_____________________________
Praise for the trilogy:
"Final book in The Neon Sands Trilogy, Flames of Apathy makes for a satisfying conclusion. The scale introduced in book two of the series, Plains of Ion, is built upon to create an engaging denouement where the rich cast of characters inhabit a world of deliciously stylish sci-fi."
"This is science fiction that pays due attention to mood and contrasting atmosphere."
"Evocative of the noirish and epic loveliness of the dreamscape quality of the best of science fiction on celluloid, the narrative also incorporates a multi-layered dimension with nods to the cold brutalism and relentless action also associated with the heights of the genre."
"A great yarn, interestingly telling a story of mankind's future so bleak at the beginning and end with possibly no hope for a better tomorrow. BUT, then again maybe there is."

About the author

My stories percolate in the shadow of the Malvern Hills in Central England; just a few long strides from a glorious view, though one not so grand or as high as the sand mountain, no doubt. Rain dapples this quaint English town (of course it does) but on clear days you can see for miles as the land ebbs and flows, green and pale fields sliced apart by hedgerow and road. The occasional farmhouse unchanged for decades. Perhaps a boxy Grand Design or two.
This is nothing like Neon, and neither is the town plagued by an overzealous hierarchy. (At least to my knowledge, though fools and kings are so often interchangeable.) So Neon is my escape; while I dream of places like Tokyo and Google the dunes of the Sahara, hoping one day to visit. Who lives here? And what do they do? Why do they do it? These questions I try to answer, pointing the character towards a goal and letting them make their own decisions on the way. I’m often surprised by the result – I hope you are too.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019AJS. has penned a novella which sets up the Neon Trilogy. Numerous problems have occurred and the remaining military personnel are attempting to save as many remaining Earthlings as possible. The sun has turned from yellow to nearly red. Everyone not protected is instantly burned to a crisp unless they can beat the rays to the dome complexes. The end is near. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2021Neon Zero: The Neon Series Prequel (Neon #0.5), my third read from author Adam J. Smith. December seemed to be my month for new authors and January looks to continue the trend. I prefer mystery and thrillers yet this didn't disappoint. I was gifted a free copy back in May of 2020 and lost track of it until I was given an Audible copy of Plains of Ion: A Dystopian Trilogy: The Neon Sands Trilogy, Book Two, and I'm voluntarily reviewing it because every good books need reviews. I look forward to more from this author and in this series, Up next is Flames of Apathy: The Neon Sands Trilogy, Book 3, (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2019A story that barely comes together until well past the middle, interspersed with one that never does, and misuses every homonym possible
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2020Two interwoven stories of survival on a hostile planet that Earth colonized after terraforming. Not only must they battle the effects of solar flares bent on destroying their world but the treacherous actions of an elitist group. A real page turner. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2019On a terraformed world colonized by humans from Earth, the domed cities and towns face imminent destruction from raging solar flares. Lance Corporal Edmonds races to evacuate smaller communities and winds up trapped in the city of Neon where he discovers the thriving metropolis has a shockingly dark underbelly. Outside the safety of Arcadia's dome, fifteen-year-old Jax hurries to his hidden refuge to save something special he's created before the solar waves hit.
Neon Zero is a well-told tale of betrayal, loss, and a the unethical choices of a small group of elitists. The novella, a prequel to the Neon Sands trilogy, unravels at a brisk pace and sets the stage for the series, giving the reader an intriguing glimpse into the grim secrets of Neon.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020I am really enjoying this scifi/dystopian series. I read the first trilogy before this prequel. It was great getting some background into the world wide disaster that came before.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021Like his other er, book, it is written in italics. It is so hard to go through with the typos, the spelling errors and the lack of knowledge in how to set up a dialogue. Ugh. It's like having a root canal. Or sitting through parliament listening to germy corbin. It would serve mr. smithy well if he'd put out the money and buy a book on punctuation and one on how to write a fiction novel.
Things that would help would be something called "proof reading." This book and I use the term loosely, makes me dizzy from the swamp it is of trying to string two sentences together and never quite succeeding. Even at zero dollars it's over priced. It is so laughable how juvenile this guy is in writing and actually thinking he can write.
This would be good for a writing class to dissect, much like the proverbial frog in a biology class, on how NOT TO WRITE. It is really, really that bad. I'm not sure what mr. smith does other than lay around on public assistance and steal ideas. Even his stolen ideas can't be done right. Does he know the difference between there, they're and their? Or does his cellphone writing program not have any grammar or spelling assistance. It does read like it was written on a cellphone which explains a lot. A lot. Mr. smithy, clean up your work, get some hair plugs and try getting a job like working on a garbage truck. If you do, I'm sure you'll be seeing lots of your work on the way to the dump.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2020Really good book to read. Haven't read any of the neon series and I was pretty impressed with this one. You definitely don't have to write a 900 page Clancy style book to write a good one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two perspectives, two stories, one world
This read made my morning commute to work a lot more exciting. I enjoyed learning about a new world from the perspective of two very different people. I particularly liked how the story was broken up, it stayed fresh and each story line was just as gripping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evocative introduction
A prequel novelette introduction to the Neon universe. I’ve read the first trilogy of the Neon series, so am familiar with the world, and this relatively short precursor is a welcome additional extra, offering a further level of depth. Set before the events of Neon Sands, Neon Zero explores in greater detail the calamity that befell Earth previous to the timeline covered in the other books. The planet faces a bombardment of solar flares, increasing in ferocity. These are vividly and terrifyingly depicted. The narrative switches focus between a selection of characters struggling to comprehend and react to an increasingly desperate situation. At regular points diary entries are interspersed with the direct narrative, giving a pleasing variation in tone.
The length of the novelette is kept brief, and this story really is to be regarded as an addition for those already invested in the world, or those who plan on using it as a springboard to the Neon novels proper. As a standalone, it’s a curio, but for those seeking to add further layers of understanding to the Neon series it’s very satisfyingly done.
Not essential, but worth investing time in as an expansion to the series. For its short length it manages to include well rounded characters and a couple of visceral and memorable set pieces. A rewarding glimpse into the origins of the story, with an evocative portentous atmosphere.
