4.9 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

What will one uncommon girl sacrifice to save the life of her beloved mother?

A great unrest has been brewing deep within the heart of the Nine Kingdoms. From city to city, radicals dedicated to cleansing the realm of magic have been systematically executing anyone tied to the mystic. When they show up in Marble Moreno’s seaside town, the leader easily sniffs out her magic. Yet, instead of taking her life, he forces her to look for a cursed chest that can only be found by someone who isn’t human.

The catch? The chest is hidden deep within the walls of Stonegarde—a heavily protected school for royalty. Driven by fear, Marble goes to great lengths to gain access to the school, where more than one hidden motive threatens to stop her from locating the chest. Surrounded by secrets of the past and dark shadows that seem to follow her every move, she must find the courage to face her enemies or lose her mother forever.

A Book of Literary Magic. Clever and Poignant. For the Teen and Adult!
Wow. I don't typically read fantasy books, but a friend recommended this to me and so I gave it a try! I found myself reading through the book with a growing appreciation for the main character and her epic and mystical journey. I was hooked. Berge brings the reader along for a trip that includes magic, drama, humor, and wit. I appreciate a good book that can give you insight into your own journey and one that offers wisdom and a touch of inspiration. This is all of that and then some. Towards the middle of the book when the action scenes pick up, I found myself reading fast and anxiously, on the edge of my seat wanting to know how the main character, Marble, would get herself out of these situations. I was left with both a warm heart from the friendships that developed in the story and a chill down my spine as the story is one of fright and risk. It all makes for a powerful read. A rain-day book indeed that I would recommend to any reader thirsty for an entertaining story with enough creative wit and relative topics to keep you engaged. Favorite quotes! "A permanent ache of homesickness had cozied up inside my heart, built a house, brewed some tea, and taken up quilting." "Grief gave birth to me. Malice filled me with life. Vengeance was my purpose." "When the way forward seems solid and true, your courage will be tested to see what you do. Save yourself. Or save them." "Life is full of defining moments, easy roads and hard ones. Today is one of those defining moments. One choice leaves you alone, while the other promises friendships, loyalty, and me. She smiled and nudged me with her shoulder. "So, who are you going to be? The kind of person who walks away and takes the easy road, or the one who stands up and fights, who gets stronger, smarter, braver? The kind that stares directly into your own eyes and defies the guilt and fear that stares back at you. Who are you Marble?"

The Whisperings in the Shadows by Bekah Berge was a fantasy novel full of action, drama, and magic. I couldn’t put it down!

    5/5 stars

Earlier this year I read Sedendum by Bekah Berge and I’ve wanted to reread it ever since. Her writing style is just so addicting, so easy to read and so easy to fall in love with. I love how her books flow, how the plot plays out. I really enjoy her books!

Marble is running from the Collection, a mob created by the Iron Glove to drain and kill every magical being in the land. Marble makes it home to her mother, only to find her mother striking a deal with the Iron Glove. He takes her hostage until she is saved by Bennett and Zamia and becomes Zamias lackey (essentially her body double/ personal guard.)

Marble was an incredible main character. Daughter of a sea prince, she can breathe underwater. I loved her. Despite her being magical and stuff I really related to her. Bennett and Effy were some of the bigger squad goals in this books. Both of them were so welcoming and so easy to root for. Zamia was super cool, I loved her backstory once we got down to it. Pix was hilarious. I could go on and on about how awesome every single character was, but you should read it to understand.

The plot was fascinating, and the action just kept coming in the most cohesive way it could’ve. None of it felt disjointed. It was fascinating and it was a quick page turner that I could get through fast enough.

There is no other book like this. If you are a fantasy fan, you need to pick this up! I’m very excited for book 2, and I’ll be binge reading that, right now!

Love this book! It's a fun read with great character development. The story pulls you in right away and I could easily imagine these characters and their relationships. You can see them grow as the chapters progress. While the story is fantasy, you can relate to the main character and what she's feeling as she encounters one bad thing after another and placed in an impossible situation after being torn from her home. It's also easy to forget she's a teenager trying to do the right thing. It's a relief when someone finally notices this and gives her the sympathy and help she yearns for. It's action packed, but everything just flowed and you find yourself fully invested to see what happens next. Speaking of....I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Marble is the daughter of a sea prince, gifted with abilties that make her different. Discovered on a boat by the princess of a kingdom, they realize she could pass as the princess's lackey, a person sworn to the soveriegn to protect them. Zamia tricks her into agreeing, with threats against her mother from Iron Glove and things get worse from there.

This is such a fun book! I love the world that has been created.

I loved losing myself in the magic and mystery of the fist book of the shadow series! What fun to uncover the world of Sovereign and Lackeys that Berge describes with humor and grace. Is there anything better than when the characters in stories become your friends?!? This story stays with you long after you finish turning all the pages! Brilliant!!
