Where the Dead Walk: A Supernatural Thriller Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 5,081 ratings

A TV ghost-hunting crew. A haunted house. An unimaginable crime. A past buried deep...

An Amazon US/UK Kindle Store Bestseller: #1 Ghosts & Haunted Houses - #1 Paranormal - #1 Horror - #1 Ghosts - #1 Supernatural - #1 Occult

For some, ghosts are no more than the wounds loved ones leave in their wake, haunting the living only with their absence. Others take a more literal view...

Kate Bennett, presenter of paranormal investigation cable TV show, 'Where the Dead Walk', isn't sure what she believes, other than she seems cursed to lose all those closest to her.

After investigating a neglected cliff-top house, empty for a decade because it's 'haunted', Kate is convinced a spirit within holds the answers to a childhood she can't remember and an unimaginable crime.

What she can't know is that the house's owner, Sebastian Dahl, is searching for something too, and he intends to get it, whatever the cost.

What Amazon verified purchasers are saying -

- one of the most intriguing and enjoyable books I've read all year.

- Totally engrossing.

- Absolutely brilliant. Hard to put down.

- more than a horror story about a haunted house.

- Tense, edgy and with wholly believable characters.

- within this story is also mystery, love, relationships and friendships. It encompasses a great deal of everyday life all wrapped up in a ghost story.

- Outstanding.

- deep and rich and broad, convoluted in plot, twisted in character.

- one of those rare novels that I'm sure will stay in my memory for many years.

- It isn't a horror story with proper fiction elements added to it, it is a well written novel with a frightening theme.

- full of clever writing, well-developed characters, and spooky elements.

- Great plot, twists, turns and the reader ties the loose ends along with the characters.

- I love paranormal mysteries with a touch of romance sprinkled in, and this is one of the best I've read yet.

- A strong heroine, a paranormal TV show, and a house that may not be haunted after all. All these elements made me want to read the book. But the author's original twist made it a real page turner.

- Very spooky, but with an excellent storyline. It soon got to the stage where I couldn't put it down.

- Heart felt, spooky, intelligently written story. A supernatural tale that incorporates grieving, loss, love, deceit and recovery.

- Epic.

- I'm a big fan of ghost hunting shows, so this was right up my alley! Keeps you guessing up to the very end.

- Exciting.....heart wrenching....surprising.....all of the above and more! Great subject and a gripping read!

- As a voracious reader of the horror genre, I am often left with a "been there, done that" feeling. This book was a pleasant surprise - a well written book with an original storyline.

- a must read book.

- Really, really out of this world fantastic.

- Combining reality TV, deception, spirituality, an unwilling romance, tragic loss, ghosts and the supernatural all painted on the backdrop of a vividly painted seaside backdrop readers will be drawn in right up to the last page. Enjoy the ride.

Do you believe??? Have you watched any of the ghost buster type reality shows that are running now? Me, I enjoyed the movie Ghost Busters, more or less a spoof, as excellent fun, but have not watched any of the reality shows that have sprung up... Guess I take a light look at ghosts--but, hey, you'd have to decide for yourself...

On the other hand, a book--a paranormal horror book--can be quite interesting to consider. Where the Dead Walk pulled me in...I didn't know where it was going when a female character was introduced who was a "cutter"...Yikes! There are really no clues until it all blasts you midway and the "real" investigation becomes addictive as readers try to figure out what is happening... Is it real? An attempt to revive a television program going down the tubes...Wait and see... There is surprise after surprise as the investigators go back to an early fire...of a Victorian house...

NOT Like the Fun Ghost Busters...

Where the Dead Walk is a paranormal investigation show. Recently, however, the activity is now under another producer and there has been discussion as to whether their show will make it into the second season. All they can do is proceed to create the programs until... The characters for the program are an interesting group although it doesn't seem to have any with paranormal expertise except Charles. Charles has some skills but admits that, just like everybody else on the crew, he knows the main purpose is to entertain. He has the perfect personality to be a favorite member on the show and enjoys his position. Still, there are questions as to how far a show can go and still get away with advertising that they produce the "real thing."

