Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.

Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.

Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.

Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

I am not a fan of romance literature, but I found this book absorbing and satisfying. The misunderstandings between the hero and the heroine were key to the plot line. Well-written and true to light romance.

A delightful story written more along the lines of Georgette Heyer, we have our heroine, Isadora at a loss when her father passes away. She has always put on plays and dreamed of being an actress.
Now she has to worry who will now inherit the family estate and what will happen to her and her family?
Roborough, a distant relative arrives and seems to be a good sort, but Dora acts contrary, always debating one thing after another.
Thus begins a rather winding path as the new heir hopes to sell the estate, to pull out his current faltering one that his father had left in a mess.
A really clean, well written character study that will keep your interest until the end!

    Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
    Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖
    Feels: 🦋
    Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔
    Tension: ⚡
    Romance: 💞💞
    Sensuality: 💋
    Intimate Scene Length: 0
Steam Scale (Number of Scenes): only 1 kiss
    Humor: Yes
Perspective: Third person from the heroine (I think there was some from the hero but it was mostly the heroine)

    Basic plot:
Isadora’s father dies and their family’s future is unknown. The new heir arrives and rumors swirl. Dora knows the only thing she wants from this life is to be an actress and she won’t be forced into something that’s not her choice by this new guardian.

Give this a try if you want:
    - Mid Georgian period (1798)
    - Low steam – only a kiss
    - Enemies to lovers feel with lots of back and forth banter/bickering
    - You’re okay with some misunderstandings being the plot focus

    Ages:
    - Heroine is 20, hero is mentioned to be not above 30, so 28/29?

    My thoughts:
I’ll admit it. The cover got me on this one. The new, updated cover was so pretty I just had to try it. But I didn’t like it much.

That doesn’t mean it’s a bad book. It just wasn’t for me. Many reviewers say if you’re a fan of Georgette Heyer, this book is for you, and I have only read 1 by her and don’t really want to read more so perhaps I am not the target audience for this one.

What I struggled with was that the whole thing rather felt like one big argument. It seemed the hero and heroine were always going at each other if they were in the same room together. The writing style too just wasn’t for me – which that’s just a personal thing. Overall I didn’t really connect with any of the characters here or feel any tension or romance. The humor wasn’t humorous to me. I guess I’m just a big stick in the mud here.

I did love the heroine wanted to be an actress. That is just fun and different to me from the usual heroine goals I read. I did like how passionate and vocal she was – dramatic but endearing.

I love this author’s use of the colloquialisms and speech patterns and terms of the time. They add immeasurably to the pleasure of reading this story. I believe I might have met a young lady much like Isadora, always happy to run headlong with her emotions and actions. This book is full of plenty of smiles. I received an advanced readers copy and I’m more than happy to give a thumbs up to this book.

Misunderstandings both reasonable and contrived. Fairly formulaic but the characters are drawn well enough to pull it off.
    Quite an enjoyable read.

I purchased and read "The Viscount Besieged" in a previous incarnation a while back. A few years and a few re-reads later, I still enjoy this book. Yes, it is on my re-read list!!

Ms. Bailey's stories are the perfect sort of comfort reads. Lighthearted romances, sweet and funny with deep enough characters and complex enough plots to keep me coming back to read them again. While I can't say that I would have handled the situation the same way Isadora does, I found her to be spunky and creative. On the occasions where the heroine is being particularly chuckle-headed, it just brought me more in sympathy with the hero, Roborough. I found both characters extremely endearing.

    Highly recommended

This was not one of my favorite Elizabeth Bailey books. Her books are character driven, well thought out and the first part of her stories Always set the scene. But this one was just too tedious and drawn out for me. The heroine, Isadora, was spoiled, headstrong, and quick to temper then retaliate much to her own detriment. She makes the wrong assumptions about the hero, Roborough, and this goes on and on for two thirds of the book.. The ending was Filled with intrigue and excitement. In my opinion, this love story could’ve been an easy five star read instead of three and a half, if only the rest of the story had been less redundant. I reluctantly decided to leave this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars drags a bit, but the humour is lively

After the death of her father, Isadora and her family find not only that his estate has been inherited by Viscount Roborough, a distant relative, but that the old viscount has just died and been succeeded by his son. A son who is both attractive and unmarried. Since Isadora is independent-minded, impetuous, and emotional, their relationship gets off to a rocky start; and despite their mutual attraction, it remains volatile, thanks largely to her suspicions and misunderstandings. True love eventually triumphs, but the path is not easy.
Isadora is a spirited and entertaining figure, yet sensible enough to recognize (eventually) the impracticality of her plan to become an actress; and Roborough is admirable, determined to fulfil his responsibilities to the whole family, despite the financial debts he has inherited. Her fluctuations between appreciation and anger at this ‘abominable’ man do become repetitive, however, and it is a relief when both finally confess their feelings to each other.
Some plot lines remain to be resolved, perhaps in sequels, but romantics will be satisfied and the humorous scenes enliven the plot.

From the outset, it is clear that Isadora and Roborough are destined for a happy ever after. The delight is in the twists and turns it takes to get to get them there. Bailey writes great characters, wonderful clever dialogue, and her characters, especially her leading characters, have depth.

A very entertaining trad romance that strikes just the right note. Good feel for period, good editing (very rare in this genre) and nice plotting and characters.
