The Wolf Hunt: U-Boat warfare in South African waters (Jack Pembroke Naval Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,321 ratings

Jack Pembroke is back in another thrilling wartime adventure! For fans of Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian, Chris Durbin, Douglas Reeman and Max Hennessy.

The South Atlantic Wolves are on the attack…

1941

Lieutenant Jack Pembroke has found a new home and new love at the Cape, but it will all hang in the balance with the arrival of the enemy in South African waters.

With the Mediterranean all but closed to maritime traffic, and Rommel’s forces rampaging through North Africa, this sea route is vital to supplying the Allied forces in Egypt.

But German U-boats have been sent by Admiral Donitz from their bases on the west coast of France to cripple the convoy route.

Jack is put in command of a small anti-submarine flotilla in the Royal Navy base of Simon’s Town, South Africa.

But he has very little time to train his officers and men, and prepare his ships, for the arrival of the Nazi wolf packs.

With the Cape under attack, Jack has to escort a vital convoy from Cape Town to Durban.

But with the enemy U-boats lying in wait in the storm-ravaged waters, he’ll be luck to make it out alive…

THE WOLF HUNT is the second action-packed military adventure in the Jack Pembroke Naval Thriller series: authentic British Navy war stories set during the Second World War.

A superb book, written like an Alistair McClean novel. Yes, I think the author is that good.

A WW2 story of U-boats vs antisubmarine hunter vessels. A superb plot written from the viewpoint of both the hunter and the killer. A gutsy novel that places you beneath the waves, feeling the terror of depth charges exploding around you, as well as above the waves, dreading the explosion of an incoming torpedo.

A side plot involving a nazi spy adds a lot of colour and interest.

One of the best books I have read for many a day, prompting me to download the previous book 1 in this 2 book series.

Enjoyed reading this book, seems the author has either had naval experience or is very detailed in naval terminology, reads well, fast at the right times and achingly slow...as real warfare can be, as a veteran myself I found this book enjoyable and have added the author to my list of good authors of the current era, which frankly is a thin list. Settle in, grab a mug of good coffee, and plenty of munchies, you're in for a good voyage!

First off if you are a Kindle reader go to the end if the book for a glossary of terms. I finished the second book before I discovered this help. This series has enlightened me to the impact of WW2 in South Africa! The author's details in describing ship life and the battles are brilliant! I did think that Jack would shoot at the incoming torpedo not, the ingenious use of a depth charge!

Submarines from the Reich even managed to reach the Indian Ocean and Japan, but in too few numbers to chnage the production capacity and manpower of the allies.Their ruthlessness has ben a favorite topic of war writers, but there are some examples of barbarism on all sides. Tense, varied account though the romances were somewhat stilted. All in all, an enjoyable dscovery of yet another deadly arena of WW2.

This is a well written yarn about German submariners and South African DIY sub chasers. 3 fishing trawlers are converted to sub chasers and crewed by South African Royal Navy. It reads like fictional fact but I couldn’t find a cruiser that was sunk in the story. It’s also interesting to see “new words” those that are unknown to unsophisticated Yanks written by our British cousin. You out foxed my Kindle library more than once. Well worth your time, kept me from getting to bed before 12. Thank you Justin.

The author does a wonderful job at capturing the raw emotions felt by the main character as he does his job: Killing the enemy. It’s early in World War II and there’s a lot of growing up amongst the crew of the Gannett. Civilians turned into warriors. Children into adults.

I look forward to the next book. Don’t make us wait too long.

I found that among books of this genre and available through Kindle Unlimited, the quality far surpassed what I expected. It was refreshing to actually have the odd word that I needed to look up! No lowest common denominator here - let’s learn something!

    Excited for book 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and fast paced

When I had finished reading Book 1, I looked for Book 2 but it hadn't been published at that time. So when Book 2 was eventually available on Kindle - and for only 99 cents - I was really excited. What a bargain. I found both books engrossing and fast paced. I can't comment on location, naval, or historical accuracy though. But that didn't matter to me - I just loved the Jack Pembroke character and story created by the author. I now await Book 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars Justin Fox does it again
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 30, 2022
The naval action, the life at sea and the historical realism are great. The scenes in the U-boat under attack and in the storms off the cape are stunning. Good work. I have given it 4* not 5* only because I felt the sub-plots on land (no spoilers) were not quite as gripping as the epic sea battles against the elements and enemies. However, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I’ll be looking forward to the next one.
