Tumbling Dice Kindle Edition
"Hilarious, revealing, shocking and hugely enjoyable account of the wild, weird world of celebrity and even wilder, weirder world of tabloid journalism." -
Piers Morgan, TV presenter, journalist and former Editor, News of the World, Daily Mirror, mailonline, Mail on Sunday
"LAJ has always shone her light brilliantly, if sometimes too accurately, on others. She now turns it articulately and entertainingly onto herself - a scoop!" -
Sir Tim Rice, author & Academy Award-winning lyricist, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Evita’, ‘Chess’, ‘The Lion King’
"Brilliant, unputdownable, a tour de force. The best book about celebrities that I have ever read. I wish I’d written it." -
Simon Napier-Bell, rock manager, the Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, Wham!, Sinead O’Connor, George Michael
"Lesley-Ann was both the glamour and the guts of rock journalism. No one got closer to the story, nor nearer to the core of a crazy time. She was there and she was all there." -
Robert Elms, broadcaster, BBC Radio London
"Boy oh boy, Tumbling Dice is sensational! The stories are amazing and the storyteller, Lesley-Ann Jones, brings such intelligence, self-knowledge and honesty to a life recollected, that by the second page of the introduction, I was hooked."
Matthew Parris, The Times columnist, broadcaster and former politician
"It was almost impossible to be at a gig, party, reception or other rock-related shindig from the late ’70s, ’80s and beyond without seeing Lesley-Ann. She was everywhere, and seemed to know everyone, from rock stars to hotel doormen." -
Martin Townsend, former Editor, Sunday Express
"In the world of celebrity journalism, Lesley-Ann Jones can confidently claim to be an A-lister herself, with a reputation and a glamour to match many of the stars she’s encountered. She’s shared their fast jets, luxurious hotel suites and VIP booths, kept a few of their secrets and spilled a lot of others." -
Sarah Oliver, journalist, Mail on Sunday
"Searing, raw, vivid, compelling! This is as real and as outrageous as memoirs get. Do yourself a favour and read this book: all human life is here." -
Stuart White, former US Editor, News of the World, and best-selling author, 'Death Game' and 'Kiss of the Angel'
"Lesley-Ann Jones has long been regarded as the doyenne of showbiz writing and reporting. No one got closer. No one saw more." -
Mike Parry, broadcaster and former Fleet Street executive
In this startling, funny and agonizing book, Lesley-Ann Jones relives the glory days and walks again on the wild side with tears, laughter and a whole lotta love. LAJ, the acclaimed biographer of Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Marc Bolan, began her career as an intern at London’s Capital Radio, and worked with Debbie Harry and Blondie, Spandau Ballet and Leo Sayer at Chrysalis Records. She experienced 15 minutes of fame as a television presenter at the inception of Channel 4. She subsequently reinvented herself as a reporter and celebrity interviewer on the Sun, the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday and the News of the World. She was directly involved in 3 of the most explosive celebrity scandals of the age: Bill Wyman’s affair with schoolgirl Mandy Smith, Gary Glitter’s exposure as a paedophile, and Hugh Grant’s arrest in Los Angeles following his dalliance with a prostitute.
The Gloria Gaynor of the written word, she survived not only the toughest street on Earth and near-fatal illness but also life-changing divorce, culminating in the killing of her lawyer.
TUMBLING DICE offers, at its heart, the evolving psyche and growing awareness of a green-gilled hack on a quest for exclusives and a thrilling lifestyle, but essentially, of course, for love.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: FREDDIE MERCURY
'MERCURY' goes beyond the glittering facade to get an unvarnished look at Queen's rise to fame, the loves of Mercury's life and his fraught relationship with his conservative past, creating a complete portrait of this magnetic musician. METRO SOURCE, NEW YORK
Truly definitive, truly Freddie, an energetic, entertaining and essential account.
SIR TIM RICE
This book grabs you with its opening, then builds. Insight and anecdote in perfect harmony.
SIMON NAPIER-BELL
The sort of tribute Mercury himself would have wanted … full of perceptive and moving insights.
