The Shape of Veronica (Veronica's Life Book 1) Kindle Edition
It wasn't love that made her parents try to force her to conform, nor was it love when they abandoned her as a hopeless case, and a stain on the family name. Now she lives alone in a house full of servants, never to see the world.
But when, on her eighteenth birthday, she accidentally reveals herself to the undergardener, she takes the first tentative steps towards love through a journey of sexual awakening that knows no bounds.
But as she settles into her private exploration of sensual pleasure with the few people she learns to trust, the outside world forces itself into hers, threatening to destroy the only enjoyment she has come to know.
A classic new tale of erotica set in a past that never was, written with unrestrained sensuality and delightful wit.
Please note this is not a genre romance, and is a continuing story - next instalment out early 2019.

About the author

The author of this book lives in a part of England that has big hills, some of which are right outside the door. Other members of the household, apart from the humans, include an incredibly needy Russian Blue cat and a hyper-active Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. The dog likes the cat, but the cat does not like the dog. It seems the cat fails to realise his neediness could be satisfied by the dog if only he would allow it. The rest of the menagerie consists of even less pleasing creatures including lizards and snails. Very big snails. There are also children, who refuse to leave home despite having been old enough to do so for some time. Despite all these burdens, or perhaps because of them, the author escapes into other worlds and returns with stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017What the heck? No HEA? A cliffhanger!!! Nowhere in the misleading synopsis does it say that there was a cliffhanger. I hate that and took off one star for it.
Otherwise this was a funny, sad, poignant story of a 18 year old girl's sexual explorations in 1910. Due to her spinal deformities, she was EXTREMELY sequestered and never went outside except to go to church. She had no idea how to interact with society and she is very naive. On her 18th birthday a whole new world of sex is explored. It was well written and most of the synopsis was correct except can she really have an 'love affair' with her under-gardener Seth when they detail one sexual encounter with her personal maid looking on to insure that things don't get out of hand? And she only learns to give him a hand job to make sure she doesn't get pregnant. Although she does appear to have strong sexual feelings about Seth, they don't do any personal interacting. Basically only to let you know that she has strong heterosexual tendencies.
*** Edit: I didn't read the synopsis here on Amazon, but in BookFunnel. The one here is accurate. ***
What really was happening was that she was having an affair with her personal maid, Polly. Which does seem kinda weird because Polly was her personal maid for seven years and until Veronica initiated sexual overtures on her 18th birthday, Polly was strictly a person who helped her and was sort of a companion.
When informed she was to be married, she is flabbergasted. She never expected to marry because of her deformities. Lord Jamison came and told her she would be marrying his son Ethan. Because obviously her parents couldn't be bothered to tell her. Her father is in 'trade' and Lord Jamison said he 'bought' her for his son.
I really hated that her parents were never at this estate and never requested to see her. They just left her there after her 11th birthday when no doctors or quacks could cure her.
I liked this story, but where the heck is the rest of the story? What happens when they finish the renovations and she marries Ethan?
"To be continued..." When? Where?
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017I enjoyed this coming of age story about Veronica and her sexual awakening. The book is set in the early 1900s and stays true to the complexities of this era. It's also on par with the sexual oppression reminiscent of the Victorian Era. This is a thoroughly interesting story and leaves you quite curious about what will happen next. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018I received this from Hidden Gem Books for free in exchange for my honest review.
This was a sweet book despite its erotic nature. It felt pretty accurate to the era to book took place in and the characters felt fleshed out enough for you to feel emotions for them. The only thing that made me uncomfortable was Veronica felt too young to me for such explicit material. She was 18 so obviously, that's legal and others might not agree with my thoughts, but her personality felt almost 15-16? It just felt a little uncomfortable. This does end on a "To be continued," just to warn future readers.

This is the story of a 18 year old girl with a spinal curvature and hump. She sequesters herself all of her life except for going to church on Sunday because of the constant ridicule she receives when anyone sees her. I only have three stars because it was not my usual genre.
It was very well written and a good story. I am positive anyone who enjoys FF scenes will absolutely love this book.
As she turns 18 and comes into her sexuality her personal maid helps her explore her own body teaches her how to enjoy it. She then falls for the gardener but they never have a full scene. Only being taught to give him a Handy for fear of getting pregnant. Informed that her father sold her to marry a business acquaintances son she is torn. This story ends in a cliffhanger. I received this as a free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2017At different times through this book I could have rated it anywhere from 2 to 5 stars. For the sheer depth of emotion and the strength of the heroine I'm settling on 4 stars.
Unkind words and actions have left Veronica with a deep seated sense of self-loathing and a lack of knowledge of life and the world around her. Chance happenings lead to both a sexual awakening and a determination to take control of her own life. I'm not sure I totally believe that she went so quickly from an obedient and unquestioning girl to a devious and manipulative one, but I totally loved her 'I don't give a damn' attitude.
It took me a while to get into the style of writing, which was done to reflect the time period. I can understand why the author did that, even though this is a steam-punk version of the early 1900's. It's not a style I personally care for but I can understand the argument of needing to make it realistic to the time setting.
What made this book for me, and made me cry, was Veronica. To all intents and purposes she has no freedom, her cage may be gilded but it is still a prison and her every move is dictated. The scenes where she compares her twisted form to the body of her lovers broke my heart. She was so harshly judged and treated because of a physical deformity she had no control over. We like to think we are more enlightened now but it made me ponder on whether someone with a similar affliction to Veronica would agree. Do we still stare at and judge someone because of their different physical appearance?
I didn't expect the rather abrupt and 'unfinished' ending, from the blurb I was given it wasn't clear that this is part of a series of books. It isn't a cliff hanger but it doesn't answer all your questions either. Whilst I enjoyed the book it didn't leave me desperate to know what happens next, but I probably will read the next book just to find out.
