Pollard & Toye embark on another mind-boggling investigation! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, M C Beaton, Sophie Hannah and Faith Martin.

One bad turn deserves another…

Basil Railsdon is on his way to becoming Conservative MP for the village of Loxford. A wealthy widower, he is also about to make an exemplary second marriage to elegant socialite, Henrietta Legge.

But then a freak accident changes everything. And suddenly the life Basil had planned seems to be on the edge of ruin.

Things are complicated further by the arrival of a half-sister Basil had never known about.

And when his newly-discovered sister, Laura, is found dead on his property, Basil’s prospects take a turn for the worse.

Scotland Yard's
Chief Superintendent Pollard and Detective Inspector Toye are called in to investigate Laura’s death.

Was it a freak accident? Or is Basil now a murder suspect?

And how is this death connected to the disappearance of a local girl…?

This maybe the best story in this outstanding series of books.
Great story and a great ending, with just the right amount of, tighting up all loose ends.

I enjoy these mysteries set in the sixties, seventies and eighties. Tom Pollard investigates crime as a rising police officer, has a family and makes a few friendships along the way. I have read these books more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whodunit' before the mobile phone killed suspense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2017
Elizabeth Lemarchand wrote about 18 books, The main characters are Pollard and Toye from Scotland yard.
Her 'Whodunits' span from the mid 1960's until about the end of the 1980's She creates some very believable characters, and reading between the lines , she may have disliked some people who thrived on committee life.
I think this book 'The wheel turns' is possibly her best, Clever in the aspect that you the reader already know who did the main crime, but the ripples of one wrong act spread out with very far reaching consequences .
An ideal book for the lovers of crime fiction,Most of her books seem to be quite readily available through Amazon.. Those that are not , i have found on the web eventually.
A world before Mobile phones, so layby's with Call boxes are very much in evidence
