2021Kitty was not very well fleshed out prior to her own book, but I found I liked her and wished she had received more attention. This is my second reading, and I’m guessing I neglected reviewing the first time because of my conflicted response to the hero.
Luke is too much a pawn for my tastes. He isn’t necessarily a martyr resigned to do his duty but rather a victim of manipulation long after his manipulators have real control over him. He comes off weak and easily swayed. He must be bolstered by the strength of others to be daring. I found it hard to believe that in his four years abroad he couldn’t have gotten a letter to Kitty.
But if you suspend disbelief regarding Luke’s inability to communicate with Kitty and his initial inclination to deny his love for her, they make a very sweet and funny couple.
But it is Harriet and Jasper that steal the show. Even Matilda is outshone in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2019Kitty gave her heart and promised to marry her best friend, Luke, at 13. She still won’t give another a chance. Luke is the second in line heir apparent to an all-controlling earl, and he’s been under the control of the Earl’s brother. They have kept him unknown to British society since they came and took him and his widowed mother from the estate they owned next to Kitty’s home. Kitty and Luke had run wild for years before he was taken. He tried writing her, but every letter was intercepted. After years with no friends, and only a controlling angry uncle as his companion, he is to be introduced at a house party and his engagement announced to a young woman he dislikes and who is the daughter of a powerful Duke. The Earl has threatened Katie’s father with penury if Luke looks for Katie, so he quit trying. Suddenly Katie bursts into the room in front of others and he holds his arms out to her. She heard his voice and knew it was him. She also threatened to sue him if he announced his engagement to the other young woman. With the help of the Earl St. Clair and his mother, Katie and Luke see each other and talk. She talks him into marrying her, since both men before him are near to death. They would live in his old crumbling estate in Ireland until his uncles both passed.
St. Clair determines Luke and Katie must elope if they want their “happily ever after,” and he and his mother arrange the situation for them. His cousin tells him he must go grab happiness for all the members of the family who’ve been controlled all their lives.
As with all these books, there are twists and turns, but always a happy ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2023The premise was trite and the HEA was predictable. I wasn’t connected to either lead character. The hero was dull and cowardly. The heroine was flighty. It was a definite let down after the previous book. This was just a set up for Harriet’s book, which I am looking forward to.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2021Separated when they were only eleven and thirteen years old, Kitty and Luke haven't seen each other for years, after Luke just disappeared. They loved each other as children and neither understood what had happened. Like just knew he'd been taken somewhere far from home and had been allowed no connection to his past.
Just imagine being pulled away from your best friend and confidant, even your young love. Its a fantastic way to begin a novel that will draw you in and not let you go until the tale is fully told!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022This is my second time reading this series, which I enjoy overall. This, however is one of my least favorite stories. While I truly enjoy Kitty's character, I never warm up to Luke's. He comes across as a negative person who is unwilling to take control of his life. The author does a good job of explaining why he is easily controlled, but I never developed a rapport with him. Still a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
Book 4 in the series, a well written novel with a fun storyline though a little angst in places.
A nice interweaving of characters known from the previous books.
Looking forward to more in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enduring young love
This was a sweet chapter in the wallflowers' love stories. But nicely done and ultimately Luke is very much the hero for his Kitty. Childhood sweethearts had to feature and Luke & Kitty were ideal candidates.
Loved following their story to conclusion but as always the stories of the side characters need to be given attention. Matilda continues with hers - but no Montague so will there be a twist to her story. I will have to carry on reading to find out.
But meanwhile Harriet and St Clair are set up for the next chapter.
I find this link between characters a compelling part of the read.
But it's such a nice way to start the morning and end the day, reading a chapter or two of love & happiness prevailing.
On to the next book.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Ticks all the boxes!! ✅
Kitty is such a vivacious and colorful character. I love her spark and her sheer joy in living. Luke is utterly besotted with her. On a morbid note though, his character seems prone to despair and hopelessness. If heaven forbid something ever happened to Kitty I don't think the man would be able to go on at all...if ever there was a man to die of heartbreak it's him. But it's so terribly romantic for a man to be so utterly devoted to a single woman. We should all be so lucky to find such a rare gem of a man. #goals!! This story is filled with adventure, drama and lots of steam.

2.0 out of 5 stars This novel is not a real stand-alone as there is a confusing amount of characters if ...
...you have not read the preceding three books.
There are a lot of characters called by title, name and nicknames and as I have not read the preceding books in this series I often got confused.
I don't like weak characters as a leading couple. In this novel both are not convincing: He is still in love with her but too intimidated (aged 23) by his tutor to put his foot down and avoid an engagement to an unknown lady, she insists on the marriage vows they exchanged as children to be valid. Foolish behaviour by the young people and presumptuous by the tutor didn't warm me to the plot.
At the beginning of each chapter you'll find quotes of letters each time a different sender and receiver, quite confusing.
The bad editing in regard to spelling, grammar, and misplaced words was another reason I stopped reading.
