On the Run (Whispering Key) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,110 ratings

Take it from Aunt Hagatha, darling: Fake soulmates and secrets do not mix.

I came to Whispering Key to lie low for a while. A man who has secrets to keep (like, say, his identity as America’s favorite agony aunt) should really not find himself embroiled in the paparazzi scandal du jour.

The last thing I needed was another guy in my life, since that’s what got me into this mess in the first place... but then I met Beale Goodman.

He’s my polar opposite. The world’s largest, hottest, most virginal cinnamon roll. The human embodiment of goodness and light. A man whose blue eyes make me weak. A man who wouldn’t know a designer label if he tripped over one. A man who rescues feral cats, for heaven’s sake…

And a man who rescues me, too, by pretending to be my fake boyfriend–er, fake soulmate–while I’m hiding out here.

Trouble is, there’s nothing fake about the way he kisses me, or the way it feels to be wrapped in his arms at night. And it’s hard to lay low when the strange-but-lovable people on the island are determined to welcome Beale’s new man into their ranks.

It’s enough to make me realize I’ve been on the run for a while, and that this might be the first time I’ve found something I want to run to rather than from.

But only if I can keep my secrets from catching up with me.

Fun series!
Toby and Beale completely made my day ❤️ This was such a fun, sweet, sassy read that had so much heart. Beale is at the top of my list now as one of my favorite, sexy guys. He was seriously adorable and I loved how much he believed the universe would bring him the soul mate he so desperately wanted. That mans heart was as big as his head. Beale was true to himself, but once Toby got under his skin there was no saying no to Toby. Toby was hilarious. I loved his snarky wit, it kept me laughing out loud! His vulnerability was endearing, he didn't let people get past his locked up heart. However, I loved the way Beale unknowingly weasled his way right in. Toby's personality fit in perfectly with the crazy shenanigans in Whispering Key. The cast of characters were great and totally added to the small town goodness without overshadowing the MC's. Fun series that I highly recommend. I'm SOOOOOO excited for Rafes story!

I loved this book so much. I half listened to it with audible and the narrator is exceptional at characterization and really brings them alive with humor. The romance was both super serious and emotional while also having super hilarious moments. I’ve read the licking thicket serious and was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the quirky characters and writing style. But I had to be in the mood for a super funny romantic comedy for those books. And this one both fed my need to feel deep emotion while also cracking up. I loved Tobias so much! He was “prickly” with a soft tender inner heart. He was secretly extremely vulnerable. And when he meets the tall steady Beale he is immediately drawn in. Beale is determined and very ingrained in his beliefs about the universe, soul mates, and fate. And he is used to being teased and not taken seriously by so many of his beloved friends and fam. So he is surprised when the new quirky guy who doesn’t seem serious about anything is so outspoken in his support of all that Beale is. I loved them. I NEVER cry in books. In 150 romances last year I tested up for maybe 3 and they were very dramatic books with deaths and grieving. This one made me so teary for Tobias’s super vulnerable moment at the end. I felt so much for him. The only thing that held me back from a full 5 star review was I felt the last 5% when they come back together really lost the momentum of the romance. I appreciated what May Archer was trying to do but I wanted Beale to really pull out the stops and be more epic in his reclaiming of his long awaited soul mate. Tobias’s lowest moment needed an corresponding epic high. Otherwise I devoured this book.

It was exciting to see Beale get his story. I love the way Toby sees him for more than most people in town. The big lie makes sense when it is to protect someone else. I hated the breakup that didn’t seem to need to happen but was so excited to see them work out as they both decide to fight for what they want. They audio was a fun listen.

This book was so deliciously good. Beale and Toby are opposites attract, secret identity, vacation fling, soulmate perfection and watching them stumble through to their HEA was painfully beautiful. They are real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as the messy humans they are. Beale is a sweet yoga practicing, crystal energy believing, calm giant of a teddy bear who lives in small town Whispering Key. Toby is a tornado of a drama queen from NYC who writes an advice column and decides to escape to Whispering Key after a compromising photo of him is published. An out of town best friend and lots of renovations cause Beale and Toby to become roommates and bedmates and the sparks start flying instantly. This book was filled with all the sweet moments, painful pasts, steamy scenes, quirky townsfolk, supportive family and friends, small town goodness, secrets, character growth and missteps, snort worthy ridiculousness, and all the love. Get ready to feel all the things along with Beale and Toby - you’ll swoon, cry, laugh, grit your teeth, and sigh. I am excited to see what’s next for the Goodman men.

