K.C. Carmine loves writing about people falling in love with a focus on characters and their (very spicy) journey to HEA. As a member of the queer community, it is important to her that her writing reflects the diversity of voices around her. While she is a lover of romance, she also enjoys horror, paranormal and mystery stories. When she’s not writing, she likes travelling, playing the guitar, video games, and reading.

A Wonderfully Crafted Novella

A Wonderfully Crafted Novella
Robert, a teen boy and tree-shifter, is a unique person in a world that is not fond of those who different. Tomek, an ordinary teen boy, is a sort who only wanted to be sure that his classmate was okay when he had not been to school for a couple of days. A chance encounter brings about a friendship neither expected, but each realizes they desperately needed. Soon their duo becomes a small ragtag group of friends coming of age and learning of life in general and of themselves, especially when the deep friendship of Tomek and Robert falls apart. Carmine builds a unique world where fae, selkies, and other beings and the ordinary regularly interact. Yet the characters are beautifully fleshed out and who remain above all believable and very 'human'. You will feel for the two leads in this beautifully crafted story. In a loving way that is never preachy, it is a tale of warm friendships, loving relationships and how acceptance versus intolerance affects the souls of people in a mirror easily reflective of our own society. "Whispers in the Woods" is a wonderful debut novella.

Wow. I loved this - thank you to the author for seeking me out for an ARC.

I highly enjoyed this tale of a fae, ent-like treeboi and his boyfriend. It was filled with awesome tropes like Friends to Lovers, There Was Only One Tent, Let Me See Your True Form, and others, and managed to worldbuild quite a bit as well in its brief 24k length.

Firstly, despite the subtitle, this is not just a love story. In fact, I found the worldbuilding really drew fascinating parallels between its setting and our real world. The setting is ambiguously a nation in the post-Soviet bloc, an excellent idea for this story, as environmentalist and queer activist agendas are a fierce battle in such areas. Our tree character happens to be both.

The supernatural beings in the book are "out" in society, referred to as Beings of Preternatural Origin and coexisting alongside normal humans, although not without prejudice and fear. The BPOs within the story serve as a stand-in for a multitude of marginalized populations today, be they religious, ethnic, gender identities or sexual preferences, etc. I found it really interesting; I'm always one for social messaging through a good story. Early on the protagonist remarks upon how the prejudice against BPOs is a parallel to homophobia and other societal issues in the human world (there is mention of a sort of "conversion therapy" to suppress nonhuman natures that I found brilliant).

Right, as much as I could yell about the clever metaphors and social commentary herein...OMG the romance was adorable. The boys befriend each other on like, strawberry-picking and mushroom-foraging dates. It was cottagecore as heck, and so pure. As for the spicy stuff - eyebrow wiggle - the love scenes were so well-written. Proper lubrication! Treeboy transformed! No more misunderstandings!

Ahh, it all came together very well. I would 100 percent read more from K.C. / this universe.

Tomek and Robert’s story was a beautiful blend of friendship and love in a coming of age story in a society where they were not accepted for themselves. It took years for Robert and Tomek after realizing their relationships never worked out with others because they were meant for each other. The story was well written and well edited and the pacing and character development was spot on. I would definitely recommend the story to others.

A slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance in an original paranormal setting with heartbreakingly realistic homophobic elements in its society. I really liked Robert and Tomek’s friendship, but I struggled with Tomek’s agonizingly slow journey of self-discovery. Tomek is so far into the closet, hiding even from himself, that Narnia is but a speck on the horizon. His turmoil is understandable, though fortunately things turn out better for him and Robert than he had dared to hope for. Tomek and Robert get together quite late in the story after living separate lives for years, so they don’t have much time to get reacquainted, much of their love based on who they were as teenagers. I’d have liked to see more of them as a couple. The worldbuilding is intriguing and the secondary characters likable and well written.

This story took me by surprise! Tree shifter??? Sounds a bit special I thought, but this wasn’t like I imagined at all.
This is a beautiful story about two guys, finding friendship, themselves and love. I love the characters and the connection between them.
Great writing, She really understands how to write a great story. And I’m a fan when food is mentioned in books!
4⭐️because I wanted more time with them as boyfriends.

