Note: While part of a series, the way Brashear has written these this absolutely stands on its own and could be listened to out of order. While Declan makes a small appearance in Try Easy (book 1) and Keoni appears briefly in this one – there are no spoilers in either direction and events occur somewhat concurrently. Oh my gosh – I loved this. From their meeting Declan & Pearl were perfect for each other. They’re both really interesting characters. Declan is the “bad boy” of surfing who isn’t as bad as the media and his manager make him out to be. A recovering alcoholic struggling with his success in a sport that took the life of a good friend. Pearl is trying to succeed in a male-dominated sport as well as live up to the legend of her mother. While their love of surfing brings them together and they have amazing chemistry – the fact that they each get to really know the other is what made this so enjoyable to me. There’s a little forced proximity (one of my favorite tropes) when they’re stranded together for a few days. It’s more than the weather that steams up! When they return, they struggle to find how they fit together in “the real world”. This had all the emotions. I again enjoyed Brashear’s descriptions of Hawaii and surfing. I felt fully immersed in the sport that I’m not that familiar with. Narration: I thought Kai Rubio and Emily Woo Zeller were the perfect fit for Declan and Pearl. Both did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life. Flawless narration that made this so easy to listen to. I received a free copy of this audiobook from Home Cooked Books and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This book is captivating and drew me in immediately. Declan and Pearl have interesting, complicated stories that makes it all the more powerful when they connect. Brashear artfully illustrates the strength and vulnerability in all of us. She shows how love makes us stronger. You’ll finish this book with an appreciation for the surf scene in CA and Hawaii in the 60s. You’ll also appreciate when Declan and Pearl light it up. Hot, hot, hot! Definitely read this book!

(audiobook+ebook) With this book, surfing is finally at the center of the story, and though I know nothing about this sport, it was quite endearing. Mostly because both characters practice, and they aren’t competing against each other.

It was actually the main reason why Peal and Declan got acquainted. They admired each other’s technique. They even worked together. And they supported each other, as they both struggled with their art. Declan had fled Hawaii after his friend’s death–and his affair with the deceased’s ex-girlfriend–and dreaded coming back to the islands for a competition right where his Eddie had died. Daughter of a famous female surfer, Pearl wanted to have the same influence on girls and women–a nice feminist message–but needed Declan’s fame to get some coverage. They needed each other, but more than that, they connected with each other–shared a passion for surfing and a love for Hawaii.

I loved how the attraction was like a by-product of their admiration for each other. Like they desired the body that could make such beautiful and powerful figures on the waves. The feelings they developped came from them learning more about each other, from discovering the person behind the athlete. I thought they had quite a mature relationship, and the petty drama came from outside, from the villain in the story, Declan’s ruthless agent.

I won’t say much about it, because it’s better to read it, but the third act was a thing of beauty. All the fears and struggles and hang-ups were resolved in a few chapters taking place during the Duke Kahanamoku contest. Fun and full of emotions, I really enjoyed that ending.

I wasn’t a fan of the male narrator. He did the job, but I couldn’t connect with Declan through his voice. The female narrator, though, was great. Between the way she conveyed Pearl’s feelings and her little lilt for her, I loved her work here.

Book 2 of the aloha series. It's the story of Declan and Pearl. It's sexy and fun. Continued describtions of surfing and Hawaii. Declan is a world class surfer. He lost one of his best friends to surfing. Pearl is a born surfer, a Hawaiian whose mother was a surfer too but because of the times women aren't accepting in the sport yet. Follow their journey as they fall in love.

This book wasn't too bad. I liked the idea of the story but, it just didn't pull me in. I found some of it to just drag on and on. I liked Declan and Pearl but, I think the story was just lacking something.

It wasn't a bad story, just didn't have what I was looking for.

Couldn't wait for Book 2 in the Aloha Series but it was worth the wait! Loved it. At home quarantined but felt like I was in Hawaii with the sun, sand and love! Of course, I was totally attracted to Declan but also in love with Pearl. Their relationship pulls you in. Read this today!

While not full blown erotica, there's definitely a lot of steamy scenes here, prompted by a fierce physical attraction and shared love of surfing. There's a bit of other character development, but the overriding vibe is surf and sex, not necessarily in that order.

Overall, a relatively clean edit with some lingering typos. A lovely diversion without much thought required to enjoy the text, and envision yourself on a warm, sunny beach. An example of the writing:

"Pearl was lying so close that she could see every one of his flaws. He had tiny scars from the car crash that could only be seen at close range. The scars didn’t bother him. They served as a constant reminder of the mistakes he didn’t care to repeat."

This is the second book I’ve read by Jill. I found it entertaining and enjoyed making a connection between the character development from the previous book, “Try Easy”. I knocked it out within a day thanks to a flight back from coincidentally Maui. Great fun and spicy read, definitely recommend for something fun and lighthearted.

I loved this so much because Jill Brashear captured the island and family life so well! It was so relatable. The main character reminds me of so many of the women in my family. I really hope to read more books where the main characters are of pacific background. The surfing, the lingo, people and culture just made me miss my family so much! This will definitely be a favourite for me and also a re-read. Thank you Jill! Please write more characters like this! :)
