- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2019This is a gripping book that makes history exciting. It’s so different from an ordinary history book, or historical fiction read. The research, which is usually a dry and dull topic, is blended in. The author does it in a way that makes the reader understand why the topics were investigated, and it brings a new level of understanding to the story. I love the way she explains how the creative mind develops an idea, and completes the plot for a work of fiction. It's as if she has allowed us to peek into her writing diary.
From there the journey takes us to a fictional narrative of Anne Boleyn and some of the characters of the Henrican Court. It's an ensemble piece with all the characters allowing us to understand their actions during the dramatic fall of a queen. Her portrayal of Jane Seymour is riveting. Also, Ms Jones made me see Henry VIII from a new perspective.
Refreshing, experimental and provocative. This is a well-written, researched and thought provoking read. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2020I am an educated woman, and to see so many grammatical errors, errors in editing, and mis-used words pains me because the errors kept drawing my attention from the actual story. As far as the subject matter, to move from the titles subject matter to the plain focus on the death of Anne to the rise of Jane was awkwardly done . I finish what I start hoping for a good finish, but this book gave nothing of interest and little new information, if any. It definitely needs re-edited and re-worked to make it flow better.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2020I read a lot. My husband is always saying—“let me guess another book about the queen”I think this book has great bones. This book was interesting in how it was divided into a star map. However, honestly it took me to about the 9th house through the book to understand what was going on. Which of course is when I looked up the zodiac to figure out. I didn’t understand the list of important dates or how they were organized at first in the middle of the book and how it related to the concept. It unfortunately jumps around but once I figured out she was trying to do it like a reading it made more sense, or at least that’s what I think was the plan. Again great concept, it needs to be polished and developed more, unfortunately many typos—editor really should have caught for her, but the excerpts of fictional history of her own inspiration kept my attention. I think description of book should be rewritten to explain the concept and it would be more fun for the reader especially if they are not an astrology buff. Otherwise it appears disjointed and may stop many readers from sticking through to the end. thank you for an interesting twist. This could have been developed into a series of books taking each house as a concept and really enriching it. Thank you for the opportunity to read your book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019History isn't my thing, but I love reading Hunter's books. This book is perfect for anyone looking for something different about the Tudors. There are short articles about astrology and magic, a dateline for references and it ends with a short fictional story about Anne Boleyn. All in all, captivating and compelling, and it's written in an easy to read style.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020I gave up reading about 2/3 through the book. It was so poorly written that I just couldn't finish it. There were entire sections that were repeated from one chapter to another and exposition that was just factually incorrect. The entire book seemed like a jumble of incoherent thought.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019Magic & mystery is a fresh look at an ongoing obsession with Tudor England. There are historical articles, a quick guide to important dates & it ends with an Anne Boleyn short story. Easy to read with something for the novice as well as the person who reads everything, so five stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2019Most of the book is a mash of info from other sources, very little new or interesting. The worst part is that it is the WORST book I have ever read for proof reading! LOTS of misspellings and wrong words (has for his, etc.) I cannot recommend this to anyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2019I’ve always been aware of Anne Boleyn’s story without really knowing much about it. "Magic & Mystery In Tudor England" by Hunter S. Jones, has changed that. Wow! The author has presented an incredibly well researched backdrop and then added so much excitement and drama to the story that I never wanted the book to end. I hope it happened like this! Jones writes in a colorful style that kept me enthralled. I felt like a mystery hunter across time, investigating clues, exploring theories and imagining myself there five hundred years ago. Loved it!
