Whiteout: An MM Bisexual Out For You Sport Romance (Snowed In Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 641 ratings

Two straight guys snowed-in on a mountain. A game of twenty questions. What could go wrong?

Getting trapped on a mountain, snowed-in for a three-day blizzard, wasn’t exactly planned. But at least my guide is good company.

There’s a connection between us. A bond.

We have undeniable chemistry.

But we both consider ourselves straight.

That’s where our similarities end though. In almost every other way, we’re opposites—I’m a pro-snowboarder, he’s a paramedic. I’m the relationship guy. He’s a player. He wants casual, no strings.

I… don’t.

He’s not good for me, but I can’t seem to stay away.

Whiteout is book one in Ann Grech’s international hit male/male romance series, Snowed In. White Noise and Whitewash continue Reef and Ford’s story.

By day Ann Grech used to live in the corporate world and could be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. She graduated with a PhD in 2016 and is now an over-qualified nerd. But the grind got old, and the voices got louder. She still has the librarian look nailed, but she’s a little freer to be herself now.

She’s never entirely fit in and loves escaping into a book—whether it’s reading or writing one. But she’s found her tribe and loves her book world family. She dislikes cooking, but loves eating, can’t figure out technology, but is addicted to it, and her guilty pleasure is Byron Bay Cookies. Oh and shoes. And lingerie. And maybe handbags too. Well, if we’re being honest, we’d probably have to add her library too given the state of her credit card every month (what can she say, she’s a bookworm at heart)!

In 2019 she was an Award-Winning Finalist in the Fiction: LGBTQ category of the 2019 Best Book Awards sponsored by American Book Fest for her story In Safe Arms.

She also publishes her raunchier short stories under her pen name, Olive Hiscock.

A little confession about this recommendation… it is looooong overdue. Sometimes there are those books that just stick with you and you’re not sure why, 'Whiteout' is one of those for me. I read this when it first came out and I have always had this niggling notion I did Ann Grech a disservice when I didn’t review these wonderful men’s story.

Why didn’t I rate it you might ask? Because someone made me question my viewpoint on “insta-love” – and who am I to judge when I’m a gold standard for insta-love? I knew when I opened the door to my now husband on our first date that he was the one…. Little did I know he had told his own mother he’d met the girl he was going to marry.

Reef and Ford’s meeting might be insta-love, just like my husband and I, but Ms. Grech paints a perfect picture of two men meant for each other, and that is why (almost three years later) their story still sticks in my mind. Who are we to judge what’s right or wrong, too fast, if a straight man or otherwise would say certain things? Every person’s story is unique and every love story is its own.

As professional snowboarder Reef Reid takes a little time for respite, to get his head back in the game after his girlfriend cheats on him, he discovers a mix up in his plans. Queensland, Australia is not the same as Queenstown, New Zealand. Upon arriving, however, he’s determined to enjoy the ski village… after all, the thrill of snow and boarding is in his veins and what better place to chase it. When he hires a heli-ski drop to take him to the back country, he rediscovers his passion… in more ways than one.

Straight playboy Ford Wallace doesn’t have time for more than a one-night-stand, but when circumstances trap him with his heli-ski patron on the mountain during a whiteout, things begin to change. Not only does he find himself attracted to a man, but wanting more.

In the boredom of their forced seclusion, a game of 20 questions leads the men to realize they have more in common than they think and builds the anticipation like the blizzard rustling the cabin walls around them. As each man appreciates the other for his athleticism, there is an animal magnetism toward the other that neither can deny. As a result, they each begin to question and analyze their sexual identity.

When they return to the real world, they both start to reevaluate where they’re going, and with whom. Ford suddenly sees himself committing to someone and Reef pictures that white picket fence future he’s always wanted. But as right as it feels… can they take a risk – for another man?

There’s a brief moment of tension due to misinterpretation but Ann Grech keeps their confusion to a minimum resulting in minimal angst. By highlighting each man’s internal thoughts the author shows the reader that even though they’ve only had Male/Female relations and attraction up to now, Reef and Ford are so confident within themselves, and their desires, that they are determined what they want with each other – is right for them.

