Konrath Dark Thriller Collective - Three Novels (Afraid, Trapped, Endurance) (J.A. Konrath Thriller Collections) Kindle Edition
Three complete horror novels by the master of chills, J.A. Konrath.
A F R A I D
WELCOME TO SAFE HAVEN, POPULATION 907...
Nestled in the woods of Wisconsin, Safe Haven is miles from everything. With one road in and out, this is a town so peaceful it has never needed a full-time police force. Until now...
A helicopter has crashed on the outskirts of town and something terrible has been unleashed. A classified secret weapon programmed to kill anything that stands in its way. Now it's headed for the nearest lights to do what it does best. Isolate. Terrorize. Annihilate.
Soon all phone lines are dead and the road is blocked. Safe Haven’s only chance for survival rests on the shoulders of an aging county sheriff. And as the body count rises, the sheriff realizes something even more terrifying - maybe death hasn't come to his little town by accident...
WELCOME TO SAFE HAVEN, POPULATION 907... 906... 905...
AFRAID by J.A. Konrath
Are you afraid of the dark? You will be.
T R A P P E D
TERRIFIED...
It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal.
Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.
But Martin didn't come back. And neither did Sara when she went in search of him.
Then the laughter stopped.
...TO DEATH
The group soon began to realize that this deserted island wasn't so deserted after all. And perhaps Martin's ridiculous story had more truth to it than anyone thought.
What's the most horrifying thing you can imagine?
This is a hundred times worse...
TRAPPED by J.A. Konrath
It starts where other horror ends
E N D U R A N C E
WELCOME TO THE RUSHMORE INN
The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.
ONCE YOU CHECK IN...
When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her suitcase wasn't where she put it. Then her cell phone was moved. Finally, she heard an odd creaking under the bed. Confusion quickly turned to fear, and fear to hysteria when she discovered the front door was barred and the windows were bricked over. There was no way out.
...YOU'LL BE DYING TO LEAVE
One year later, four new female athletes have become guests of the Inn. Will they escape the horrors within its walls? Or will they join the many others who have died there, in ways too terrible to imagine?

From the Inside Flap
Q: Did you always want to be a writer?
Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.
Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.
Q: When did you decide to become a writer?
Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.
What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.
Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.
Actually, I just watch old Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.
Q: Who do you like to read?
Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.
My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY WIFE
HORTON HATCHES A TERRORIST PLOT
ON BEYOND DONKEY PUNCH
MARVIN K MOONEY WILL YOU PLEASE DROP DEAD
THE CAT IN THE HAT GETS NEUTERED
GREEN EGGS AND E COLI
THIDWICK THE BIG HEARTED COKE DEALER
MR. BROWN CAN MOO, AND THEY PUT HIM AWAY
THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET, AND I BLAME CIALIS
BOOMER THE TUMOR
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.
Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?
Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.
Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.
Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.
I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.
Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.
I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.
It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.
When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.
Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?
Joe:This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits. My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.
Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?
Joe: Nope. Not really.

