4.7 out of 5 stars 1,598 ratings

Girls who dare – Inside every wallflower is the beating heart of a lioness, a passionate individual willing to risk all for their dream, if only they can find the courage to begin. When these overlooked girls make a pact to change their lives, anything can happen.
Twelve girls – Twelve dares in a hat. Who will dare to risk it all?

To Hunt the Hunter

A doomed love affair…
Matilda Hunt knows what the Marquess of Montagu wants. He has made no secret of the fact that he desires her and wants her for his mistress. Despite the growing strength of the attraction between them, Matilda has fought to keep him at a distance, fought to deny what is becoming increasingly inevitable. As her last hope for a respectable future is taken from her, a future of security, love and family, it seems the man who ruined her offers Matilda the only chance to find some measure of happiness, no matter how fleeting.

A dangerous man …
Yet as her determination to keep her honour intact wavers, she is drawn deeper into Montagu’s world and discovers a man with secrets, a man who is not all she had supposed him to be. That world is tangled with lies and deception and is more dangerous than she could have believed, and not only to her heart.

A dare she cannot refuse …
To have all that she wants, Matilda must dare to risk it all for love and hunt out the truth of the man she cannot bring herself to walk away from. As more and more people warn her the marquess is ruthless and cruel, Matilda wonders if she truly is a fool not to believe it. Angel, devil… or a little bit of both.

Dark and foreboding Marguess of Montagu and vibrant and beautiful "older" Matilda -- who doesn't love the grumpy formidable male to the beautiful kind but strong female storyline? I know I do and anticipated reading this book for the last "Girl Who Dares Series" lead character. Lucian has been appearing in Matilda's path throughout the Series creating angst and interest for the reader. Finally they have their own story and it was worth the wait. Although I do have to say Lucian's honorable and loyal commitment to the family line almost drives the reader crazy -- he's still a passionate and sensual male character and comes through at the end. Lucky Matilda!

Is there a future together written somewhere in time for them ...

Wow I am finally back among the living, I shut myself from any social life outside work for this book. My patients might have found me quite distracted today.
And even if it is not the last book in the series as one more will come out next month, and I am happy to have been right about the heroine-to-be. This book is for any fan of the series from the very beginning the one very awaited story, when Matilda and Montagu love-hate relationship finds its right closure.
And what a read it was, I spent my day between a fan and a box of tissues, oscillating between them at every turn of page.
I let the story flow through me, following Mrs Leech ‘s lead, and she did not disappoint.
Oh my, I love Lucian and it is to say a long way change from the first book in the series, when I longed to see him smashed under a carriage’s wheels. I even cursed his shrewd name for quite a time.
But here, I even wonder if he is not the most romantic hero out of the eleven couples brought together along the pages of the series.
Oh my, how he made me cry, he is a fierce lover and a ferocious parent and while bitterness took hold for a time of his heart, he was set free by Phoebe and Matilda’s love.
And Matilda, she is just Matildanesque, the mother hen from the whole series and a savage friend, once one’s becomes her friend, she gets her claws out when they are threatened. She never back down, she protects and defends furiously.

So stock your Kleenex and have a fan close to hand, as tears will compete with scorching and intense moments.

If you haven’t read the whole series, there is a book compiling Matilda and Montagu whole story, 𝑀𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑎 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑢 : 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑠𝑜 𝐹𝑎𝑟
So you can jump straight to their romance.
But to fully appreciate the fun of this series, I can only recommend to read it from the very beginning.

A 10 stars read, and now 6 weeks for the last in this series before the sequel to come soon I hope.

This is my second reading - this time in rapid fire sequence rather than waiting for each book to publish. I enjoyed it more the second go round, though I will never completely embrace Montagu. His reasons for not being “able” to marry Matilda were all about HER suitability - a false scandal and her brother’s gaming hall (something her brother frustratingly forgets when he is blaming Montagu for all Matilda’s woes). That, along with Matilda basically excusing Montagu’s capitulation to duty, was a let down, especially given her previous strength of character and pride. Montagu held so much power, it never made any sense that he would be so weighed down by the opinion of the ton, most of whom he could crush with little effort. And what a hypocrite when he had an illegitimate niece that he dared the ton to hurt.

The other problem with a story that revolves around a hero resigned to marry a woman he will never love nor respect is that it offends my immutable belief that women need to stick together. Thankfully, Matilda addresses this flaw in Montagu’s plan advising him he needed to find someone suitable who could also make him happy as it would not be fair to his future wife or children if he didn’t. It’s one thing to have a marriage fall apart, quite another to enter it already despising, or worse, being indifferent to your spouse.

This was a series about strong women and the men who loved and supported them, but this crowning jewel in the series seemed to mock that theme even as Montagu totally humiliated the young woman who expected to get a marriage proposal from him. Yes, she once snubbed Matilda, but she didn’t make the rules either, and it was a rather innocuous event in the story, really. She was basically a girl who was as much a pawn of the aristocracy as Montagu was. I found it odd that she was invited to the ball given what Montagu intended. It seemed unnecessarily cruel and did not endear him to me, as if I needed another reason to dislike him.

All that said, Matilda and Montagu were a blazing hot couple. They were obviously in love - a love for the ages. And Phoebe and Pippin were a breath of fresh air. Even Flash Jack was a gem. And you will sympathize with Montagu for the hell his uncle put him through, yet in the end his uncle has nothing to do with why Montagu “can’t” marry Matilda. They are really two separate plot arcs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most awaited book ever and it did not disappoint!
Reviewed in India on December 11, 2021
Montagu and Matilda's story is the most E. P. I. C. historical love story I have ever read. For the past ten books in the series we have had tantalizing glimpses of each and every encounter they had. There is indeed a very thin line between love and hate. Watching the hate and enmity between them slowly transform into everlasting love and devotion was truly satisfying. Fraught with angst, drama, action and sheet-melting steam, these star-crossed lovers have dared to defy society and it's expectations against all odds and they now have a bright future to look forward to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!!
Reviewed in the Netherlands on March 10, 2025
I admit that my expectations were very high for this story, because it was the couple that I felt very attracted to from the very first story. All expectations were more than fulfilled. I laughed, cried, cursed... Some parts were so devastating, the injustice of the whole situation, the feeling of being so utterly torn...pulled at my heart strings.
This story was fiction and the idea that these two people who loved each other so much, were not allowed to marry because of those idiotic society rules, was already heartbreaking. Even more heartbreaking is the knowledge that for countless real people, this has been the harsh reality, and for some unfortunately still is. Prue's book, "The Eagle and the Lamb" was a brilliant idea.
My assumptions about Uncle Theo turned out to be correct, although he was even much more evil than I assumed.
The epilogue was fantastic and I did miss one in the other stories.
I will miss these wonderful characters and there is a big chance that I will soon focus on the "Daring Dauthers", haha.
This story was truly the icing on the cake and more than worth the wait!

2.0 out of 5 stars A surfeit of pathos and erotica
Reviewed in Italy on August 19, 2020
I have often appreciated this author’s lively stories and characters, but find this closing epic of thwarted passion just TOO...everything: long, repetitive, predictable, cloying. The happy ending is an anti-climax after all the steamy if incomplete sexual encounters.