SPECTATOR
One of the best biographies I have read recently is Lesley-Ann Jones's biography of Freddie Mercury, published to coincide with the 20th anniversary of his death. No-one has captured better the magical, enchanting dualism of Freddie Mercury - the mystery of the battle between dark and light that is at the heart of the Zoroastrian religion of his birth as well as of his own life. To read this book is to rejoice that such a man ever lived and sang, while at the same time to be overwhelmed once more at the grief of his death and what took him from us. The author has the rare gift of being scrupulously honest about the subject, while maintaining throughout a kindliness that reflects truly the ruthless charm at the heart of all he did.
RUTH GLEDHILL, SUNDAY TIMES
HERO: DAVID BOWIE
Published by Hodder & Stoughton September 2016. Voted one of the Top Ten Music Books of 2016 by the London Evening Standard, and also one of their Top Eight Biographies/Memoirs.
Lesley-Ann Jones knew Bowie from childhood. They became friends, and he inspired her to become a music journalist. Her biography is a very personal portrait that explores the real man behind the spaceman, the countless facets of his self- reinvention, the golden years and the wilderness periods, his torments and triumphs, his music, artistry and personal life.
Through several interviews with Bowie she evocatively portrays his fascinating life, often with a tenderness you wouldn’t expect.
DAILY EXPRESS
This is a fascinating insight into one of greatest artists of our lifetime.
EVENING STANDARD
If you knew nothing about Bowie, this is the biography to read. If you thought you knew everything about Bowie, this is even more the biography to read.
SIR TIM RICE
An intriguing book. This is a personal friendship in writing. The knowledge divulged here is an endearing and powerful tale of a man who conquered the entire entertainment industry with his creative force.
HENRY DEAS, VARIETY
RIDE A WHITE SWAN: THE LIVES & DEATH OF MARC BOLAN:
I remember the time I spent with Marc and June in the late ’60s with massive affection.
It was a wonderful, exciting and creative time. Lesley-Ann Jones captures perfectly the spirit of the time, and tells beautifully the wider story of Marc's extraordinary life.
BOB HARRIS OBE
Important missing pieces of the complicated short life that was Marc Bolan's. It is a sensational read... What I especially love is that this new book comes from a woman's point of view. She tells Marc's story in a very nurturing and loving way. I highly recommend it to all Marc Bolan fans.
TONY VISCONTI - RECORD PRODUCER: DAVID BOWIE, MARC BOLAN, MORRISSEY
Brimming with insight from family members, friends, managers, musicians, and white-knuckled rock and rollercoaster riders who shared the dips and dives of Bolanmania, this book is a cracker of a read.
KEITH ALTHAM - ROCK WRITER & PRESS AGENT: THE WHO, THE ROLLING STONES, BEACH BOYS, SMALL FACES, VAN MORRISON & MARC BOLAN.
Lesley-Ann Jones brings my old friend almost back to life in this brilliantly observed and detailed account of a fascinating man who lived an all-too-short life. The first book to show us the real Marc.
STEVE HARLEY - COCKNEY REBEL
A brilliantly documented and beautifully-written account of one of our greatest music legends.
PHIL SWERN - PRODUCER, BBC RADIO 2
IMAGINE:

NODDY HOLDER MBE, ROCK STAR, ACTOR, PRODUCER, PRESENTER
Lesley-Ann Jones has written a first-time classic. She extricates the glam out of every piece of grunge in this rock’n’roll myth-fest. Imagine broke my heart, and rebuilt it again, until it became like a favourite song: repeating over and over in a dreamlike paradise.
LEO SAYER, SINGER SONGWRITER
What a read! This book is funny, frightening, and terrifyingly accurate. It feels like I know everyone in it.