So what if a crash on set might have been just caused by a member of the crew... It's been taped and looks pretty good as each of the ones on camera had reacted so strongly... Is this allowed or does it falsify the whole program? A debate would also go on and Kate Bennett, principal presenter has realized that there is a lot at stake for ensuring continuation of the program. What will she finally decide for this program... "Loud Crash" -- In or out?!

A little background is needed on Kate at this time. She's adopted but loved her new parents dearly. She was married and had a child... All of them are dead now, except her father, who dies during the book... Kate has some underlying feelings that loving her causes such losses. Her biological mother was killed in a fire many years ago, while she escaped with burns that scarred her neck. Did that tragedy start it all? Or was she already susceptible to hearing the voices of the dead...

Because as of the last program that had aired, Kate had been found...a man from her past was now a stalker in the present. And he was going to use her own program to pull her to him...

Sebastian Dahl had contacted the program producers for the show, Where the Dead Walk and asked to be considered for an upcoming investigation. He had built a wonderful new Victorian home, but he had not been able to stay in the house when he moved in. He had rented it several times just to ensure that it was happening to more than just him. They too had left almost immediately after moving in...

They decided to at least do a preliminary walk-through. Henry wasn't interested at all. Kate was. And wondered whether Henry could be jealous because Sebastian had paid quite a bit of attention to her... Kate and Henry had had a one-night fling but Henry was known to be a womanizer so Kate had kept it all light and fun. Henry, however, had begun to fall for Kate... and, yes, he didn't like this guy's attitude toward her! But she had finally won and got approval for the Dahl home..

Everything had gone well and they were ready to start. Kate, as usual, would lead off, followed by Charles... But then it happened.. .

It was fun to watch what happened with the program staff... Henry was definitely ready to wrap up and leave with everybody following. Kate was amazed... this could be the first "real" paranormal activity for the program and nobody seemed to know how to handle it... But she did later admit, upon watching what had been taped, that she didn't remember anything that she was now watching...

But she was ready to go back in and continue... So was Sebastian Dahl who expressed his frustration that they had seemed not to even believe him when he'd said the house was haunted... Were they going to honor their contract or not?

Bottom line for Kate was that she believed someone was haunting the home. Bottom line for Sebastian Dahl--he had a great desire to have Kate help him turn the house into his long-term home... Bottom line for Henry--he was going to protect Kate whether she allowed him to or not and Sebastian Dahl was hiding something behind all that he was sharing...

And Sebastian proceeded with his plan by contacting Kate directly and asking her to meet him...

Even knowing that this is a paranormal book, there is still no way to foresee what was going to be discovered and happen as the climatic ending drew near. At one point, I even wondered if Kate was actually just coming to remembering what had happened to her when their house burned... In fact, I'm still not sure... Regardless, the investigation by Henry and those helping him to protect Kate constantly opened another door to revealing the past and how it was affecting the present. If you figure it out before the book finishes, let me know! 'Cause I sure didn't! Cool, right?!

This is definitely highly recommended if this sounds the least interesting to you. It keeps the suspense moving through and has a few curves to distract you down false paths. Even what goes on at the ending is pulled so tightly that you may not realize what's happening. This author needs to be watched... I'm wondering what he's going to bring us next time!

For the second season of their increasingly popular TV show, WALKING WITH THE DEAD, the crew is scouting for new locations. When contacted by a Sebastian Dahl, inviting them to investigated his haunted house, co-producers Kate Bennett and Henry White are skeptical. It doesn’t sound like the usual kind of property they investigate. However, with extra time available to them and being in the area, they agree to meet with Dahl who does not live in the house. Arriving at the “grim stack of tile, masonry and timber” which looks as though it belongs in “the opening credits of SCOOBY-DOO,” Kate has a most unusual, baffling reaction to the house as they walk through it, nearly blacking out, and although uncertain about what she sees, she is convinced, “There’s something there.” Much later when the crew arrives to do some preliminary filming, the crew’s often entertaining, flamboyant, but reliable medium, Charles, stops dead on the porch, his face drained of color. Uncharacteristically, he declares, “I think we should leave… this house most definitely is haunted. And I don’t think what’s inside is good.”

