4.3 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

The final chapter of the Dreadbound Ode...

Lyssa is going to the Dead Place and everyone she killed will be waiting.

As the Hidden One’s twisted plan to resurrect the Deep Gods unfolds, the only way to stop him is a secret buried in the land of death.

But Lyssa has not given up. If the Deep Gods can return, so can she.

Can Lyssa find a way back? Can she delve into hell’s darkest corners and emerge with the lore to stop the Deep Gods’ rise? Or will she become a lost soul, like so many of those she loved in life?

Ancient horrors will wake. Skalds will sing. And a blind seer will see the shadows gather.

Lyssa Pedersten has tasted poison, and hell had best beware.

Praise for the Dreadbound Ode...

"Rich in detail, bringing his tale to life with a foreboding atmosphere and characters that are intense. Good dialogue, rapid-fire action scenes, explosive magic and wicked political machinations." -Tome Tender

"This is extremely well-written grimdark and if you like your fantasy and sci-fi gritty...this is a book you should pick up." -Booknest

"The Weeping Sigil never stops. It has a relentless forward motion. It's painful, and its glorious, and there are twists and turns that I never saw coming. It made my heart pound and yes, there was even a tear or two." - Sarah Chorn, author of Seraphina's Lament

"Perfect for grimdark fans." -Grimdark Magazine

"[The Weeping Sigil] took everything that I had loved from The Skald’s Black Verse and lifted it to a whole other level, and I for one can’t wait to see what Jordan Loyal Short will do next. This is a fantastic book, great for anyone who enjoys a delectable mix of fantasy and science fiction, with a good dash of grimdark." - Beneath a Thousand Skies

"I love the cultures, the magic system, the spaceships and the interplanetary communication. There's lots of action and peril. It’s a great book! I’d very much recommend it." - Lee Conley, author of the Dead Sagas

Enthralled and engaged is what I was through this entire series. The total immersion kept me up late every night. Gods, monsters, afterlife, politics, religion and real character development had me like no writing since LOTR which I first read over forty years ago. Please continue your great work!

The wait is over, and the author brings his characters to a conclusion with all the tragedy and action we expect from the first two. Definitely an author to watch.

Really enjoyed the entire trilogy. Glad to see a complete story arc in contrast to some of the more well known fantasy author's inability to finish a series.

This is a decent end to the trilogy and pretty much all of the main plot points got tied up for us. I was a huge fan of the second book that honestly just did not enjoy this one as much.

Well there were a lot of great parts including a storyline with some little girls and a severed head that I loved, I had a bit of a hard time getting through this one due to formatting and editing on the ebook. I also just never became a fan of Lyssa's storyline or her.

To end on a good note, I definitely did like the author's descriptions of the underworld and it's denizens. Like I said, there a lot of really good things in this book in the series in general and I definitely recommend it for Dark Fantasy fans

I was gifted an audiobook code by the author in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.

Travels in the Dark is the epic conclusion to The Dreadbound Ode, a dark and sometimes horrific fantasy series, also containing many science fiction elements and some Norse mythology. The narration by Aaron Smith is once again excellent, drawing you into the story with some fantastic voice acting.

If you enjoy the darker side of fantasy this series is for you. This final novel is bloodthirsty and violent, and completes the series satisfactorily, but is not for the faint-hearted.

Book 2 opened up the scope of the story taking the characters from the first book into space from their home planet of Heimir, where their horizons were widened significantly. A large portion of Travels in the Dark takes its characters still further beyond Heimir, being set in the Dead Place. The story arcs of the three main characters, Lyssa who had been a barmaid in the first book, is now dead and making her way through the Dead Place, trying to return to life, the Skald, Brohr, hopelessly in love with Lyssa, is determined to save her from the Dead Place, and Henrik who is no longer a slave but now seen as a prophet of Tyrus, The Shining One, a kind of cult leader seen as a god.

There are new horrors in this book, particularly the deep god, The Candle Maker. The author clearly has an amazing, twisted (in a good way!) imagination and it comes to the fore in the creation of this monster:

“The Candle Maker was a terrifying pyromaniac”

A deep god of unbelievable power and terrible to behold, when the Candle Maker comes into the story, in Henrik’s story arc, all Hell is let loose. Called up from the Dead Place by Moriiigo, this demon razes the city to the ground and causes unimaginable devastation while consuming human sacrifices made to it with its magical fire.

Lyssa believes that if the Deep Gods can rise from the Dead Place she must also be able to return. Lyssa is still my favourite character in this trilogy, her determination and refusal to give up drives her on through all manner of evils she encounters in the Dead Place. My favourite part of the novel was Lyssa in the endless corridors of Hell, each door containing an inhabitant enduring their own personal Hell. Lyssa has to decide whether or not to enter a room on the corridor, driven by an untrustworthy witch’s advice. If she enters who will she find within? She remembers a well-known saying:

“Beware of the winking old man who lurks in the deep dark corners of Hell”.

The excellent worldbuilding is aided by the inclusion of quotes and proverbs from the history and mythology of the world at the beginning of each chapter.

If you like well-written and imaginative dark fantasy and are intrigued by the unusual combination of science fiction and fantasy you will thoroughly enjoy this trilogy!