ED BICKNELL, FORMER MANAGER, DIRE STRAITS, MARK KNOPFLER, BRYAN FERRY, GERRY RAFFERTY, & HEAD OF WILLIAM MORRIS ENDEAVOUR EUROPE
An irresistible rock’n’roll cocktail of fact and fiction, expertly mixed. Take one sip and prepare yourself for a ‘lock-in’ …

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2019Lesley-Ann Jones is the foremost British rock journalist and if you read this book you get to ride shotgun with her. She is by turns tough, charming, funny and honest. Her judgment is impeccable. Like her father, the sportswriter Ken Jones, she is a thoroughly decent sort.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019Lesley-Ann's book captured my attention from the front page to the last. I cannot remember when I enjoyed a book so much. She has an amazing writing style! I am so happy Lesley-Ann shared her life's adventures with us.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2019Great read. Also LAJ is great on the Porky Party podcasts.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019Having previously enjoyed Lesley-Ann Jones's book about Freddie Mercury, I was excited to dig in to her memoir. I was absolutely hooked and wide-eyed to read what life was like as a rock/celebrity journalist! I dog-eared so many pages that I either found to be exceptional writing (in my humble opinion), or that seemed to mirror my own personal thoughts/beliefs/life experiences. I love her self-effacing style and little side quips. And like one of the other reviewers here, I felt like I was along for the ride on her amazing assignments and career ups and downs. She definitely has some fascinating stories to tell! I so felt for her during tough times and really admire her devotion to her children and family. I think it takes courage to put yourself out there in a memoir and reveal the most personal details of your life for all to see. Lucky for us, she did - I super enjoyed Tumbling Dice! 😄

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A PARTY, LAJ!
Yeah, I met Lesley-Ann Jones a few years back. It was at some big do in London. I thought it was her birthday or some special LAJ convention - everybody knew her. I mean everybody! How did this extraordinary notoriety among the great, the bad and the very bad in the entertainment industry come about. I guessed there must be some kind of history. What did she have on these people? I didn't have to wait long to find out.
Lesley-Ann Jones is the quintessential fleet street scribe. Actually, she's more than that. She's a wonderful writer, with some revealing tales to tell of the people and friends she has known in a lifetime of journalism. Frank, engaging, in-your-face. Real and evocative. The history of modern entertainment and it's key players, all cut and diced and blended into a colourful showbiz smoothie. It's a big appetising drink for a single life. Most of us would need two to fill these pages. Best consumed in one tasty lip-smacking session.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Inside Story of the - from someone who lived it.
If like me, you grew up listening to the pirate radio stations and Radio one under the bedclothes; if, on a weekly basis, you waited excitedly for the latest copy of NME & Melody Maker to land on the mat and then set about attacking and savouring every article, searching for news of the latest concerts, and even devouring the adverts, you'll love this book. I wanted to understand what made the great musicians of our day tick, what their lives were really like and what was happening behind the scenes. Unfortunately this book wasn't around then but wow, how Lesley-Ann Jones has more than made up for that with her wit, intellect and perhaps most of all her wonderful memories, recollections of mostly and perhaps most of all her wonderful stories which bring this book to life in a joyful and sometimes challenging way.
Thanks for writing this Lesley-Ann - its truly enriched my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book ha A Fatal Flaw...
Well, I don;t read much. My wife on The other hand can read a novel in a day. I could fire a gun beside her ear and she wouldn;t notice. A committed bookworm I am not. Nonetheless in the last year I have managed to read TWO books by Lesley-Ann Jones - Bohemian Rhapsody, and this. She takes me from meetings in dingey but charismatic Soho pubs, to the parlours of superstars, and gives me intimate introductions to a host of household names. They seem To attract each other like magnets, and though these encounters are mostly in a professional context, the whole process comes across as second nature. It teeters consistently on the edge of providing "too much information" which makes for absolutely compelling reading. How can anyone cut like a laser as she does, whilst persuading the reader that butter would;t melt in her mouth? Don;t ask me, but she does it. Tumbling Dice is quite the rollercoaster, riding me past the scene of an assassination in Chelsea, straight to a fountain in Rome, and buying an ice cream for a Megastar gone AWOL for a moment. The trouble is, the damn book ends, And that for me, is its fatal flaw!
