The Years Between: 1939-44 (Cecil Beaton's Diaries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

A classic six-volume memoir of the twentieth century, spanning through the Second World War, the Golden Age of Hollywood and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Sir Cecil Beaton (1904 –1980) was an English fashion, portrait and war photographer, painter, diarist and Academy Award-winning stage and costume designer.

This second volume spans most of the Second World War from 1939-44. An official photographer for the Ministry of Information, Beaton was flown all over the globe to report back to London, as well as being commissioned to photograph Winston Churchill, the Queen, bomb-damaged London and the RAF at work.

With unique access to politicians, admirals, air marshals, socialites and those working on the homefront, Beaton’s memoir tells us more about the English at war than many volumes of officers’ memoirs have been able to.

THE YEARS BETWEEN is the second volume of Cecil Beaton’s Diaries, a personal memoir of the twentieth century, covering famous artists and photographers, political figures, socialites, the rich & famous and movie stars.

Perfect for fans of THE CROWN, LOVE, CECIL, fashion photography, artist’s memoirs, and twentieth-century history.

I just read those of Chips Channon…and these run parallel in time for the most part, and theirs lives intersect. But Cecil seems a nicer, more real person than Chips did. He is eager for war work…the opposite of Channon who spent the war entertaining mostly…and always humbled by the efforts of others. His tour as a photo journalist for the war office is fascinating and painful to read. It seems almost impossible that the Allies won. I noted that in Chips’ diary as well, but in his case it was because it seemed that every person vital to the war was dining in Belgravia with Chips. How they got on with the war work is baffling…a really good read, written by a man of many real talents, who in every sense of the word, created a spectacular career for himself out of nothing more than a love of beauty and drama at a very young age.

Cecils writings of his time in India and China brought history alive. I stop reading every now and then to google names of WWII personages. A learning experience.

    Very informative.

After reading the first volume I fell in love with Mr. Newton and his friends, life, world. This volume covers WWII. War holds no interest for me, usually. This memoir is different, he talks of the people he meets and spends time with, explains in detail the cities and countries he visits, yes he sees 'war' and describes it, as well as a hospital - here he goes into great detail of worlds, surgeries, etc and if you're squeamish you should skip the chapter. Also there are the stories of the people we've come to know in volume one, how they and their lives have changed, the bombings in England are described as well as the people enduring them. Its the people, humanity all over the globe, described that makes this book one that should be read, especially by people like me who are not interested in reading of politics and war.

A cheap version by Amazon badly printed like a lot of the books I have ordered - when did Amazon start doing this? It should be made clear and I will stop buying books from Amazon