About the author

Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2021Awesome Trilogy!
With this being a triple omnibus of three horrifying novels I am breaking them down book by book with thoughts for each book.
Afraid
The town of Safe Haven is shattered by a helicopter crash that releases special ops soldiers that believe they are on a mission to seek and destroy - the problem is the soldiers will not let anything stand in their way of extracting the information they are looking for.
The citizens of the town realize too late that they are in the sights of these soldiers and they will have to band together to survive or die trying whichever comes first!
Thoughts:
This book just jumped out from under me right away as something happens almost instantly with this story which kept me suspended in terror. I was reading about what the citizens were going through as for the first couple or so chapters I was as much in the dark as the citizen characters on trying to figure out what was stalking them.
I learned quick that the threat was soldiers, but the author keeps the reader hooked until revealing that information, but then I was still in tension and anticipation of what was going to happen next so even revealing that info just heightened my level of intrigue!
The writing style is pristine and smooth which I knew that it was going to be a fun read as I have read this author under his other name for his crime thrillers, though I have read one of his horror novels before which was Haunted House that is really tied in with this set of books, but I didn't know that when I first read the book that there was character tie-ins so will be rereading that book when I finish reading the three books in this omnibus.
Trapped
Martin and Sara Randhurst are guardians of six teens who have had troubled pasts and they decide to take them all camping out to an island that has been known to have an abandoned prison. Martin tells a spooky campfire story to them all one night after they get settled around the campfire about the prison and what happened there.
Then a few of the teens see something in the bushes but they don't think nothing of it till Martin mysteriously falls back into the bushes but doesn't reappear. Sara thinks Martin is just joking around and trying to scare everyone, but when after a half hour or so and Martin still hasn't reappeared then everyone becomes worried.
When Sara decides to go in search of Martin she takes a couple of the teens with her telling the others to stay in camp, but then things take a horrific turn as there is "something" roaming the island jungle and it is not happy that they have all invaded its turf.
Thoughts
This story grabbed me right away as when the character Martin disappears then all hell broke loose with everyone trying to find him and finding something else instead. There is lots of mystery and spookiness within this story along with some blood action as well. This story moves at a fast pace and there are plenty of twists and turns throughout the story which kept my insomnia fueled a few nights.
Endurance
An Iron Woman triathlon has been overbooked at one hotel so the hotel clerk informs the guests that they can book a room at the Rushmore Inn (a bed and breakfast) that is hidden away in the backwoods of West Virginia.
Women have arrived at the Inn but the rooms are creepy in that all the rooms seem to have previous presidents faces on portraits around the room and things just seem to be "off" about the place. There are some creepy and deformed men that are wandering around the inn, but that is not all that is hidden deep away inside this inn as once the women get settled into their rooms they are going to find out that there is more to the Rushmore Inn than they thought and they should have not stayed there!
Thoughts
This was a backwoods hillbilly gore fest that was a slow burn as it took a little time to get to the "nitty gritty" of the story. There is a prologue where something happens but once I became involved in the gist of the main story it took a little bit for things to happen but when it did I had to grab my gore suit as this story turned into a twisted bloody mess!
Total thoughts for the trilogy
This was a great trilogy and I am happy that I finally stepped into all three books as I have owned them for awhile. I have been reading the crime series of this author and really been enjoying them, but hadn't really stepped into his horror books. All three books kept me wrapped up in twisted knots as I wanted to see what was lying in store for me through each book. Giving this whole trilogy five "Gruesome Gore" stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2013Overall, I give the three stories combined 4 stars. My favorite was Trapped. The most creepy was Endurance. Afraid was decent, but it makes sense to put it first in this combo just because it's the weakest of the three.
I'm really getting into Konrath's stories, but unfortunately I still find more than a handful of editing errors (missing words, wrong words, etc.). For that reason alone, I can't give these 5 stars.
He creates really engaging characters who all have interesting back-stories, and he throws interesting twists and turns to combine different plotlines. Also, and this applies especially to Endurance, he finds more and more creative ways of letting characters think they've escaped the horror, only to draw them back in again.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2019All three of these novels are very well written and all are very creepy, almost disturbing. However, if you are looking for a good scary read that is a bit disturbing these may be for you. It is hard to imagine how the idea to write these even come to mind, but even more scary when you realize that things similar to this unfortunately do happen at times in real life.
All of that being said, I did enjoy the books very much. All are well written. Sure there is a white knight or two here or there, but J.A. Konrath certainly paints the pictures so that you can vividly see them in your mind. You will not want to put any of these stories down. You will want to keep reading to see what happens!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2020These books really kept you wanting to continue reading. It was sort of like watching a slow motion car crash. You know it is going to be bad, but you just can't look away. I am not sure how the author could sleep at night while writing these. I am surprised I did while reading them.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025Story is about iron man competition and women chosen to be abducted. Page after page you follow these women. Strong in mind and physicality. I stayed up till 4:45 trying to finish this last book of three.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019I will start out saying that I generally do not read this creepy dark genre so I wasn't sure I would like it... I was very surprised by how much I liked all three of these books... I first read Afraid and had previously downloaded it and I was blown away.... It was dark, creepy, deep, scary and very disturbing and I liked it very much... I searched and found this collection next and wasn't disappointed with it either... This author knows how to spin a tale and keep you in suspense.... These stories remind me of early Koontz or Stephen King and I am definitely a fan now... I will be reading more from Konrath in the future and look forward to it in a dark creepy kind of way....
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2020Just a little too gory. The “goriness” overshadowed the plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2013I don't typically choose to read horror novels but after reading a free sample of afraid i was hooked and had to have the whole book. I am so glad I did because I discovered a wonderful new author. I found all three of these books to be excellent reads. They were worth every penny. I don't see how anyone could say that these novels didn't grab and hold their attention from the first page. However, I do feel I was misled into thinking this was a trilogy. The stories are in no way related to each other. But all of them were some of the best I've read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
Picked this up for 99c. Wow what a bargain. If you haven't read Kilborn/Konrath this is an excellent place to start. Strong stomach s only though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror At Its Very Best
This trilogy from Jack Kilborn is one of the very best I've read. Ever since I've read the first novel Afraid, I've been hooked at this author and couldn't put any of his books down. All three are extremely good and I couldn't pick one novel that stood out from the rest. The feeling of dread, suspense, horror and utter terror gripped me in every page and I was thrown into the story along with the characters. As I was reading these stories, the world around me dissolved and it was just me and the book. I got goosebumps, my palms got sweaty and the hair at the back of my neck stood up. To me, that's what perfect horror is. To involve the reader wholeheartedly that everything else doesn't matter anymore.
Kilborn's books are not only gory, bloody and brutal but also brilliantly written. The character development is great and he is able to make the reader care about the main characters. He also developed the villians well that readers could not help but hate and loathe them. I've enjoyed every single page and I would re-read these books again and again. Highly recommended for all horror fans out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought this to study his writing style - and it's cracking!
As the title says, I bought into this purely from a 'how a bestselling Kindle author goes about writing fiction" angle, and I have to say a) I'm really glad I did and b) They are actually cracking reads! Proust it isn't, but it's pageturning stuff that makes me smile at the end of each chapter to see a master of fiction at work. If you want to write good fiction, buy this set.
If you want a great commute read, or a holiday book or even a curl up on the couch with the lights low book (on second thoughts, not that one - they're too scarey), you won't go far wrong with this.
I never thought I'd enjoy formulaic horror science fiction, but I have to admit, I really like Konraths work - and this from a guy who threw Lee Childs 61 Hours at the wall after 17 pages.
Well worth buying.
I hope this helped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Great story and characters. The editing was very distracting. Tons of spelling and grammar errors but still a good horror
