The Uncut Wood: A Bear Camp Short Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 328 ratings

What do lumberjacks do at a gay, clothing-optional campground during the off-season? Play with wood, of course.

It’s time for the Jackolympics, the camp’s annual wood-splitting competition. This year I’m more determined than ever to win because I’ve got skin in the game.

I fell in love with Gunner the first night I met him. Two and a half years later, I’m still deep in the friend zone. I can’t go another season without telling him how I feel.

The wager is: if I win, he has to go on a date with me.

The Uncut Wood is a 12,000-word short story prequel to the Bear Camp series, featuring friends to lovers, a cabin in the woods, and a kilt-wearing lumberjack. This story can be read as a standalone.

One summer, not so long ago, Slade James started writing gay romance, turned fifty, and met the love his life. (In that order, in a matter of weeks!)

Slade and his partner, Steven, live in a magical land in the American Southeast where three states converge. They call it “GeorBamaSee." They can be found playing disc golf in the parks, hiking in the mountains, kayaking in the creeks, and living in their own real life love story.

Swoony prequel

Swoony prequel
This is the prequel for Slade James’s Bear Camp series. I actually read this after book 1, Grumpy Bear, because I didn’t realize it was a prequel. While the couple is already together in book one – there’s not really any spoilers either direction so it worked out. Cute little short story focusing on Hank and Gunner. I think friends to lovers is great for short stories because there’s already a lot of established history and connection between the MCs. Having worked at Bear Camp together for a few years Hank decides it’s time to for them to become more. James’s writing is equally emotional as it is hilarious. I just adore the banter between all the guys. I really feel that “found family” love. Hot guys chopping wood. Swoony first date. HFN. All make for a delightful read.

This was a fun novella! It wasn't anything unbelievably life-changing, but it wasn't bad. I thought the characterization was good, but lacked some nuance at times. There was quite a bit of tell, don't show. However, overall, I enjoyed myself while reading it... It wasn't as steamy as I would hope from a novella with a cover such as this. I'm looking forward to reading more from Slade James very soon, and I'm hoping that this Bear Camp series gets better and better with each installment.

I wrote that first paragraph before reading the rest of the books that are currently out, and I can say they DO get better and better. I also think that this book would be better received after reading Grumpy Bear. In my opinion, it serves to lay the foundation for the series, so the novellas feel like more complete works because we have a better understanding. Definitely check out this series!

January, North Georgia, USA. Bear Mountain Lodge, Men's Resort and Campground, clothing Optional.
The "Jackolympics" timber sports contest is held in January to draw some fun during the new year.
Sawing, wood splitting, hauling, and stacking is great fun for the locals, regulars and tenants.
Gunner, 29, and Hank, 24, are avid axe men.
Gunner is a ginger, Viking-looking free spirit and anything goes.
Hank is also a wild guy, and has loved him for 2 1/2 years, and this year, he's tired of waiting.
Humor and quirky fun for all. Hot toddies to drink, cheering, whistling, hairy muscles, and the crazy atmosphere is exciting.
A wager is made, so let the games begin!
    ENJOY !

It’s not that I didn’t like this book, I just felt like it was rushed. For such a small book, there seemed to be a lot of random things packed in it. I assume the author is setting the reader up for an epic series, but this novella could have had more pages to spread things out.

I already read Grumpy Bear, and loved it. When I came across this prequel, I had to buy it. Spade writes such romantic, sensual stories! I understand that he's a newer author, but his books are polished and perfect. His characters are smart, gorgeous and sensitive. I highly recommend him, and can't wait for the next book.

This author shows a lot of promise in his writing and storytelling capabilities. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their interactions. Their banter was perfect, and chemistry undeniable. I found the portion comparing cut vs uncut to be enlightening. Who says you can’t learn something from reading romance? This author brings a refreshing voice to the world, and I cannot wait to read more from him in the future.
