An ancient gift becomes a mother’s nightmare.
From award-winning, best-selling author Steve Zell, a coming-of-age tale that combines mythology with modern age terror.
Mourning the death of her first child, Brit Helm struggles to create a “normal” life for her youngest, Michael, in a sleepy southern-California beach town. The intrusion of a pretty surfer threatens to shatter Brit’s tenuous control over Michael, and control him she must. Michael isn’t like other boys.

When Michael gets angry his blood runs cold...and terrible things can happen.

A kid who spent many days exploring abandoned hotels and stores in then ghost town, Jerome, Arizona, Steve Zell always loved to tell stories, draw scary pictures, and sing. Later, he became an animator and digital animation tools instructor for the LA area animation and FX studios and, as a singer, became the "Voice of Doom" for Baywatch. Steve was the first interdisciplinary studies graduate from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he studied studio art, vocal production, drama, journalism, and chemistry. He was an early member of the Tucson Invisible Theatre Company, and the cartoonist for The Tombstone Epitaph, a town he later combined with Jerome, Arizona, and with Bodi, California, to create the setting, Pinon Rim, for his first novel, WiZrD. His family's frequent summer trips to his grandmother's home in Del Mar, California in the 60s, provided the setting for Running Cold.

A UA "Wildcat for life" and former desert rat, he now lives with his wife and daughter in the slightly more liquid climate of Portland, Oregon, where he began the partnership between Intel and Dreamworks|SKG, as well as the Intel Audio Alliance whose members included Billy Bob Thornton, Graham Nash, George Massenburg, Michael Boddicker, Nathaniel Kunkel, Allen Sides, Rory Kaplan and other audio pros. He participates in community theater, spends way too much time on the computer - and...is always on the lookout for a cool ghost town...

I have been reading horror for pushing forty years, and I do not remember the last time that I sat up right reading with my eyes wide open. The main character is a young boy that is the strangest child that I have read or seen in a movie since the little girl in the movie Bad Seed. Such a simple story on the surface, a newly single mother trying to make ends meet in a new town. That is where the simpleness ends. Running Cold is honestly like no book that I have ever read. That is saying a lot since I am a librarian. And if you figure out the ending, you are a much smarter person then I am. This one will keep you up reading, and wondering when the next book is coming out.

Started out slow. Very detailed about the different characters. Once you get past about Midway, the book picks up to a Sprint, and hang on, it is about to get interesting. The book left me wanting more, and I look forward where the author will take me next.

Wizrd brought terrific images of the American Southwest, written very much in the style of "old" Stephen King before he started writing the later schlock that no one seems to like.
Zell had me wanting to find Pinion Rim and Cody...just because the book makes it all seem so familiar.

I've just now downloaded Running Cold, and am into the first 30 pages and already intrigued. Once again, Zell strikes very close to home (so far). Can't wait to finish this by tonight!!

Steve has created rich and soulful young characters around a fictional beach community in Southern California in the sixties. There is simultaneously something naive, yet unsettling about a newcomer to the community and his impact on all people around him that moves the story forward. Vivid and human character descriptions compel you to care about the characters and their progression through the engaging narrative. The storyline is unique and gripping - I couldn't put it down....

This story started with one son, Nick, being cruel to his little brother, Michael. It becomes so extreme that Michael explodes like a bottle rocket and changes form, then kills Nick. It seems that the boys' mother has known since birth that there was something strange about Michael. The story becomes more and more confusing. Michael and his mother are killed by a man just released from prison. People go by the house but on one is there, except when Michael's dead mother appears in their old house and warns Sandy, a friend of Michaels. Michael's changed form appears at a talent show and starts attacking and killing people because they made fun of his friend when he sang. Soon, the creatures in Nick's paintings start appearing to Sandy. His dead mother tells Sandy the paintings were made by Michael not Nick. Then she tells Sandy Michael killed his brother but if he'd just start painting again all would be well.
I failed to find any kind of story that made sense in this book. I forced myself to read the entire book trying to find a discernible plot, but failed to find one. Don't waste your time on this book unless you enjoy books that don't make sense.

I distinguish between “authors,” who have a book and “writers,” who have a way with words. Steve Zell qualifies as the latter, meaning he meets a more-demanding standard. Running Cold showcases unique, descriptive phrasing and embellishing imagery. Beware…It’s not for the faint-hearted as sinister forces commandeer young innocents. Get set for a quirky amalgam that proves gripping. I’m already in line for the sequel!

Wow! I just finished reading this book and all I can do is think about the characters, the town, and the events that took place. It is one of those books that you start reading and you just can't put down. I'm totally impressed by the vivid imagery; I'm convinced that I experienced what I read. Thank you Steve Zell for telling your story and for putting out the best book of the year!
