Q & A with Joe Konrath

Q: Did you always want to be a writer?

Joe: No. I wanted to be a model for husky pants. But then, when I was barely a teen, they stopped making husky sizes.

Damn those clothing designers for shattering my dreams.

Q: When did you decide to become a writer?

Joe: I mean, I'm not offended by the term "husky." Now they're called "relaxed fit" jeans. It's the same thing, but there's nothing sexy about being a "relaxed fit jeans" model. Husky sounds like you're owning those extra pounds, making them work for you. Relaxed fit sounds like you eat too much and are just plain lazy.

What was your question again? Ideas? I hunt through James Patterson's garbage, and steal what he tossed. When Patterson throws out ten pages, that's like fifty chapters.

Ha ha ha! Get it? Because his chapters are so short! I swear, the last Patterson book I read had more chapters than page numbers.

Actually, I just watch old
Outer Limits episodes and appropriate the plots, like Alan Moore did with Watchmen.

Q: Who do you like to read?

Blake Crouch, Ann Voss Peterson, Jeff Strand, Henry Perez, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Schreck. Pretty much anyone I collaborate with. Because here's a dirty little secret: when you co-write a book with someone, you kind of have to read the stuff they wrote.

My absolute favorite author is Dr. Seuss. In fact, I tried my hand at writing a few Dr. Seuss-style children's books. Here are the titles:

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE MY WIFE

HORTON HATCHES A TERRORIST PLOT

ON BEYOND DONKEY PUNCH

MARVIN K MOONEY WILL YOU PLEASE DROP DEAD

THE CAT IN THE HAT GETS NEUTERED

GREEN EGGS AND E COLI

THIDWICK THE BIG HEARTED COKE DEALER

MR. BROWN CAN MOO, AND THEY PUT HIM AWAY

THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET, AND I BLAME CIALIS

BOOMER THE TUMOR

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sell any of these. I think it may be some sort of rights-issue thing.

Q: What's a work day in the life of Joe Konrath like?

Joe: I wake up early and make some eggs.

Then the smoke alarm goes off, because the eggs are burning because I fell asleep again.

Then I spend ten minutes explaining to the firemen that show up how I'll be more careful next time.

I go back to bed, and the next thing I know, it's around noon. Time for lunch. I want to make an egg sandwich, but I'm out of eggs. And bread. And pretty much everything except some sort of fruit that's been in the refrigerator forever and might be a lime. Or not. It may not even be fruit. So I put it back and think about cooking some pasta but that seems like a lot of work for just lunch, so I go take a nap.

Around three I get up, ready to start my work day, but first I need to eat something. Do pizza places deliver at three? I make a few calls. Nope, no one delivers before five.

I check the fridge. The lime thing is still there, but it looks like it moved from where I saw it last. How odd. Did it move by itself? I'm really hungry, so I decide to give it a try.

It's not a lime, because limes don't have bones.

When I finish eating, I sit down at my computer and write my daily quota, thirty pages.

Q: What's next for Joe Konrath?

Joe:This Spring, Carson's will be releasing my signature scent, called Nocturnal Emission. Available in parfum, eau du toilet, cologne, and roll on. I like the roll on. It tickles my armpits. My goal is to make enough money to buy Nebraska. Then I'll rename it Joebraska, and invite all of my friends to visit. We're going to have a big party in the state capital, Joemaha. You can come, if you want.

Q: Do you want to talk at all about your books?

Joe: Nope. Not really.

Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.

If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.

Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.

He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.

With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.

And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.

Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

The Newbie's Guide To Publishing is ideal for any new or recently published author trying to get material into print by publishers, agents and online. Joe, J.A., Konrath is a writer with over 500 rejections to his name, who wrote over a million words, before he finally got published (No secrets here--he tells his readers all about it).

And published he did, with a popular crime thriller series featuring a divorced Detective Jaqueline Daniels, and his horror thriller books penned under Jack Kilborn. Joe Konrath from suburban Chicago began a publishing run that continues to swell in readers and books sold even today. He's published traditional hardcover and softcover (see the shelves at Barnes&Noble, Borders, etc.) and recently has published e-books to a burgeoning audience, with sales placing him routinely in the top Amazon e-sellers list. J.A. Konrath has now compiled years of his blog into this 1200 page tome about the publishing process. It is imperative reading for anyone wishing to become a profitable and successful author in the age of print and electronic media. Not only does Joe Konrath explain what makes a book sell, but he goes in depth with the "brass tacks" of the publishing industry, and teaches you how to manage your own writing career. This book has more "pearls" than a Mikimoto necklace.

The topics range from how to set up a manuscript, fonts and styles, what paper to use, how to best enter contests, how to publish online, story length, selling short stories--the real "nuts and bolts" of writing that I literally could not find in any book. Joe goes on to discuss not only how to get an agent, but how your relationship should be with your publisher, agent, editor; what they expect of you, and what you should expect of them. How to promote your book, how to negotiate an advance, how to set up a book tour, what to expect from a book tour, giveaways from authors, how to deal with fans, etc... I have not ever read a book for authors that had the detail that is included in this very inexpensive e-book. And here's a nifty bonus--the e-book contains clickable links to online reader comments and online material (e.g. Joe Konrath's online marketing bio, as an example) for every chapter in this book. I can say, with honesty, that this is the best few dollars I have ever spent on a book for writers.