Thus begins a truly unusual, ambitious haunted house novel, WHERE THE DEAD WALK (2014) by British writer John Bowen. Haunted house novels have become quite common, but in his debut novel Bowen appears determined to make his one far from the ordinary. There are a few shared elements with other haunted house novels. There is an investigation of the house by a team of quasi-professionals just as readers will often find. But this team is from a TV show known more for its entertainment value (such as the real TV series, GHOST HUNTERS) than any real scientific study. Bowen does a very realistic job of detailing the kind of show it is—one most readers will be familiar, with “shaky handheld camera work [and] …murky claustrophobic night vision and raw sound.” With nothing fabricated, the show’s credibility hinges “upon securing the viewer’s trust.” Maybe the film crew will present something inexplicable, capture some mesmerizing images, and give viewers “a glimpse of the paranormal… enough to let us wonder if there might not be more... than what we think we know about life and death.”

Property developer Sebastian Dahl’s house is also not the typical haunted house. It isn’t an old, decaying gothic relic, but only ten years old. No one has died in it, the house has no “history,” and except for a few tenants who have moved “out in a matter of days” each time. It has only been inhabited once by the “attractive, successful” immodest Dahl who left after three nights, creeped out by “noises,” objects turned around, “abrupt drops in temperature, all sorts of weird stuff.” The house, looking almost like a “set of a Hammer Horror movie,” is not built on any kind of sacred or burial land or in an area with any kind of supernatural reputation. Yet, Kate and Charles believe “there’s something ugly in the house.”

To further attest the novel is no ordinary haunted house story, Bowen early on provides a séance with startling consequences and flashbacks which begin to inform readers of both Sebastian and Kate’s back story. Kate’s recent history as well as that of her childhood becomes more and unnerving and tragic—one which she struggles to not remember while at the same time reaching out to understand it better.

What makes WHERE THE DEAD WALK more unusual and bizarre from most haunted house novels is the introduction of black magic, rituals, forbidden “workings,” drugs and hallucinogenics, even an attempted reanimation of the dead, as well as bits and pieces of vague information which may or may not be accurate. As more characters are added to the novel along with Dahl’s increasing meddling in the scrutiny of his aberrant house and the manifestations within it, it becomes clear many of the characters may or may not be who they say they are or have motives other than the ones they claim to have. Pernicious incentives are afoot as well as calamitous actions including not just those of the paranormal, but multiple murders of various kinds and at different time periods which help plunge the novel into the realm of mystery.

Bowen’s plot is a suspenseful one filled with a lot of detail even though some of the aspects are purposefully vague with occasional repetition which borders on redundancy. Kate’s visions, which become more frequent, are also paradoxically vivid and perplexing. Throughout the novel, the characters are convincingly portrayed as is the dialogue. As they are slowly unveiled, many of the book’s revelations edge toward being awe inspiring.

It isn’t until near the end of WHERE THE DEAD WALK with what appears to be time running out as if events are being controlled by a black magic calendar, before the truth of what is planned and transpiring begins to materialize, however still shrouded like a rotting corpse, in a truly incredible web of evil and selfishness. Even as the truth becomes clearer, duplicity reigns and the author throws in a twist to confound both his characters and readers and to make the novel’s outcome more indeterminate and haunting.

The conclusion of WHERE THE DEAD WALK is nearly cinematic in scope with an abundance of action and visuals. To keep his readers in doubt, one final, significant detail is, perhaps, not as clearly crafted as it could have been and will have puzzled readers re-reading the final pages more than once to ascertain Bowen’s final sleight of hand. It is a small price to pay for an intriguing, creative read and look at the supernatural goings-on throughout WHERE THE DEAD WALK. [Note: Bowen has published a sequel to WHERE THE DEAD WALK entitled CROW’S COTTAGE (2019).]

Thank you John Bowen for gifting Where The Dead Walk to me when i mentioned in THE Book Club on fb that my reading mojo had gone walkabout. I wouldn't in all honesty have chosen this book as a first choice because I seriously dislike those ghosthunter shows on tv. It is testament to your writing skills that I was quickly drawn into this book and found it hard to put it down. Unlike those tv shows it felt strong, something believable. It kept me guessing till the end and the climax sure didn't disappoint. My mojo lives to read another day.

