Purge of Deceit: The Neon City Trilogy #3 Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 21 ratings

Even the rain cannot extinguish all the fires now burning throughout Neon.

With Deke Allinson on their tail, and Annora more exposed then she has ever been, can Elissa hold it together long enough to reach safety? Or is the fire burning all around her a reflection of her own desire for revenge?

There's talk on the street too; the authority have rounded up the remaining protesters and mean to make an example out of them. However things end, one thing is for sure - it will never be the same again.

A dystopian cyberpunk adventure inside a vast city dome, Purge of Deceit is the closing book in the Neon City trilogy. What cost is freedom?

Praise for the Neon series:

“Neon Sands is sci-fi with conviction, and that conviction displays most evidently in setting. A world built of glorious and alienating sands, both a marvel and irritant. Chocka with filmic interludes, glowing horizons, red dusty skies. This novel quietly won me over.”

“It has great tension and some wonderful world building details which hook you in to the claustrophobic existence of the characters.”

“The tension really is well maintained throughout and the sense of mystery, high-stakes and justified paranoia that the characters experience is excellently portrayed.”

My stories percolate in the shadow of the Malvern Hills in Central England; just a few long strides from a glorious view, though one not so grand or as high as the sand mountain, no doubt. Rain dapples this quaint English town (of course it does) but on clear days you can see for miles as the land ebbs and flows, green and pale fields sliced apart by hedgerow and road. The occasional farmhouse unchanged for decades. Perhaps a boxy Grand Design or two.

This is nothing like Neon, and neither is the town plagued by an overzealous hierarchy. (At least to my knowledge, though fools and kings are so often interchangeable.) So Neon is my escape; while I dream of places like Tokyo and Google the dunes of the Sahara, hoping one day to visit. Who lives here? And what do they do? Why do they do it? These questions I try to answer, pointing the character towards a goal and letting them make their own decisions on the way. I’m often surprised by the result – I hope you are too.

Lowtown has burned killing nearly all of the residents. The Authority think they have won, broken the terrorist network. Did Calix and Annora really take into account all the death of innocents when they first enacted their plan?

Annora has risked everything, claiming the body of Jocelyn, and leaving Calix and the security of the link to further free humanity. With some of their key group dead, others under arrest will their daring plan prevail?

I came back to this series after quite a while away from it. This moved the story forward but the author is in need of a good proofreader; the misspelled words & poor grammar were at times distracting. I had to mentally sub the correct word for the narrative tp make sense. And the plot has become more grim as the body count rises.

It's Calix, Annora and comrades vs. Deke and The Authority. After Calix burns down Lowtown with a grave loss of innocent life, who is really in the right? Still this is a fight for Freedom and it won't be easily won. I found this final book in the series harder to follow and a bit discordant, but it is another blockbuster for Smith.

Purge of Deceit: The Neon City Trilogy (Neon #6), my seventh read from author Adam J. Smith in the last six weeks, I’m hooked on this ongoing storyline. 6-hours 3-minutes/275-pages, somewhat longer than the earlier books which is good when reading a good story.. Steven Miller's narration adds to a very good book's excellence. I look forward to more from this author and in this series. 5.0 out of 5 stars Spannender Abschluss für die Triologie und eine Empfehlung für Cyberpunk-Fans!
Reviewed in Germany on September 7, 2023
