War in the Pacific: Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay (World War Two at Sea) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 771 ratings

Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima; the War in the Pacific was one of the most brutal aspects of the Second World War.

This enthralling history would be perfect for fans of Ian W. Toll, James D. Hornfischer and Craig L. Symonds.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched their surprise military attack on the US battlefleet at Pearl Harbor. After three and a half years of conflict Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur with representatives from the other Allies: Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, China, France, the Netherlands and Russia, accepted the unconditional surrender of Japan. It had come at the cost of hundreds of ships, thousands of aircraft and the lives of millions of men who had died far from home.

In
War in the Pacific John Winton tells how the Allies had been able to turn back the seemingly overwhelming Japanese forces and worked together to drive ever onwards towards Tokyo Bay.

It is a remarkable account of the ferocious naval war that took place in the Pacific and uncovers the ships, the submarines and aircraft, the naval tactics and the equipment used to defeat the Japanese. Winton also provides insight into the leaders of the Allied forces, not just Admiral Nimitz but also William ‘Bull’ Halsey, the superb Raymond Spruance, hard-charging Arleigh ‘Thirty-One Knot’ Burke, ‘Close In’ Conolly, the fighting Marine General ‘Howling Mad’ Smith, the submarine ace Sam Dealey, and the pioneering carrier admiral Marc Mitscher.

Wonderful record of the War in the Pacific. My only criticism is the lack of maps. There is not even one map in this book. Addition of battle maps would make it much easier for the reader to follow the battle.

Visited Pearl Harbor and wanted to put things in context with the Pacific war. This was a good summary of the major naval actions and path to victory. For me it was a bit complex with tonnage and air groups etc. but I am sure others would be interested in those details . Overall an easy read.

Some typographical boo boo's, but otherwise a good read with more depth and insight than normal. Not sure why certain so called international powers' always want a bigger piece of the pie, but it seems like a huge waste of resources? Well done!

Interesting book largely brought down by horrible grammar, spelling, and factual errors. There are multiple references to the Japanese battleship Havana; I am quite sure no such vessel existed. At one point, the book has a fleet traveling at a speed of over 150 knots. These are just a few examples.

Winton has produced a clear, yet detailed account of the Pacific campaign in WW2. The overview he presents of this sweeping battlefield would be a good Cliff's Notes sort of work for the historian wanting to delve into the Pacific campaign.

A relatively short book covering the key points and dates of the Pacific theater of The Second World War.

I recommend the book for someone looking for a concise overview of this aspect of the war.

    It was an enjoyable read.

A fine compact summary of a huge and messy campaign. Balances broad generalities with crisp detail. Highly recommended for WW2 novices.

2.0 out of 5 stars How not to write history
Reviewed in Australia on May 18, 2023
I found this book very difficult, it was endless lists of ships being sunk. The people involved were just nicknames , with little character as such. There was a narrative of sorts as the way sailed across the pacific but very little context. I gave two stars for the documentation and the cumulative impact but the story just didn’t come alive. I won’t be reading this author again.

One of my favourite topics of military history so maybe my review is influenced by prior knowledge. For me it lacked anything new or particularly interesting. I felt it moved along a little too quickly with short summaries of the big events which were worthy of more pages. But for someone new to the subject matter it's a worthy read.
