Babe on Board - A Harry McGlade/Jack Daniels Mystery Kindle Edition
Private detective Harry McGlade is on the prowl, looking for a one-night stand. Or, in McGlade's case, a five-minute stand.
When he finds a sexy lady at his local bar, he thinks he has a chance with her.
But she isn't alone. There's a guy with her. A guy with a gun whom she's desperately trying to get away from.
When the local mafia becomes involved with McGlade's tryst, things start going bad.
Then they go really bad when a baby comes into the picture. And the only one McGlade can turn to for help is his old partner, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels.
Babe on Board is an 11,000 word novella (about 50 pages long), written by bestselling Kindle authors J.A. Konrath, and Ann Voss Peterson (FLEE, SPREE, THREE, HIT, EXPOSED, NAUGHTY, and RESCUE).
It's a hysterically funny, and sometimes poignant, look at sex, relationships, pregnancy, and fatherhood. It also has guns and violence and criminals and double-crosses and twists and endless jokes. Ann and J.A. are confident that it will appeal to fans of mysteries, thrillers, and even romance (as long as the reader keeps tongue firmly in cheek).
If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.

From the Inside Flap
Joe: Flee was an average length book. Spree and Three are epics. But the only way to shorten them would be to cut action, and I love the action. I think the Chandler series is loads of fun because it is so over-the-top. We wanted to do a contemporary female James Bond, and that meant sex, gadgets, and above all, big action scenes. But the books just kept going and going. Did we plan on Spree being over 100,000 words?
Ann: I think we originally planned it to be about 60,000, although once we got writing, I knew it would be 80,000. Wrong on both counts. It went to 110,000. And Three went to 150,000.
Joe: Hopefully they all still qualify as quick reads. And seamless ones. We both worked hard to make sure the writing was consistent, so readers couldn't tell which scenes you wrote and which scenes I wrote. What was your favorite scene to write?
Ann: Tequila riding the horse. It was fun to take a guy who is so athletic and throw him into a situation where he's over his head, at least at first.
Joe: I know you read my novel Shot of Tequila, which introduced him, but was it weird to write for a character you didn't create? I did a Lund section or two (one of your heroes from the Val Ryker series), but not to the degree you did Tequila. And you did a perfect job with him. One I never could have done, because I've never been on a horse. But you did all that professional riding...
Ann: I loved Tequila when I read him, but I was a little nervous about writing from his point of view. As it turned out, it was a lot of fun. I started riding when I was eleven years old, showed my own horse, and worked for a quarter horse trainer in my early twenties. I had a lot to learn about men's gymnastics, though. What was your favorite scene to write, Joe?
Joe: The whole idea behind Flee was to have a female operative in way over her head. One of the set pieces I was excited about was blowing her out of the ninety-fifth floor of the Hancock Building in Chicago, and having her cling to the side of the building. In Spree, I wanted to have a big scene like that, which became the hot air balloons and the high-tension wire. In Three, my faves were Niagara Falls, the blimp fight, and Fleming at the warehouse.
Ann: Our settings also gave us a lot of ideas. I loved doing all the Mexican scenes in Three. The bullfighting. The naked gunfight. The walk through the desert.
Joe: All fun scenes. For Spree, we visited the Badger Ammo plant in Baraboo, and a cool guy named Verlyn Mueller gave us a tour. We saw the reservoir Chandler got stuck in (which is filled with a rare species of salamander) and the cannon area and the graveyard. We were so captivated by all of it, half of Spree's action happens at Badger.
Ann: Oh, and the industrial grinder!
Joe: How could we not use that? It's huge and grinds up cement and metal. That was just begging to have characters fight on it.
Ann: A lot of it also takes place in the neighboring Devil's Lake State Park, a place I've visited since I was a kid.
Joe: You're from Wisconsin. I go there every year on vacation, and have been since 1973. It was nice to set a novel there. People don't normally use "Wisconsin" and "thriller" in the same sentence.
Ann: Although you set Afraid in Wisconsin.
Joe: I did. But that was a horror novel. That's one of the reasons I included Santiago as a bad guy in Spree--he's one of the villains in Afraid.
Ann: I set Pushed Too Far there, too. And a lot of my romantic suspense novels take place in Wisconsin.
Joe: So I guess we've overused America's Dairyland. Three, the third book in the series, takes place in Washington DC, Toronto, Mexico City, Chicago, and Milan.
Ann: One of the prequels, Exposed, takes place in NYC.
Joe: It was fun using characters from our other books. Onto another topic, you did the sex scenes in Flee and in Spree, and I just added some naughty bits to them. For Three, we each did a sex scene.
Ann: When people try to guess which part you wrote and which I wrote, they're usually wrong.
Joe: Our styles blend pretty well. So, is Three going to be it for the Codename: Chandler series? Or will there be more books with these characters?
Ann: We've written five Codename: Chandler novellas; Exposed, Naughty, Hit, Rescue, and Fix, which all take place before Flee. Then we'll eventually do the fourth novel, Free.