I was so excited about reading Toby’s story. I’ve been waiting for it since I first read the first book in this series, and finally my dream came true!! I enjoyed every single moment, even the ones that made my heart ache, and I didn’t expect anything else from this author. I’m starting to believe that there’s nothing written by Mrs Archer that I don’t love, actually there isn’t. The way the characters feel so real, so human, and so much more than just fictional characters in a book, take my breath away, and yes I may be a bit of a drama queen, but I just can never get the same feeling I get while reading her books, with other books, and I have a list of great author I follow, whom I love and respect with all my heart, but Mrs Archer have definitely become my number one.
So, about the book; (I’ll try not to give too many spoilers) Yes, Toby needed a lovely, kind guy to love him with all his scars and broken heart, and I thought Beale, even with his naive believes of romantic relationships and all his idealized ideas of love and his destined soulmate, and whatnot, is the perfect guy for him. They complete and make each other better; while Beale needed a dose of reality, Tody needed some innocent naivety, and magic in his life. The bid sad of the story for me occurred towards the end with one of the characters that I quite liked from the previous book, Mason. He acted so self-centered and egoistic. He didn’t appreciated the love and appreciation the people in the island have for him. Also, he was so judgmental and mean to Toby, who’s supposed to be his best friend. Poor Toby traveled 1,147 + miles from NYC to FL because he needed his 10 years + friend, the person he thought was his only real, and genuine friend, but as soon as Mason sees him, he treats Toby like yesterday’s garbage, and basically tells him that he’s not good enough for Beale (someone that Mason just met recently) and to go back home and deal with his problems by himself, alone. It’s stipulated later on that Mason calls Toby to apologize, but I think that was not good enough. I mean come on, when you hurts someone’s feelings like that, an apology by phone is preposterous. However, everything was good and resolved at the end, so I didn’t think it’s something worth the deduction of a star. I was just kind of let down by a character I like but that’s all. Other than that, completely love it!

Toby is a drama queen and an advice columnist, who due to crappy taste in friends and poor decision making ends up running away from New York to Whispering Key. While running into one of the locals after being attacked by a murderous cat, he comes to realise that maybe the universe really does have a special someone for him

Goodness i swooned hard! These two... Gah! Love em to bits!

We've met Beale in book one. Strong, dependable and level headed. He's a bit quirky with his crystals and life view so tends to get overlooked as a bit dumb i guess. It felt like everyone saw him as a bit of a joke but in reality he's incredibly deep and insightful. Hes a free spirit with a calm demeanor until Toby enters his life in all his drama queen snarky glory!

Oh my heart Toby! I broke my heart over him! He's one of the best characters i've ever read. He pulled on the old heart strings with his belief that he wasn't ever good enough. His front is so endearing. He's funny and so dramatic he couldn't help but make you laugh and smile. But it was his heart i loved. He's so protective and caring and loving. He tries so hard to hide it but Beale saw it straight off.

These two together were an absolte joy. I loved Beales ability to read Toby. And vice versa for Toby. Almost immediately they had telepathic conversations with just a look and if that isn't Soul Mates i don't know what is.

I had a little sniffle. Ok maybe a cry. Ok ok it was sobbing for Toby after his conversation with his best friend Mason. I have to say Mason was in my bad books for a while there! I was so happy when Beale finally made things happen instead of waiting for fate.

Fantasic storyline. Made me fall for this town even more! I wanna move to the Key!

Oh and PS... size matters! Lol errr yum!

PPS... i was so happy for Marjorie! She got a second Daddy! Lol

    Bring on Rafe!

I am so happy with how much I absolutely loved this story! Just picked it up randomly, didn’t read the blurb and it turned out great! This book was hilarious. I honestly have no idea how many times I laughed out loud. The banter between these two and the sharp wit that Toby has was perfect! And to top it all off I surprised myself by getting so emotional at one point in their story I physically hurt for them and even cried (which doesn’t happen often)!

Toby was the sassiest character I’ve read in a long time! I completely understood all of his actions and some of his inner thoughts made me hurt so much for him! I’m so happy he found his home on Whispering Key with Beale!

Beale was an interesting character that as first I wasn’t sure I was going to like but he grew on me with every chapter that I read! Especially when he started to open his eyes to what the Universe was bringing him!

These two are such perfect characters for each other! Their HEA was super cute! I haven’t read the first book in the series but I had no trouble following along at all. I will definitely be checking out more by this author in the future!
