How to Vex a Vampire (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes Book 1) Kindle Edition
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part; what’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner, an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it, and Marcus—or as I like to call him, Fangy McFangface—would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not. But what he doesn’t know is that I didn’t join the unit because I was tired of being a homicide detective, I joined because there is someone after me. They’ve already taken enough from me and I’m afraid they’re going to take all of me if I don’t find someone to help. That’s all Marcus was supposed to be, but now, he’s so much more and I can’t imagine my life without him.
Marcus
The moment the pesky human walked through that door, I knew I had to get rid of him. He’s charming and almost everyone else instantly loves him, but he doesn’t understand how risky it is being part of this unit as a human. But as I get to know the stubborn man, I learn that perhaps he’s not as naive as I once thought. And maybe he’s what I needed to realize there is more to life than just work and my dog. A group arises who is threatening to disrupt the alliance between the humans and the vampires, but Finn is the one who shows me how strong that alliance can be and reminds me why it’s worth protecting. When threats hit closer to home, I realize I would do anything for Finn because he’s brought so much joy to my life—and because he’s mine.
This 105k word book contains: A creative use for undergarments, unintentional splits, a wolfhound who just wants to be a part of things, a vertically challenged human who still manages to wrap every vampire he meets around his little finger, the best date ever, possessiveness, really awkward dancing, some workplace revenge, and just a bite or two. Or three.
While the plot of the first book is tied up and completed, there's a minor cliffhanger that will be tied up in the second book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2020This would be my 2nd time reading this book. But also the first time I've listened to the audio book. The first time I read this book, I know I enjoyed it immensely as it has action, mystery, interesting characters, and hilarious moments that make me smile and laugh. This time around, despite enjoying it very much while feeling the same emotions about this book when I read it the first time, I sort of have mixed feelings about it and I'm not sure why. Maybe there is something I feel like is missing. Or it could be I just wasn't in the mood to read this book again.
*Spoilers*
I honestly do like the characters. Finn, Marcus, Karsyn, and the other characters are all really interesting. I am curious though, of just how old Marcus is and why he seems to be different compared to other vampires. (I'm going to avoid being specific on this subject as I think this plays sort of a vital role in the story or at least might be a major spoiler) There is the thing he confirmed about himself to Finn, but that doesn't exactly make sense on why Finn is noticing these things about Marcus that is so different or is a whole lot better than his past experiences. Marcus did confirm that DeGray, Karsyn, and Brooks are all older compared to other vampires, but Finn can tell that Marcus is older than all three of them (Marcus also pretty much confirms that as well). I am also interested in learning more about Marcus's past, as from what he had said, it doesn't seem like he has any children of his own. He also mentioned he had once been trapped in a cage at one point in his life. Why did he never have children of his own? Was it because of what happened with the woman he had mentioned to Finn? How did he even end up getting that severely hurt in the first place? Why would someone trap him in a cage? I just feel like there is so much more to learn about Marcus as a character, such as why he has kept his distance from other people/vampires for so long and why his brother apparently tried to kill him. I will say that listening to the audio book for the first time made me realize that Marcus's favorite thing to say is: 1. No. 2. I'm sorry. And 3. I'll protect you. As he says those things or similar things constantly, despite how cute or amusing it can be. Finn's favorite things to say seem to be: 1. Oh so sexy (lol). 2. Thank you. And 3. I'm fine.
I did find the whole "getting back at his fellow co-workers" scene to be hilarious. For some reason, I honestly thought I recalled that he started laughing in an evil like manner during that scene when they all started kneeling before him or when he attacked Wren, but I must have made that up in my head.