Although a satisfying happy-for-now ending, Ann Grech leaves 'Whiteout' open to the next installment in the “Unexpected” series, where we will venture to discover just where open hearts and open minds will find Reef and Ford. After all, this edition is a story of love at first sight and of accepting that spark, even when it’s not quite how you always envisioned it.

A solid "I liked it" read. A free book on kindle that doesn't have much substance to it and requires a healthy suspension of disbelief. This is the type of book I read when my dog is having major surgery in two days and this simply puts my mind somewhere else. Quite short, very easy to read, low stakes, low tension, with characters just likeable enough to want to just let them have a happy ending, as cheesy as it sometimes seems to be for how it comes about.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?
    Sure.

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: I'll admit, it was hard not to giggle at their names: "Reef" and "Ford." I think simply their names lends to the reduced degree of intensity in this story. There really isn't much to them, except that they are likeable and universal in just wanting to be happy.

PLOT: Essentially the two boys meet at a ski resort where they accidentally get caught up in a storm and have to huddle away in a cabin until the storm passes. The first half of the book deals with that and their extremely-insta-lust feelings for each other from two supposedly-always-been-straight guys. It's fine. Again, just a healthy suspension of disbelief because it really isn't meant to be super intense at all. They get out of it, and then have a couple of quick hiccups before deciding they want to be together. The end.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

1:5/low. A beach read (pun intended). No frills, no strings attached, just two boys falling in love nice and quickly.

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

100%. I mean, again, I wasn't expecting any sort of fulfillment in this one. It's a HEA and there wasn't much by way of stakes. I finished just as I started: happy to take my mind somewhere else for a few hours.

I really enjoyed this book and the MCs. One an American pro-snowboarder getting away from the stresses of his career and recent breakup with a cheeting girlfriend. The other a British mountain rescue playboy at a ski resort in New Zealand. Both are straight but find an instant connection through their love of the snow and mutual appreciation of each other's abilities on the slopes. So they get trapped in a blizzard and their attraction to each other increases. I think the author could have built up these scenes more during their time in the cabin. Instead you have one scene where they find the cabin and then it's 4 days later. Those days of being isolated could have really laid good firewood for the passion that ignites later. Other than that, the story has a good pace and I am glad there will be a continuation to their story.

Ooh, this story was so, so good. The adrenaline pumping leading to that first kiss!
Then the realization that they had fallen for each other, unexpectedly - turning into such a beautiful love story - can't wait to read book 2

Ann Grech is a new to me author when I picked up this book, and I'm really glad I did so. It's got forced proximity, GFY, great world building, and the kind of passion between characters that leaves you able to feel the how deeply they crave one another. Reef and Ford are both overwhelmed by their attraction for the other and struggle to navigate what it means for them. I liked how they eventually handled it without too much drama though, and the banter and moments between them were just the right balance of tender and sweet. Looking forward to jumping into the next book for more Reef and Ford!

Plenty of what you want in this book. Some humour, a but of dramatic action, some sizzle and 2 strong men not afraid to explore their feelings. Looking forward to the next book (but a little disappointed to think I had another half hour of reading in this one until turning the page and suddenly see "The end for now".

For two straight guys it comes as a big shock that they almost immediately can’t get enough of each other. They are initially forced to shelter for a while during a storm, they do both save each other’s lives on separate occasions, but their chemistry is off the charts. Once danger is gone, they don’t want to go back to how they were. They both have to come out to friends and family, which is scary, but they will anyway. Decent story, book 2 should be good.

💖 I'm a fan of this author, with her books easily to love. I loved this one for the start of Reef and Ford beginnings. Lots of beautiful scenes included and well written love, danger and ending with a HFN to continue in the next book.
Includes adventures in a new town, two straight dudes stuck in a cabin, hot chemistry, 8 yrs difference, funny banter, danger and a few little time jumps but a gorgeous story.
Reef 33 yrs was a pro-snowboarder on a vacation to relax in more snow a mix-up instead of sand. Newly split from a cheating girlfriend he wanted fun.
Stratford aka Ford was a mountain rescue medic loved skiing for his work.
