- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2015This is an awesome book!! Its creepy in a good ghostly way and I absolutely loved the story line!
I am not going to say too much about the story because I do not want any spoilers revealed but I did spend the whole book trying to figure out how everything connected.
How much did I love this book? it was a one day read for me, that is always the sign of a great story. This is young adult but not angsty (its a word lol) love young adult. So go grab this book :) It would be the perfect Fall/ Halloween book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2016This book was offered to me by the author's "camp" in exchange for my honest opinion. Seems they had seen my review of "Garden Spells" and thought I'd do "Escape" justice. That being said, I have 2 points to make before I review. This book is NOT like Garden Spells. It is different, evil, the magic is darker . While both books have a supernatural bent, there really is no comparison. Also, I feel it fair for me to point out that I am really not the "YA" target, finding it difficult to identify with a teen protagonist...but I gave it a go nonetheless.
Our hero "Honoria" (sorry but I HATED that name) is in the most contemporary story line of 2001. She lost her parents in the Twin Towers attack. Honoria and her brother move with relatives to a remote town with Witchwood Hollow in their backyard. We also have the witch, in her beginnings in 1670, and her "victims" from centuries afterwards, roaming Witchwood Hollow but bound in by the Witch's curse.
The story is interesting, well told. I loved the old village, the old houses and foundations, the dark woods. I especially liked the way each victim was revealed and their stories intertwined with the others in the village. You have the usual YA teenage angst, crushes, and the mean girls. A bright spot for me: Honoria's imaginary fashion magazine and how she kept bookmarking events in her mind for future issues. I found that fresh and original.
My least favorite part of the book (besides her name) was the number of times I had to read the word "cool". Yes, I know that's how many teens talk. It just irritated me so badly at one point that it made me wish they'd go get lost in the woods so I wouldn't have to hear them say it one more time. Ugh. The ending, while it made sense, was a bit disturbing to me. But aside from that it was a well developed, compelling supernatural story I enjoyed reading.
For lovers of a good YA / fantasy novel, this one is it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI recieved this book as part of the November TBR Take Over in exchange for an honest review.
I give this book 3 stars.
While this story was not a long one, under 200 pages, there were moments when the story dragged.
I did like that this was a different set up for a scary story. It had the feel of a spooky local legend told around a campfire, but also had events that spanned about 400 years.
I wish that we had gotten more information about the witch other than a vague scene of why she created the Hollow, but the simplicity of why she created the Hollow reflect human nature and the more childish side that everyone has as part of their personality.
The characters in this story provide variety to this spooky story, they were from different times and different places, and the difference between American country speak in the 1800’s and England accents were relayed perfectly.
I did love the conclusion to this story, it was in a sense a love story. So closet romantics who like the darker or spookier side of things would enjoy this book as a good weekend read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2015I really like the storyline and the writing style of this author. While reading I could picture myself in the environment and talking to the characters. The story line worked very well with the moving back and forth between the present and the past. The ending was unexpected but was very moving and when you look back it fit in very well. Would certainly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2015I usually do not like this kind of book. As I first picked it up it upset me that it bounced back and forth to 3 generations of characters. But as I read on ( I told the author that I would give her a review,I was not compensated by her at all I bought the book) it started to get interesting especially when it got to the people who were in the witchwood hollows. I had trouble keeping one part from the next as only one character stood out in each of the earlier years. As in the 2011 story I didn't associate the librarian with one of the main characters. Just when I started getting into and keeping people straight I got thrown a curve ball. For someone who likes this genre I would recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2015I had the pleasure of reading this amazing story from its rough beginnings and now to its final print.
Mrs. Elizabeth's ability to draw me and my three boys; ages, 11, 13, and 14 is something truly spectacular. Especially since my 14yr old has mild autism and can follow her rich story telling.
My family can't wait to see what the great new author comes up with next.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a great read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA lot of other reviews have said the time skips confused them a little, but honestly, for me, it was executed very well. I liked the characters and the style. It was very well written. I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, but that’s probably just more personal preference than anything else.
Great book over all, well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm glad I downloaded this book from the November TBR. Three main characters from three different time periods. Parts of the time jumps were confusing, I wasn't sure where the story was going to lead however it all worked out in a surprise ending. Great storyline, visuals and loved all the characters.
