The Straits of Tsushima: An action-packed historical military adventure (Marcus Baxter Naval Thrillers Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 338 ratings

A new naval adventure series you don’t want to miss! For fans of Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian, Chris Durbin, Douglas Reeman and Antoine Vanner.

Who can you trust when nothing is as it seems…?

1904

The Russo-Japanese War has been raging for almost a year.

When blacklisted former Royal Navy officer
Marcus Baxter is offered the chance to spy on a Russian ship passing through the North Sea, he jumps at the chance to regain his commission.

Accompanied by young Tommy Dunbar, desperate to earn his sea legs, Baxter is betrayed by the crew and captured by a Russian cruiser, the
Yaroslavich, where both he and Tommy are held captive in an attempt to avoid escalating tension with Britain.

As the journey unfolds, Baxter discovers that not all of the crewmembers are who they claim to be – including Russian aristocrats, revolutionary Marxists and mutineers – and with a traitor in their midst, can anyone be trusted?

Braving typhoons, treacherous seas and would-be assassins, Baxter finds himself fighting alongside his new Russian comrades in the Battle of Tsushima, commanding one of the gun batteries and helping to fight off Japanese torpedo boats.

But with the
Yaroslavich hit and going down, will any of them survive?

THE STRAITS OF TSUSHIMA is the first book in the Marcus Baxter naval thriller series: action-packed, authentic historical adventures following former Royal Navy officer Marcus Baxter during the early 1900s.

THE MARCUS BAXTER NAVAL THRILLER SERIES:
BOOK ONE: The Straits of Tsushima
BOOK TWO: Mutiny on the Potemkin
BOOK THREE: The War For Tripoli
BOOK FOUR: The Guns of Zanzibar
BOOK FIVE: Vengeance at the Falklands

About the Author

Jonathan Johns is something of a rarity, being a Cornish audiobook narrator. His unique voice, found within his Cornish heritage, goes a long way in bringing stories to life. Fully adept in character dialogue, voices, and narration, Jonathan has the ability to draw in the listener.

Tim Chant grew up (mostly), went to school in East Anglia and university in Scotland. He took his history degree and did the only thing he could with it-joined the civil service. When not shackled to his desk he writes science fiction, alternative historical fiction, historical fiction, and any other fiction that takes his fancy. When not doing that, he's an inveterate roleplayer and wargamer (and getting back into historical fencing). He lives in Edinburgh with his partner and their two rabbits. The Straits of Tsushima, book one of the Marcus Baxter adventures, is his first historical fiction novel. As T Q Chant, he also writes science fiction, steampunk, and speculative fiction.

Since it was inexpensive, didn’t expect much, but happy to recommend it - good characterisation and interested me to check maps and read a bit more about the history of this battle. Have ordered the second book with high hopes.

I bought the book accidentally. I didn't mean to buy it but I thoroughly enjoyed it. After a slightly confusing start the plot and the characters straightened out. Interesting plot and people. I look forward to the next book.

Very overwritten and very much in need of a copy editor. There are dreadful misspellings and awkward transitions in the course of the action.

I found it interesting having read in other books various mentions of the Russian\Japanese war. This provided a great deal more information and content.

Set against the backdrop of the largely forgotten Russo-Japanese War and using that war's most significant battle, the battle of Tsushima Straits as its climactic point, the book combines elements of espionage, a murder mystery, and naval warfare into an interesting and entertaining yarn. The novel captures the problems that plagued Russia's Baltic Fleet as it sailed from its base in the Baltic Sea around Cape Horn and ultimately to its destruction in the Sea of Japan. The battle itself influenced Japanese naval strategy and foreign policy for the next forty years and in the eyes of some historians led to miscalculations that resulted in Japan's attack on the United States and the UK in 1941.

As a historical novel the book is interesting, but at times strains credulity and disappoints. Ekatarina's presence on a Russian warship heading into battle in 1905 is given no really plausible explanation. Hints about her possible role on the ship are less than satisfying and never fully developed as is the nature of her relationship with her cuckolded husband who is aware of what is occurring between his wife and his friend. To some extent the same can be said for the British agent. Only a perfunctory explanation is provided for why he went rogue and it is unclear what he hoped to accomplish with Baxter's presence on the Russian warship. And, like a Saturday serial, at the end of the book new questions are raised that presumably will be answered in the next book which may also flesh out answers to some of the questions not already fully answered in this one.

All of that said, on the whole the plot sweeps across thousands of miles and contains twists and turns that keep the story interesting and move it to the climactic battle between an ill trained Russian fleet by now badly in need of maintenance and a highly trained Japanese fleet that used the latest advances in communications and gunnery technology, some of the latter provided by the Royal Navy, to score a crushing victory. It's definitely worth a read.

Some geographic inconsistencies, but, good character development and great action and place descriptions. Enjoyed the main character and his escapades. Look forward to the sequel .

Having read Tim Chant's sci-fi work I had high expectations of this and I wasn't disappointed. The author has created a plausible (but fun) cast of characters and set them against a well researched and rich world of early 20th century Naval conflict. If you are a fan of Naval fiction then you should absolutely be reading this. If you are a fan of espionage thrillers you should be reading this. Frankly if you enjoy any kind of historical fiction you should be reading this and ordering the sequel with great anticipation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needed some geography research

I thought the story itself was well written and will buy the sequel. The battle scenes were good and I thought the difficulties that the Russian Fleet actually faced were well covered. The only thing that really bothered me as a Master Mariner was the fact that the author sent the 2nd Pacific Squadron across the Pacific when in fact they went across the Indian Ocean after rounding the Cape of Good Hope - which at some point was referred to as The Horn.

A well researched, action packed adventure that captures a relatively little known but important historical event.
I look forward to seeing where Marcus Baxter ends up next