Having won Where The Dead Walk on The book Club auction I couldn't wait to get started with it and I wasn't at all disappointed. This is my first read by John Bowen and most definitely won't be my last. I actually listened to the Audio of this book and I enjoyed it that much I couldn't wait to drive to work it definitely made my long Journey to work more enjoyable. This is one hell of a supernatural thriller which has a very unique story line. Being a fan of the Most Hunted TV show this book is right up my street.

Where The Dead Walks is a paranormal investigation cable TV show which Kate Bennett is presenter for and believe it not or she is very septical until a investigation at neglected cliff-top house, empty for a decade because it's "haunted", Kate is left convinced a spirit within holds the answers to a childhood she can't remember and an unimaginable crime. Can Harry her co presenter partner help Kate unravel the truth? The story takes a surprising dark turn when Sebastian Dahl the house owner is searching for something to.
I loved the characters in this story Harry has got a soft spot for Kate and make a great team. And would love to see more of them in the future maybe?!

Well what can I say I was totally hooked to the point where I was listening to this any moment I got because I absolutely loved it. John takes you on a journey dropping out snippets leaving me wanting more and left me totally flabbergasted that this is his debut novel. This is a corker of a read John's well crafted writing skills made me feel like he has been writing for years. with the mystery and suspense I was totally addicted and built up to a fantastic ending where everything comes together.

This is a must read for all Paranormal fans that love a well written good ghost story like myself. that will keep you wanting more until the end. This is one of those books that will stay with me forever. I cannot recommend it enough, this is a massive five stars from me and will be in my favourite books for 2016.

A good page turner, a couple of surprising and originals twists and turns and a strong gallery of characters we care for. I liked the part horror-part detective story. Not without flaws: may have required more chapters to enrich the whole novel. Will look for more books from the author in the futur.

Oh, this was an interesting and unusual book!!

Kate works on a television show that investigates haunted houses. Most of the time, the houses she visits with her team are probably not actually haunted, although the show always leaves a little bit of doubt, in the way that good TV shows of this ilk do.

However, one particular house appears to have some pretty scary stuff going on with it and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it. Henry is her business partner and he soon smells a rat. Can he figure out what on earth is going on? Will Kate be ok?

    4.5 stars from me.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Where The Dead Walk was a good read overall. As I had not read any reviews prior to agreeing to read this book, I started reading with an open mind. I instantly loved the cover of this book ~ haunting, eery with that edginess that made me want to delve a bit deeper.

The story-line itself was also very good and there were parts of the book where I sat wondering where in the world is the author leading me? In a good way! I was drawn in from the start, as the author dropped little snippets of information like breadcrumbs...I had to follow the trail! Although I do enjoy dabbling in the paranormal, it is not my usual genre. This book had a good mix of suspense, spookiness (is that even a word?!..it is now!) and even a bit of romance for any of you who enjoy a bit of that mushy malarkey. Thankfully, the romance bit did not play a huge part in this story or I may have had to drop a star! LOL. There was also a mix of channelling (spirits), possession, the occult and slight obsession so that was a positive, given the theme of this book!

The main characters who stood out for me were, of course, Kate--the main character and her paranormal partner, Henry. Charlie-- who was a part of the Where The Dead Walk team, also piqued my interest. And finally, Sebastian Dahl and Simon Renwick, who were what I would class as the "baddies" also left an imprint on my mind. My one critique, however, is that the depth of character was slightly lacking. By this I mean, none of these characters stayed with me after I had finished the book. They needed that little bit more development to draw the "wow" factor...for me anyway!

There was also a part in the book (which I won't go into in too much detail due to spoilers) that I felt could have been a little less...we are given a bit of history/backstory to one of the characters (Lawrence) and to be honest, a few pages less would have had the same impact. Had it not been a good part of the story, I may have skipped those pages!

Was it a good read? Absolutely! Would I recommend this book to people who enjoy Paranormal Thrillers...hell ya! My own views are just my opinion based on my preferred reading genre...to others, this could well be a diamond!
