- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseStory was interesting enough to keep me reading but the spelling errors, clumsy syntax, jagged nature of the narrative - abrupt scene changes, weak pacing and lots and lots of contemporary tropes - mean we are likely reading self-published work.
I’m long past weary of the continuing trope of the “warrior women.” There is no actual excessive of this and in fact the only support for it is weak connections to some isolated archaeology and modern “woke” wish fulfillment.
The fact this author puts these fictional “Valkyries” in the roles of the best-trained and most ruthless warriors begs credibility.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseHaving read Cornwell's Saxon saga what I liked about Gibbons' story was entering this familiar ground through the fresh blood of Gibbon's characters. It was a kind of homecoming. The introduction, for example, of Sten sprung out of a minor Viking raid and reestablished the familiar religious backdrop of Christ versus Odin. Sten gains in strength thoughout the book. This character borrows nothing from Cornwell though the beginning narative of the book shows how indebted Gibbons is to Cornwell. The one detail of the story I didn't like was Gibbons' use of contemporary British colloquial expressions. It seems to disturb the authenticity of his new characters. However, I was especially impressed with his "never-could-have-guessed" final sequence -- a very strong ending for this story.
This new author does need some support staff, for example, a good editor and also a proficient proof reader. I wish him all success and look forward to his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars exciting Viking thriller: I could not put it down
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s not often I come across a book that I just couldn’t put down, but this was a page turner right from the start. The main character is well drawn with a mysterious past, which gradually comes to light as the book progresses. Unlike some books, there are an interesting and well developed group of supporting characters. I particularly liked the way the author puts across their thoughts.
As you would expect in a ‘Viking Age’ novel, there is plenty of blood, guts and fighting, and it’s all handled very deftly, without getting bogged down in details.
I really liked the style of writing: speech and thoughts are modern-ish, and there’s no mention of ‘wenches’ etc to make you think it all happened a long time ago.
If I have one little gripe, it’s the proofreading, which every so often lets in a grammatical error or a sentence that needs rereading as a word is missing. However, this isn’t enough to dampen my huge enjoyment of this book. Quite reminiscent of Giles Christian’s Raven books which was another excellent series.
Great work Mr Gibbons, and I can’t wait to get started on No 2.