The most brilliant part of this ebook is the candor with which Joe explains his struggles as a new writer, how he broke into the trade, and how he has grown his name brand to fulfill his life dream, now as a full-time writer. He tells precisely how the royalties for a book add up, how much is paid, how much a writer can make on ebook sales versus paperback and hardcover. He gives examples of writer's contracts and pitfalls of contracting, royalties, publishing rights, etc. He's a real "elbows on the table" guy that spits it all out for us all to digest and learn from his mistakes and triumphs.

I have not had the pleasure of meeting JA Konrath, but someday I would love to pick his brain over a pint of ale, and explore all the knowledge he's garnered about publishing and being a successful writer. For now, this wonderful canon on writing and publishing will do. To say that it's comprehensive is an understatement.

5 of 5 star rating for A Newbie's Guide to Publishing and J.A. Konrath.

    the bad:
-i realize this book was only 2.99, a terrific value, but i wish he had updated the links. almost all the links in this book no longer work.
-sorely needs an editor. lots of repeated articles, repeated points - the book goes on forever.

    the good:
-i haven't seen any other author really give a peek-behind-the-curtain like this author does. he gives lots of hard numbers and details how things really work....but then again, i wonder how outdated this info is - so much has changed since he wrote (he keeps touting myspace! and this was written before the kindle era, i think - i'm about halfway through the book now, perhaps things will change) that i imagine the hard #s must have changed a lot by now. at the point i'm at in the book now, he disprages advertising - but for years now, there has been facebook targeted advertising - i remember reading about a woman who went the self publishing on kindle route and made a ton of money, bc she spent a ton on FB advetising. and THAT was more than 5 years ago, i don't know what the landscape is like now.

still, he gives some great insights and does well to tamper your expectations without being depressing. he is big into self promotion, and i believe he is right on the money. if youve written a great book, but no one knows about it, then you're doing yourself a great disservice.

i am grateful to him for being so transparent -- for me it was fascinating to hear real #s from the industry.

i would still buy this. i have been reading for hours and am only halfway through. and i'm not a slow reader. really wish he had had an editor but anyway, it's worth a read and i'm grateful to him for sharing his experience. he could've decided to keep a mystique but he did not, he shared. really cool.

You might be wondering if all these five star reviews were written by friends of J.A. Konrath. I don't know, but it wouldn't matter even if they were, because this really is a priceless collection of advice for anyone who wants to have a successful career as a writer. I attended a writing seminar earlier this year for around $600 (not including travel, hotel, etc.), and without exaggeration, the information in this $3 ebook is worth at least as much as what I got out of that wonderful, and extremely helpful, three-day event.

Like many, I found J.A. through his incredible blog. Since then, my sincere respect for him has grown steadily into the stratosphere. Not only is he very generous with what he shares, not only does he work as hard as anyone in publishing, not only is he smart as hell, and not only is he flat-out hilarious, but as I've also come to find after reading this very work, he has more than a little invaluable wisdom to offer, as well. He is a remarkable individual, and being able to download his collected experience as a writer for such a cheap price is just amazing.

There are a few downsides to this work, and they're very insignificant on the whole. One, this ebook is a collection of his blog posts, so you can get this information for free on his blog. However, you would be *insane* to spend the time it would take to go back over the 370,000 words he's written on his enormous blog since 2005. This ebook has a table of contents that allows you to find what you want, click on it, and go right there (blogs are much harder to navigate). For $2.99, it's a steal to have all of this information so well formatted and collected. The other downside IMO is that occasionally (though not very often) you'll find some older material that J.A. has since changed his mind about. For example, he's now a big proponent of independent ebook publishing as a viable route (because the publishing landscape has changed). So my suggestion would be to keep up with his blog just a bit, so that you can see his most current takes on publishing. The last issue might be that this is a HUGE work, but then that's really a benefit, isn't it?

Obviously, people relatively new to publishing can benefit from this work. But there's enough real wisdom here that I think a midlist writer would also get far more than his or her money's worth from it. In particular, J.A. has great information/inspiration about promoting oneself as a writer in a variety of ways, both online and off, areas where he more than walks his talk. He covers an impressively wide array of topics, though, so it's certainly not all about promotion. But some of the most valuable material involves how to succeed in today's marketplace, and he is certainly a leader and pioneer when it comes to things like ebooks and blogging.

Last comment. I've benefited from reading dozens and dozens of good books on writing and publishing. One thing that makes J.A. special is that after reading his articles, I feel truly inspired by his soulfulness as an individual. There's something else behind his words which shows that despite his tireless, gritty efforts to make a living as a writer, the man is all heart. Thanks for your work, Joe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bueno, pero hay que separar al grano de la paja
Reviewed in Spain on February 14, 2015
