*** THIS VERSION HAS COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS INSIDE ***Adventures In Happiness is a true story of travel, change, and adventure. It is based on what happened when John, a thirty-seven-year-old corporate worker, quit his twenty-one-year career, and took a massive step into the unknown. It covers the highs, the lows, and everything in-between as he drove a campervan through Europe and Morocco, backpacked across South Africa, rode a motorbike around Sri Lanka, kitesurfed a lot, and settled for a while in the city of Cape Town. But it's not just a story of travel. It's also an inspirational story of making changes, following dreams, and lessons learnt. They say happiness is a journey. Well they're not kidding, and this is his so far.

Hi, I’m John.

I'm a writer, an engineer, and a coach from the UK.

3 years ago I left behind a 21 year career to give myself chance to experience life in a different way! I’m a passionate kitesurfer, I love travel, adventures, and being outdoors. I also enjoy sharing out what I’ve learnt from my own changes.

I began to write soon after leaving work. I had started to travel, and found it a great way to capture and share back my adventures and changes. Fast forward to now, I've just published what I titled 'Adventures In Happiness - a true story of travel, change, and adventure.'

Feedback has been good, and I am happy to have captured my story, and been able to share out what it was like, and what I learnt. Go check it out - you may be inspired yourself!

As to what is next. We will just have to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple (in the best possible way), Unnerving, Calming & Inspiring.

I wanted to sink further in to my seat when John talks about picking up random locals on the side of the road in Morocco. I related to his description of days filled with doubt, uncertainty & sketchy moods. I was transported to the familiar surroundings of Cape Town as well as the unfamiliar beaches of Sri Lanka. A real story.
John captures both his transient & temporary experiences when change is afoot, whether this be fleeting interactions with strangers or shifts in perspective that stick with him.
John tells a story. Full stop. There's no "how to" or top tips behind his story telling, which is refreshing. I read this during a time of change for me & it was liberating to read someone else's journey without the expectation that I need to adhere to a certain way of instigating my own growth. Whether you are thinking or doing small or big changes, it's worth a read for sure!

A superb read that clips along at a pace. Written in a conversational tone, it feels like you're sitting next to John just having a chat. Not only does he sweep you along on the adventure but also shows moments of true reflection, evaluation of life and what really can happen when you follow your dreams and open your heart. Inspirational, honest and funny at times. Looking forward to John's second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One man's epic journey from the corporate world to freedom
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2021
The author takes you on an inspiring journey from giving up the 9-5, to taking off in his camper van and exploring the world in pursuit of adventure and happiness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about all the kitesurfing, exciting experiences and escapades along the way, and felt so immersed in the story it was almost like being in the passenger seat! (you'll have to read to find out what happens to the unwanted acquaintance in the passenger seat!!)
What I really found the most valuable though was the author's personal reflections on what he learned throughout his journey, and how he overcame his doubts and fears about giving up what had been a prosperous career, to find greater fulfilment and happiness through travel, adventure and perhaps sharing those experiences to inspire and motivate others to consider a life outside the norm.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspirational life experiences from a campervan
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2023
I’ve just bought a campervan and had this book on my list to read for a while, so the timing felt right. This is a non sugar coated diary of what campervan life is like, but it’s also more. It helps give some meaning to’Why travel’. This isn’t a tips and tricks book about van life but a general guide to how to find yourself and your dreams. Great read John, and keep living the dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you think about your life!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2018
From small city Derby to the big outside world, this book makes you think about what else is out there beyond the office. It is worth a read for anyone contemplating time away from their career to explore other cultures and to contemplate their own lives and futures. It brings out the importance of friends and the ability to live simply in a complex world. Whilst it might not fully provide the secret to happiness, it definitely makes you think and I suspect that there are plenty of people who feel the same way as the author at one point another in their career. My own insight into the secret to happiness - friends and family, a purpose (work or otherwise), exploring the world and its many cultures and giving lots back to society and if you combine the whole lot together even better!
