She thinks her life has changed for the better, her dark secrets hidden, but little does she know…

The daughter of a wealthy landowner in Yorkshire, England in 1864, Anna Thornton leads a privileged life. But she is not content. She wants her life to mean something and longs to be accepted for the free-thinking, independent woman she is. When the dashing, adventurer Matt Cowan sweeps her off her feet, she thinks she has finally met her soul mate. However, he’s not the man she thinks he is. After he sails for South America, leaving her behind in England, Anna discovers she’s pregnant. Heartbroken she flees her family home, determined to keep her child’s illegitimacy a secret.

He has a few dark secrets of his own…

Brenton O’Mara is a strong, independent man who wants to make his own way without relying on his father’s wealth. He comes to Anna’s new home looking for work and convinces the reluctant woman to hire him. But Anna's wary of men, of love, and treats him as nothing more than the penniless labourer she believes him to be. Then, just when Anna seems to feel she is getting on with her new life, and Brenton believes he is breaking down her barriers, the past rears up to confront them and their future hangs in the balance.

"Poignant, powerful and searingly emotional, AnneMarie Brear stands shoulder to shoulder with the finest works by some of the genre’s greatest writers such as Catherine Cookson, Audrey Howard and Rosamunde Pilcher." Amazon reviewer.

Author of over thirty-five novels, AnneMarie Brear has crafted sweeping historical fiction with atmosphere, emotion, and drama aplenty that will surely satisfy any fan of the genre. AnneMarie was born in a small town in N.S.W. Australia, to English parents from Yorkshire, and is the youngest of five children. From an early age she loved reading, working her way through the Enid Blyton stories, before moving onto Catherine Cookson’s novels as a teenager.

Living in England during the 1980s and more recently, AnneMarie developed a love of history from visiting grand old English houses and this grew into a fascination with what may have happened behind their walls over their long existence. Her enjoyment of visiting old country estates and castles when travelling and, her interest in genealogy and researching her family tree, has been put to good use, providing backgrounds and names for her historical novels which are mainly set in Yorkshire or Australia between Victorian times and WWII.

A long and winding road to publication led to her first novel being published in 2006.

She has now published over thirty-five historical family saga novels, becoming an Amazon best seller and with her novel, The Slum Angel, winning a gold medal at the USA Reader's Favourite International Awards. Two of her books have been nominated for the Romance Writer’s Australia Ruby Award and the USA In’dtale Magazine Rone award and recently she has been nominated twice as a finalist for the UK RNA RONA Awards.

I've become a fan of Annemarie Brear's books. They are great reads for historical fiction fans, and this one is no exception. Like many of her stories (if not all), the book features a strong female character, together with others along the way, who band together to survive and succeed in a society that condemned them to failure. It's a light read with an important message--that problems are not nearly as important as how you deal with them. Attitude makes the greatest difference of all!

Anna Thornton's upper class life means little; she wants to be valued for her mind in a time, 1864, when women were merely pawns for marriage. When a handsome adventurer seduces then leaves her, she's left devastated with an illegitimate pregnancy. Now disgraced, will she ever accept true love, even when her heart is tempted by the mysterious Brenton O'Mara?
Ms. Brear's writing is lyrical with vivid descriptions of geography and people's emotions. Her characters are believable and will have you entranced, reaching for that hankie, and knowing they deserve a happy ending.

I really enjoyed this book, living in York, born and raised on a farm several miles away, even many years after the period this book was written, I can recall working really long days, nothing has really changed in some respects to farming life.

I have admired, and I have enjoyed what I have read of this author. It is my kind of book to read. Unfortunately, now I am starting to read the same kind of things in each book. Rich family has a daughter, who has left under bad circumstances, no money now. Then good things happen to her. She buys a rundown farm, and get's it up and running to what it was before.. That is why I have it a four star rating. When I started reading the first few chapters, I thought it was a book I had read before.
