How far will William go to realise his ambitions?

To aid his vision, he hires Cornishman Hal Vivian — a young engineer with ambition and talent to rival the ironmaster’s.
Their stormy partnership seems set to transform the lives of William’s family and the inhabitants of the valley.
And there is more than fame and fortune in store for Hal. When the ironmaster’s daughter sets out to win his heart, he must decide where his happiness lies…

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020I loved the entire series. I’m rereading #4 now. Jean Stubbs was a great storyteller!! Wish she had written more like it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2024I didn’t feel like the story dragged, and it was more about the family than the times. But you got a good sense of the times too, and made me feel nostalgic somehow. I almost didn’t continue with the series after the second book, but I’m glad I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2020Un-put-down-able series. Ended up binge-reading, & it does not disappoint.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Great historical research and strong characters. Generational family saga that you do not want to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020While not up to the entertainment value of the first 2 books, it was still a satisfying read. I guess I enjoy books that discuss the interactions of the characters more than the development of a railroad. Looking forward to seeing what the next years bring about in the family's lives.