The author captured my attention with the rich character development and highly imaginative tree shifter, friends to lovers tale. This was the second time I heard a story of such a shifter, and I found the green-haired and green eyebrowed shifter boy extremely original and cute. Robert’s vulnerability and the trust he put into his friendship with a non-shifter boy were both beautiful and endearing.

    I loved this novella!

Robert’s story is one many queer people will relate to, yet Carmine has managed to make it wholly original, without falling into any overplayed tropes of queer storytelling. There’s just enough tension to keep you hooked, and the ending wraps everything up beautifully whilst leaving you wanting more.

Each character is so well developed; Carmine really delves into their every thought and makes you feel as if you’ve known Tomek and Robert for years. The authors love for these boys really bleeds through the prose — you can’t help rooting for them from the very first page.

As well as having a strong storyline and believable characters, Carmine has built such a new but familiar world — the backstory of supernatural beings is rich and complex, whilst still being rooted in modern society. Each plot point is compelling, and it’s so easy to empathise with the characters throughout their ups and downs.

I can’t wait to read more from this author!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Friends-To-Lovers story feat. serious themes

One of the biggest complaints I have with this book, is its length. Like, don't get me wrong, it's nice for what it is and it's sweet and all but, it's tackling - or trying to tackle - some really serious things. Especially since the author themselves seems 100% capable of doing it realistically.

OK, context. This takes place in an eastern european country that shall not be named. It's very likely Poland, but if you wanna go with any other homophobic eastern country - like Russia - that would also work. I'm not polish, so I might not be the most quallified person to tell you about the very serious problems Poland has had over the years, but let's just say, being a queer in Poland hasn't been the bestest of experiences. It's kinda sad to see that this book takes place in 2004 and it's STILL VERY MUCH ACCURATE. Honestly, could you imagine what this book could have been if it weren't just 100 pages long?
There was so much potential for more. It's why most of the side-characters are pushed into the shadows - which is a shame because we've got some very intersting ones.

Things this book had that might interst you:

    + Friends to Lovers
+ An insight into the Early 2000 East-European Queer Experience
    + Hurt/Comfort
    + Internalized Biphobia
    + Mystical Creatures
+ There was only one bed/tent

It touches some darker things as well, but not in too much detail and not explicitly. But it IS there.

All in all, I felt like this was a nice story.

This was a beautiful story about falling in love (but not realizing it), coming of age, fighting the good fight, and finding oneself after years spent missing the obvious. As someone who discovered their own queerness later in life, I really connected with this book, and the characters within.

A really fantastic read that moved through cute, to tantalizing, to heart-breaking, then into a perfectly handled hop-skip-and-jump into happy for now bliss. Brilliant debut novel, looking forward to whatever else KC Carmine comes out with!

This is a fantastic book, in every way Tomek and Robert are amazing characters, deeply friends and friends of friends, who wouldn't want to be a part of that lovely group? Being at that New Year's party...very interesting, beautiful and funny people. I felt the sensation in the fable of discovering self-orientation and sexuality, denial based on fears, homophobia... but how people's truth finds ways to come out and make a person get in touch with their own feelings and before that with themselves, this is the journey of Tomek, a boy who doesn't know, who often chooses not to investigate what's inside from the heart... on the other, we have Robert who gives us the impression of always knowing, as much about himself, perhaps awakened by the need to recognize the transformations of his own body and how painful this can be, but that also helps to build the person who is! And of course, the love for his friend... and how painful the idea of losing a friend is, and how beautiful it is that they call each other friends always, even when feelings are already on the table! Gorgeous, romantic, charming, highly recommended! 5⭐

This book is a beautiful tale of a man learning to accept himself and his efforts to get back to the man he loved when he was younger. I loved this book; it's a sweet but very personal story of struggling with your own identity, and doing whatever you can to finally live the life you so desperately wanted to repress. Seeing the protagonist's journey is beautiful and thought-provoking, and the ending is really sweet, and you can't help but smile while reading it. It's a cute story that I really recommend!
