Twist of the Thread (The Lancashire Cotton Saga Book 2) Kindle Edition
Three women carve out their own paths in a time of great change…
1865, Lancashire, England
With the American Civil War coming to an end, cotton supplies will soon arrive in Gorbydale once again. In the aftermath of the conflict, three women must find their place in a changing world.
Jessie Overdale — now married to Robert, heir to the Invincible Mill — is expecting her first child and living under the watchful eye of her overbearing in-laws.
Jessie’s old friend, Honora Darwen, is studying in New York to become a doctor and is determined to triumph over the contempt of her male tutors and peers.
Dolly Tate — the Overdales’ reluctant maid — longs to build a better life for herself and her young son, Albert. And when a shadowy figure from her past returns to Gorbydale, she believes she may have found a way out of servitude…
Will the end of the war bring new opportunities to Gorbydale? Will the town’s cotton mills thrive once more?
And will the three women succeed in their callings…?

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2020This is a compelling second book in the series THE LANCASHIRE COTTON SAGA. When I received review copies of this and the first book in the series, I was expecting yet another sappy period romance. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself reading both books straight through in just two days!
Book 2 takes up where Book 1 leaves off, and the characters waste no time in pulling the reader back into their stories. The folks in the book became almost friends to me as I watched/participated in their growth and development. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that the book moves rapidly and delivers excitement for political/historical/fiction fans of all types. I highly recommend this series and am looking forward to reading Book 3!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020Twist of the Thread is the continuation of Song of the Shuttle and tells the story of Honora in medical school, Arden fighting for the Union in America, and the unexpected marriage between Dolly, the maid, and Clement, the French-American Confederate.
It also follows the married life of Jessie and Robert, and their children.
Dolly was my favorite character. I loved how she managed to redirect what was perceived in England as flaws into an advantage when building her new life in America.
Married to the indifferent Clement, brought to an estate in ruins, she took the reins of her life and built a true heritage for her son Albert.
She evolved from an immature and silly girl into a full-grown strong, and determined woman.
There are several intriguing side stories, including arson and murder. Still, my favorite part was Dolly and the former slaves rebuilding their lives and connecting to each other in such a meaningful way.
There is a tad of romance, a little angst, and unrequited love.
It was lovely to meet the Davenports again and see how they changed and adapt to their new reality.
Great book! Highly Recommended!
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020I received a free review copy of this book from Sapere Books in exchange for my honest review. As always, I try to avoid spoilers and focus on what I liked and disliked.
Twist of the Thread is the second book in a series and I do recommend reading the first book before you pick up this one. The first book introduces you to the characters and provides some background to their lives. It helps the reader put the second book into perspective.
Twist of the Thread continues to focus on Jessie and Honora (a lot less Honora, just to tie up a loose end). The main focus, however, is Dolly, who I didn't like much in the first book. However, Evans allows Dolly's character to grow in the second book and become someone better. It's a logical growth, based on the characteristics I saw in Dolly in book one. Now, she's just turned them positive.
Reading the two books in the series brought to mind novels such as The Thornbirds and Middlemarch where the focus is on the lives of the characters. While there were slow points in the plot (I could have done without some of the Jessie scenes), the plot, overall, moved quickly and the characters were well developed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2020This is the second book in the Lancashire Cotton Saga and it was just a good as the first. The story is told from multiple points-of-view and it really helps the story to come alive. Dolly went from an immature young woman working as a domestic servant in England to the wife of a derelict plantation owner in Louisiana. Responsibility and purpose helped Dolly mature and find herself. I can't wait to read the next story in the Lancashire Cotton series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2020Thanks to Sapere Books for the ARC of this book.
I finished this book in one day! And finished it the day after I read the first book in the series. I grew to love these characters and root for them. I couldn't wait to see what happened. This book takes place in England and Louisiana right after the American Civil War. It intertwines the two places together very well and seamlessesly.
This is an interesting family story and I look forward to the third book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020This is book two in this series and I think it’s as good if not better than the first one. The story and the characters were interesting and kept me quickly turning the pages. I’m hoping there’s another book in this series. I really enjoyed the book!
Thanks to Sapere for the copy

5.0 out of 5 stars A very intelligent and entertaining story.
I enjoyed every page of this book. Following the fate of the families, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, was enthralling and addictive. The characters were diverse and convincingly believable. I enjoyed reading about that period of history, especially when it was interesting and entertaining. I am now going to read the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twist of the Thread
This is the second book in a Saga. I throughly enjoyed book one and this book. A really good story line with no expressive smut. These is supposed to be a book three release in the future but I hear that the author has recently passed away, so I am not now sure about this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Three strong women fight to break out from Victorian prejudices
This is the second of three books and is set in the wake of the appalling division and death during the American Civil War. The resultant ravages to the Lancashire cotton industry is beginning to recover as the Louisiana cotton fields adapt to slave-free production. Both regions provide the background for Jessie, a working class girl married into the local mill owning family and trying to raise a disabled child, and Dolly, born into the dregs of society who uses her guile to create a future for her illegitimate son in America. Honora, the third woman, from the millowner's family, is striving to become a doctor, something not allowed in Britain but is in America, fearing that the greatest sacrifice might be love - or possibly of her life at the hands of Dolly's reprobate Southern husband who has a score to settle with her.
Each plot line is well researched and the character interactions are powerful and effective. The author certainly knows her social history and the stresses of the times both in England and America come alive for the reader in a historical period less usual with saga writers. However, this reader became irritated by the constant reminding of plot information already given, almost as if the writer has left the work untouched for a while and is reminding herself too. Also the personalities were not quite individual enough to crank up the tension between them; the baddies were more vivid than the rest. This is still a good and interesting read, but read it for the excellent twining of the plots and the social historical scenarios.
