Plains of Ion: A Dystopian Trilogy: The Neon Sands Trilogy (Book Two) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

The sun-scorched tundra shimmers, and blood drips between the cracks.

Life on the plains is tough, dangerous, and just plain boring. Elissa dreams of breaking the monotony and winning the Liberty Trials; a hoverbike race around the perimeter of the plains with entry to Neon City at stake. Her town sits in the shadow of the enormous blister of Neon’s dome, within reach and yet forbidden. If she could only win… everything would change.

If only the stranger hadn’t appeared. If only she could get Quintessa, one of the three Queens, off her back. If only the murderous Rohen could get exactly what he deserved. So many questions. So many variants. When had life stopped being so boring?

A sci-fi dystopian adventure in an inhospitable landscape, Plains of Ion is the second book in an epic series that will explore Man’s technological and innate potential, and the search for hope when all looks bleak.

Praise for the Neon series:

“Neon Sands is sci-fi with conviction, and that conviction displays most evidently in setting. A world built of glorious and alienating sands, both a marvel and irritant. Chocka with filmic interludes, glowing horizons, red dusty skies. This novel quietly won me over.”

“It has great tension and some wonderful world building details which hook you in to the claustrophobic existence of the characters.”

“The tension really is well maintained throughout and the sense of mystery, high-stakes and justified paranoia that the characters experience is excellently portrayed.”

My stories percolate in the shadow of the Malvern Hills in Central England; just a few long strides from a glorious view, though one not so grand or as high as the sand mountain, no doubt. Rain dapples this quaint English town (of course it does) but on clear days you can see for miles as the land ebbs and flows, green and pale fields sliced apart by hedgerow and road. The occasional farmhouse unchanged for decades. Perhaps a boxy Grand Design or two.

This is nothing like Neon, and neither is the town plagued by an overzealous hierarchy. (At least to my knowledge, though fools and kings are so often interchangeable.) So Neon is my escape; while I dream of places like Tokyo and Google the dunes of the Sahara, hoping one day to visit. Who lives here? And what do they do? Why do they do it? These questions I try to answer, pointing the character towards a goal and letting them make their own decisions on the way. I’m often surprised by the result – I hope you are too.

This second chapter in Calix's journey brings him to an astonishing and bizarre town in the arid plains beyond the sands, a world he never knew existed. Looming on the horizon is the sparkling, forbidden dome of Neon City.

The action and storytelling of Plains of Ion are just as interesting as the first book of the series. The story opens with the Liberty Trials, a hoverbike race out in the plains that grants the winner entrance to Neon City. The race introduces some of the characters, their backgrounds, hopes, and mindsets. Elissa, one of the competitors, rescues Calix off the mountain at the edge of the plain and he is taken to the palace of one of the town's three matriarchs to recover.

As Calix struggles to stay afloat in the baffling town of immortal rulers, true-born descendants, clones, and dark secrets, he finds the way to Neon City barred and despairs of ever finding Annora. Through tenacity and new alliances, he learns to adapt and makes plans to break through the barriers into the bowels of Neon.

Plains of Ion is the second instalment in the planned Neon Sands trilogy. Whereas the introductory novel was sparse and unveiled its characters against the open desert plains, Plains of Ion ventures into new territories. It begins with a breakneck race, a speed injected narrative designed to reveal some intriguing character dynamics and hyped up landscapes. The descriptions here are pacy and evocative, hulking metal bikes warring against each other and the unforgiving sands.

The number of characters and their individual arcs takes an effort to get to grips with and I felt in some parts, especially the middle section, this aspect could’ve been streamlined into a leaner narrative. The world itself is an extremely attractive one to me, from the views of the endless plains themselves, to the matriarchal community the characters must make their way through. The stakes are high, whether it be with the hardcore win or lose of the Liberty Trials, or the challenges of surviving hostile and stifling streets.

Plains of Ion continues the trilogy well, creating a compelling propulsion, with threads initiating and sustaining a building tension, and a climax that I found surprisingly entertaining and effective. Again, it is the setting which dominates, although character is developed in greater depth in contrast to the first book of the trilogy also. It is a world that is exciting to be transported to, familiar to connoisseurs of classic science fiction whilst simultaneously given a fresh and individual spin. The writing is crisp and efficient, giving the book an energetic flow. Certainly enough to invite curiosity for the next book in the series.

Plains of Ion: A Dystopian Trilogy The Neon Sands Trilogy, Book Two, my second read from author J.D. Allen. December seemed to be my month for new authors and January looks to continue the trend. I was given an Audible copy and I'm voluntarily reviewing it because every good books need reviews. 6-hours 11-minutes/288-pages, a bit more graphically adult in content. Steven Miller's narration adds to a good book's excellence. I look forward to more from this author and in this series, Up next is Neon Zero: A Dystopian Sci-fi: The Neon Series Prequel that I discovered I got back in May. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This was a well written story, but I felt like it was all over the place. I am sure it is because I started with the second book in the series. I am going to read the first one and see if it makes more sense.

The story revolves around a group of clones called the “brothers” who have their blood used for experiments. The town is comprised of people living in shacks in the desert trying to earn passage to a domed city. They race hover bikes to determine the winner.

Their world is violent and bloody and the one of the brothers is a killer. Will he be brought to justice or will he get away with the murders he has committed?

This second book expands into a new area of the world with a whole cast of new characters. Great follow up to the first book, Neon Sands!

This 2nd book starts with a LitRPG-style race which is long and seems unrelated until several of its characters come into play with Cal, the Book 1 protagonist. It is also much more politically themed with less action overall. Still, it is compelling with excellent character development. And, like Book 1, it ends in a cliffhanger...