I am really curious though on who exactly is stalking Finn. It had to be an ancient vampire, but I don't really understand his fixation on Finn or why he basically tortured Finn in the past. I also don't get why he was with his mother during the car accident when she should have probably still been in jail and didn't have any custody over him. Was his mother somehow involved with his stalker? When did the stalking start happening? I also feel like the stalker vampire is somehow behind or involved with the group who is behind the drugs, as it couldn't be just a coincidence that he appeared in the same club as Marcus and Finn were investigating. I kind of thought maybe it could be Marcus's brother, but Marcus would know by his scent, voice, and so forth if it was. Also, his brother and Marcus are probably very similar in age, and this stalker vampire has to be older than Marcus from how powerful his aura was. So it has to be someone we've not met yet. It is creepy though how he always seems to know where Finn is. Maybe the blood he gave Finn acts as sort of a beacon or tracker? I am also curious about Orin as well. What does he do for a living? Does Finn's sister work in their father's company? Is he the oldest vampire in the city or is Marcus older or of similar age to Orin? Why hasn't he done anything or confronted the stalker? Is the stalker that strong that both Marcus and Orin are afraid of him? I think one of the issues I am having with this book is the writing. Nothing against the author as I enjoy reading her books, but the base outline of the characters is a bit redundant. Short, smart mouthed/sassy main character1, who likes to make jokes/innuendos, and loves animals. Tall, physically fit main character2/love interest, gradually softens to main character1 and falls in love despite being relatively mean to each other with their teasing. Also, having an older mentor who sometimes acts as a fatherly figure towards main character 1 or 2. And there is always a cute pet, such as a dog. I've read quite a few of this author's books and these are things that are used constantly in her books that are all very similar but seems to work for her. This is the first time I've had this issue, but I kind of wish she could change things up a bit and go outside the box she has built.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024So this is probably a 4.5 star for me. And I want to give it five stars but I found myself skipping pages of dialogue because there was only so much sarcasm and snark I could take before I wanted to drop the MC. This is definitely a case of too much of a good thing. There is a timing to comedic back and forth that works at breaking tension but when someone’s entire personality is one liners and lobs it gets irritating. I Love how our MC is kick a with two missing limbs. I love that this works is complex and interesting with police forces and bad guys, and adorable step dads who want to protect their human son in a giant hamster ball. But, and I say this as someone who loves a snarky take no prisoners MC…. Sometimes the best response isn’t a one liner…or twenty. Overall I liked this into to the series. I loved the supporting characters. I like that it’s not over explained. But I really did skip over pages where our two partners were talking because if I had to read another double entendres or snarky line I was going to DNF.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Love these characters! Entertaining and engaging story with a wider story arc that’s mysterious and horrifying all at the same time. Can’t wait to read book two.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025I have never fallen in love with a characters personality so fast! Finn has the best attitude about life and has humor to keep everyone around him from murdering him! The interactions between him and Marcus are some of my favorite parts of the book. I can't imagine a better partner that Finn for Marcus. He needs that attitude in his life. Now for the rest of the team I adore them.
The author knows how to create lovable characters as well as the sexy grumps. I can't eat their books up fast enough. The world Finn and Marcus live in is interesting and close enough to our own to be relatable. I just could not put this book down and am devouring every book I can find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This was a good story for an afternoon to relax and laugh. The main characters are quite lovable. Finn is funny without getting on my nerves as an attention whore which is a fine balance to walk, maybe the fact that he doesn’t act like a victim even if he suffered greatly in the past, acts as a good conter weight in the balance. The investigation is also interesting as it evolves from hate crimes to crazies trying to take control (terrorists). Good story and it flows with a nice pace. Lighthearted story even if torture and trauma are mentioned, strong characters even if their depth is not intense without it being shallow; we are reading a romance story so it perfect for what it is. The glimpse from their lives makes me want to hear from Marcus’s brother, maybe get him involved in Finigan’s protective circle and get to read Karshyn’s budding office love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super découverte
1er livre que j'ai lu d'Alice Winters. Une très très bonne découverte. L'univers et les personnages sont travaillés et intéressants. L'action est bien amenée. L'humour est très présent. Je n'ai pas pu le lâcher avant de l'avoir terminé.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marcus & Finn
This was a very different book and it sure should be enjoyed this way.
It certainly has no pretentiousness of being serious or full of sadness or even heavy drama, as it comes only to entertain and cheer the reader.
The author has a very unique way to write and to create joyful and bright character’s’ personalities.
This was the third book of hers that I read and they were very similar in this aspect.
Finn is simply amazing, fun and sassy in pocket size.
No matter how much he suffered and how much his life was marked by events that nobody should experience, he thrived as one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever read.
Marcus, in the extreme other hand, is always brooding, grumpiness at its best, but he gets under Finn’s spell and becomes addicted to his warmth and brightness as we do too.
Together they will bring a whole dark organization down and live their love at most.
Give yourself a chance of laughing in the most inconvenient places and times with them and read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Me ha gustado
Me ha entretenido. Los personajes son simpáticos y el relato policial acompaña a la historia principal. Estoy deseando leer algún título más de esta colección.
