Vengeful Games - A Dark Psychological Thriller (Bad Games Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,131 ratings

In Bad Games, the Lamberts weren't safe at the family cabin.
Now they aren't safe anywhere.

Playtime is not over...

In Autumn of 2008, the Lambert family headed to western Pennsylvania for a weekend getaway to the family cabin.

They visited hell instead.

The Fannelli brothers. Two psychopaths who believed themselves exceptional, put on this Earth for the soul purpose of tormenting others for their own amusement. To make people play their twisted games.

Except the Lamberts managed the impossible. They played the game and survived. Showed the Fannelli brothers that they'd messed with the wrong family.

However, the game is far from over. There are some new players in town. Players who appear to have close ties to the Fannelli brothers. Players who are taking things very personally...and promising results that are very deadly.

If you thought you'd glimpsed evil before, prepare to plummet headfirst into the abyss as award-winning author Jeff Menapace shows you a new level of fear and heart-stopping suspense.

Let the vengeful games begin...

I've not had the pleasure of reading Jeff Menapace before, so when I happened upon Bad Games I bought it without any preconceived idea of what to expect. I started the book, and although it's cliche, I couldn't put it down. Menapace's characters are delightfully evil, scary as the thing under the bed and his writing keeps you breathless. I found myself reading faster and faster as the pace of the story picked up. These novels are not for the faint of heart; they're edgy and graphic and unrelenting. Bad things happen and they happen in grotesque ways.
My only criticism is of his female protagonist, Amy. I guess I'm just so tired of female "heros" being tall, lithe, impossibly good-looking, being drooled over by the males in their lives. Why can't a heroine ever just be a normal, average woman? Plus, I found her playful verbal sparring with her husband tedious and unnecessary. It sometimes made her seem bitchy and sometimes her husband appeared either unsufferably stupid or just so enthralled by her that it beggared belief.
However, those criticisms aside, these books will keep you up at night--just from the sheer fun of being scared and weirded out by Menapace's decidedly psychotic characters. Enjoy!

I was at the point where I could not focus enough to read, which is my lifeline. Reading is everything to me. So I searched for a book that would hold my attention. You know keep today’s headlines and devastating news away. Well this series did it for me. Fast paced hard to put down and so readable. If you like psychological suspenseful stories you’ll love this page turner series.

This book was better and worse than the first. Better in that the story and tension were better. More action towards the end. Twist ending that was fairly surprising but poorly executed. But this one was worse because it to so long to set up the tension. There was a ton of dialogue and other things that could have been cut from the book to trim it down

I loved the first Bad Games, it was one of the only times I couldn't put the book down. That being said vengeful games was a good follow up, not great, but good. The follow up to one of my favorite books I've read in the past five years, told an interesting story from start to finish, gave us more revolting horrific characters and caught us up with a family we felt like we fought and bled with at crescent lake. What kept this book from being great to me, was the fact it didn't have the same claustrophobic feel that mixed well with the almost feeling of experiencing what the characters were going through. It also felt as though everything was too open and too easily foreshadowed, and the new villains though great, were never fully explained and had a little too much equipment at their disposal to make for a real taught twist at every corner thriller. All in all, I did really enjoy this book, it's most definitely worth your time if you were a fan of the first and I'll definitely check out hell bent.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 2, 2013
I downloaded this yesterday after reading the first installment, Bad Games, and I've just finished it this morning. This is by far one of the best books I have ever read!!!

We meet back again with the Lamberts, and the new members of the Fannelli family who are intent on taking revenge for what the Lamberts did to their family. It was absolutely fantastically written, and it keeps going at an amazing pace. Each chapter generally follows on from the last, there are no annoying flashbacks while you wait for the story to pick up pace. The plot is believeable and extremely creepy!

The last few chapters I was honestly wriggling in my chair I couldn't sit still, waiting to find out what was going to happen. It was very intense and this is from someone who usually finds it hard to get too involved with characters in books. It very rarely happens for me, but this book, along with the previous, sucked me right in. I was so surprised by the ending but I can't say anything else without giving it away.

I cannot wait to read the third book and I will be browsing the kindle store for other books by this author. I personally would LOVE to see these books being made into a film! Considering the price, you MUST read these books...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel- cannot wait for the last installment
Reviewed in Canada on July 17, 2013
Vengeful Games is the much anticipated sequel to Bad Games... If you have not read Bad Games, go and buy the book now and read it- it is terrifyingly thrilling and suspenseful- a nice family weekend in the country turns a families life upside down forever and just when they think it's safe to turn out the lights and go to bed.... the terror has not ended. New enemies come to light in Vengeful Games and the terror continues. I absolutely love this author's writing- his books SHOULD be adapted to the big screen- he has a way of bringing the reader into the minds of each character (even the bad characters) and unfolding the terror and suspense upon this poor family and you cannot help but read one more chapter, and then another until the wee hours of the morning. I am highly anticipating the third installment. If you enjoy a good thriller , excellent writing and open to being "uncomfortable in suburbia", you will love these novels.

Sadly, I have to say that the thriller was a disappointment. It was not suspenseful at all and very predictable. Of course, it had some good moments too, but not many. The language was not as vivid and desciptive as in the first part of the series. Moreover, I missed the bloody parts, it was more focused on the psychological aspect. Unfortunately, this was not thrilling at all. In conclusion I have to say that it was an ok-ish sequel, but it did not live up to my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Games Galore!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 14, 2013
This book is the eagerly anticipated sequel to "Bad Games". Bad Games, I thought, was unbeatable. How wrong I was. We are once again catapulted into the twisted lives of the Fannelli family and their quest for vengeance with the Lamberts. Without giving too much away, we are introduced to other members of the Fannelli family who decide that the Lamberts have to pay for bumping one of their clan off. The story is ridiculously tense, to the point that you will not be able to put it down, so make sure you don't intend sleeping when you start it. It is beautifully written, and easy to read (no long, drawn out explanations or confusing twists). I particularly enjoyed how the author described the 'games'. I think this author is one twisted gentleman. Gory, frightening, shocking and an all round brilliant read. Near the end, the author makes excellent use of one sentence (again, I'm not giving anything away!) and you will be left thinking, "What the actual hell???!!". I have heard rumours that there is going to be a third book, and I honestly have no idea where the author will take us next, but you can guarantee it will be a roller coaster of a ride.