Joe: And that's something everyone wants; a book that's Free...

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2013The story is simple and straight forward. Harry goes to a bar, and sees a beautiful woman, and thinks he has a chance with her. It turns out, she's not alone, and has some unwelcome company. The next thing Harry knows, he's mixed up with the mob, and does things the only way Harry can. That's all I want to say about the plot, anything more would contain spoilers.
This works on so many levels. First, this is funny. I was laughing out loud as I was reading this, and that's very rare for me. I love Harry. Second is the writing style is straight forward, and doesn't get bogged down with a lot of useless information. Third, there's a few plot twists that will keep the reader engaged.
This really is a funny novella. If you know about Harry, then you know what to expect, and won't be let down. I know I wasn't.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2014I love the character of Harry McGlade from the Jack Daniels series of crime thrillers, and ol' Harry doesn't disappoint here as he is his usual 'classy' self. His constant wisecracking and off-color remarks are rapid-fire, and those comments never have any boundaries. Harry meets a woman in a bar, and the next thing you know they're at his place, and the story covers the next nine months or so. With a brief appearance by Lt. Daniels, the story does have some excitement, but my overall feeling when I finished reading was just lukewarm, despite some downright hilarious zingers from the mouth of Harry. I was hoping for more suspense and intrigue, as the plot just didn't have enough steam to carry the entire novella/short story. But, as average as this one is, it won't stop me from reading any other McGlade stories!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2012This was my first introduction to the zany character, Harry McGlade, and his audacious and often inept partners in crime. I must admit I found them charming if not downright appealing in a crazy way. The book is fast-paced, short, and a real page-turner. Now I'm going to read more of the Jack Daniels series.
Kenneth Briden, author of AFTER THE FALL OF THE WALL
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2011Having heard that a novella length McGlade story was in the works (especially since Konrath has said several times that he couldn't see McGlade in anything but short stories), this was a no sample needed purchase for me. I've been a follower of the insensitive cad P.I. who is Harry McGlade since his romantic interlude with a certain dead corpse, bicycle pump and casket that had me cackling with laughter long after the story had concluded.
Having said that, "Babe on Board" (originally titled "Jailbait") while having some of the crass charm of previous McGlade adventures falls considerably short in terms of laughs. There are some witty one-liners, and other trademarks of the McGlade series, but nothing at least for me that made a lasting impression. Additionally, there has been an attempt to "flesh-out" the character of McGlade and introduce an event that has a life changing effect on our blundering hero. While I am all for fleshing out characters, the event for me didn't ring true and I will paraphrase from the product description (as it was written prior to being renamed "Babe on Board") of the novel because this is exactly how I feel, "Depth, emotion and sensitivity have no place in a humorous mystery". Also, be aware that while this is billed in part as a "Jack Daniels Mystery", she has a very tertiary, cameo like role in the story (in my mind more for comic relief than anything else).
In fact, the whole story was a little bit off for me (It was like reading a Lawrence Sanders McNally mystery written by Vincent Lardo...all the normal tropes, characters and settings are present but the essence is missing). I will also say that the story ends very abruptly, leaving me with a "Is that it?" type of feeling.
This story hasn't put me off McGlade, but it definitely is the weak link in the series. If you haven't read any McGlade, I would urge you to read some of his earlier misadventures first before reading "Babe on Board", in particular "The Necro File" for classic McGlade.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2012A Harry McGlade Mystery. Harry gets the ex girlfriend of a mobster pregnant. Written in a much more Firesign Theater/Nick Danger style (less gore, more one-liners) than previous Jack Daniels/Harry McGlade books. This takes the McGlade character outside of the realm of comic relief (and occasional "dumb muscle") for Jack Daniels, and puts Harry front and center in an entertaining way.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2011I had hoped this book would be as good asn his Jack Daniels series, with his same flair of writing, but this wa so different and hard to follow that I don't even know for sure if I even finished it. It asks you to select if you want to continue with this story or go to another section, and it just doesnt flow well at all. It isn't as funny as the Jack Daniels series and not a good read at all. I would not recommend this if you enjoyed the Jack Daniels books. You will be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2013This is the first Harry McGlade I have read & I loved it ! Wish it was a bit longer but was still a good read. I have just started reading books from this author & have not been disappointed yet. If you are looking for a quick read with humor, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Babe on Board
Ja Konrath does it again, this has to be one of my fav stories following Harry mcGlade/Jack Daniels series. Its all about Harry McGlade with a sprinkling of Jack Daniels, but it does not disappoint. Harry McGlade is a side kick to Jack Daniels story lines. He has appeared three times in short stories taking up main roles, but this one just takes the biscuit...I laughed throughout the story, its humerous in the only way Harry can be!
Harry meets girl...Harry saves girl...Girl becomes pregnant....and inbetween that story you find yourself laughing your socks off, or cringing as some of the wise man remarks Harry manages to get away with! Only prob with this book, its tooo darn short!! WOuld recommend reading, even though its short...;) ty
