An Unconventional Courtship: Love and adventure in Regency England (Dorothy Mack Regency Romances) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,231 ratings

A compelling tale of love and rivalry in Georgian England! Perfect for fans of Georgette Heyer, Mary Balogh, Jane Aiken Hodge and Jane Austen.

Can Cleone play matchmaker while keeping her own heart intact?

Regency England

Orphaned and with no dowry, Cleone Latham relies on the protection of her penny-pinching great-uncle, the Earl of Brestwick. At twenty-three, she has resigned herself to a humble life of running his household and keeping the peace between him and her lively cousins.

When the enigmatic
Lord Altern comes to stay Bramble Hall — apparently intent on courting her most beautiful cousin, Emerald Hardwicke — Cleone must help promote the advantageous match.

But Lord Altern seems more interested in playing chess with the old earl and discussing art with Cleone than seeking out Emerald’s company.

And as they spend more time together, Cleone finds it increasingly difficult to resist his mysterious charm…

An Unconventional Courtship by Dorothy Mack is a classic Regency romance full of twists and surprises.

I loved, loved, loved this story! I found the characters charming and believable. This is romance at its best. It has such a realistic sense about it. Likable characters with flaws but also witty and relatable, that make me wish I could be friends with them. If you are looking for a pleasant, clean story, this is it! I highly recommend this book. I got this book for free, but I will definitely be reading more by this author.

From the book cover - For one of her tender years, Miss Cleone Latham had a great number of things to do. As a grateful poor relation in an aristocratic household, she had to manage affairs so that her great-uncle, Lord Brestwick, would not topple over the abyss of financial ruin. As a fond cousin, she had to help headstrong Philip Hardwicke escape the dreadful consequences of his folly at the gaming table. As as a young lady of good conscience, she had to make the enamoured Earl of Altern see the selfish, shallow nature that lay under the surface of her ravshing cousin Emerald Hardwicke. Of course, if the only way to save Altern from Emerald's clutches was to take this heartquickening gentleman in hand herself, it was a task that Cleone was happy to undertake. It was, in fact, a labor of love...

All the elements of the plot are in the description above but not in quite the way described. No matter. It's a good little romance, well worth the read.

I highly recommend any one of the delightful Recency romances of Dorothy Mack. Well written, in a style that fits the period perfectly, she creates distinct individual characters who struggle yet succeed in finding their happy ever afters. Simply delightful, these are traditional Regency romances of the highest quality.

These stories by Ms Mack follow a pattern: an overlong introductory chapter or two, then the story begins. At this point, the character development is good and the plot unfolds nicely, if wording. They are worth reading. My suggestion is to skim quickly through the intro, then slow down for the story. Interestingly, for all the verbose beginning and the wordy rest of the book, the ending is abrupt, even unsatisfying.

4 1/2 stars. I enjoyed the entire concept of this love story. Cleo was much too stubborn, of course, but where would a story be without impediments? It was fun to see Jason figure out his thoughts and feelings and to make a plan. The story was nicely appropriate for all ages. It was interesting to read about daily work and routines but I would wish the story to be more concise, perhaps by 10%? I look forward to more from this author.

Duty drives our heroine, Cleo, which makes her rather dry and bent on martyrdom. Our hero, Altern, has decided it's time to marry and he's attracted to Emerald, a Diamond of the First Water, who also happens to be Cleo's cousin. He follows, hot on the heels of Emerald to stay a week in the country at her family's residence and ... nothing happens. The attraction never deepens to anything more. After 3 days of being his most urbane, Altern comes to realize that he's just not that into Emerald. He doesn't yet realize why his attraction to Emerald remains superficial. Throughout his week stay, he becomes a good acquaintance (friendship's really stretching it) to Cleo and after witnessing her with Emerald's youngest brother and sister, thinks she'll be a wonderful mother. Then he realizes why he doesn't want to be with Emerald.
Now Altern has to gracefully exit the house without causing Emerald to sting from his rejection, then remove to a closer location so that he can woo Cleo. My only objection to the hero is he seems too perfect. No flaws to make him....well, interesting. So there's no real inner conflict for him to overcome. She remains oddly resistant, oblivious to her growing feelings for Altern. Once she discovers the true state of her heart, she's STILL resistant. And that's rather chicken-hearted, IMHO. Kind of a milque-toast couple, which I why I gave them 4 stars, not 5.

I loved the language! It is rare to find such interesting language in a Recency romance book; it was much appreciated. The tale was good and moved at a good pace, the story kept me reading and proved to be very engaging.

What a 'simple' man Lord Altern was, a blind person could have told him he had nothing in common with the self centred Emerald Hardwicke. Celine on the other hand was a gem, and not at all appreciated for all the hard work she put in for the family. The story was well written and entertaining, and the hero and heroine charming. Other members of the family, Phillip the confused their was pleasant as was the over looked sister Cecily and of course the two younger siblings. The mother Lady Henley was a wet blanket and well described by the Uncle/grandfather.
All in all an exceedingly good read. I would thoroughly recommend it.

    Great read.
Our spinster cousin is unaware her beautiful spoilt cousins suitor has fallen for her. Lots of twists and turns as this couple find their way to Worthing.
    Highly recommended.

I had long looked for an author of Regency romances to rival Heyer. Dorothy Mack is the closest I have come, in spite of reading a round dozen authors. The story lines, the characters and the use of language is excellent, and I intend to read all her books.
